After burning the candle on both ends together for 3 consecutive years, Smash TV step in the arena to make a statement. Fresh from the barbershop and straight from the beauty salon, the two native Berliners took their drum machines, their classic synths and their guitar out on a strange 6 month date, and present you now all the babies of this steamy liaison under the family name “Noise & Girls”. It’s an album about the duality of life, the (at least) two sides to every story; its about 2 very different characters sharing the love for this musical niche. It’s about trying to keep out of the mental asylum as long as possible, not as easy as it sounds if your job is the best invitation for a long term stay there. Emotion is a key element of the album, with every track conveying a different flavor, like ‘Go feat Yoko Duo’ projecting a sublime warmth, in contrast to the anxious hustle of ‘Gaslamps’. From the opening track ‘Licht’, which takes a slower approach, giving a moment to get in the right mood, Smash TV take us on a ride, always with one foot on the pedal. Relying heavily on soulful grooves and melodic vibes, the album exposes various facets of the duo’s style. From the bass driven thriller ‘The Wake Up’ to the very chilly title track ‘Noise & Girls’, Smash TV blends smooth vocals with even smoother synth lines. We are all very anxious as to what the future holds for Smash TV. If the past is any indicator, we can safely say they wont stop. Imagine an orchestral and oriental Efterklang reworking “Selected Ambient Works” by Aphex Twin – you now have the framework to disseminate “The Gardens Of Bomarzo” by Clorinde. The concept is not a beardy one: statues from the Italian Renaissance garden, various gods and goddess creatures from early mankind become inspiration in a double CD release where “permissible atrophy” – my term for criticism being ideologically permeable of the past – take heed of instrumental manipulations of the present.

The first point to mark any “permissible atrophy” – where sound ingrains itself as useless – from me is the production quality. Seriously, when has music sounded so well rounded, warm and clean? This bodes well for the interpretation of structures that exchange their turf in regards to the instruments used to work on the record. “The Nymph” halfway in to disc II resonates as a sustained exploring of both what has sustenance and what has dissonance with fusion. While “Pegasus”, tune two on disc I, is rollickingly austere, a rousing dragon’s bellow of a bassline with smart apertures in the drums.

“The Tortoise And The Whale” on disc two invites the saxophone and violin to commingle a to-do list, nailed to wall pressure affair in respects of mood and confluence. The effects on “permissible atrophy” turn the listener’s perceptions reverse-ways – to immense appreciation rather than pernickety over-analysis of the weird. All instruments: organ, guitar, saxophone, violin, drums, kalimba, clarinet, glockenspiel, mandolin, accordion, mbira, harmonium, bowed zither, banjo, ukelele – the list is endless – renders the compositions sharply poignant, and all instead of being an extraneous mess. This only adds to the commendability of Clorinde.

Clorinde is the brother duo of Andreas and Simone Salvatici, multi-instrumentalists who are said to “do an extensive use of acoustic instruments taken from Western and non-Western Folk traditions, extrapolated from their original conventional tunings and use and electrified with transducer contact microphones so that they can be processed into electronic devices and amplification”. Importantly with “The Gardens Of Bomarzo”, they have won me over to explore their previous various tunings – both environmental and tonal – and essentially put, “The Gardens Of” is a landmark release in terms of conceptual deification of a place that turns into something sonically extraordinary.

Time for homegrown talent, one of the godfathers of Dutch Techno and a true electronic music pioneer: Maarten van der Vleuten. This trailblazer has appeared on classic labels like R&S, Djax Up Beats and his own Signum Recordings, to name but a few, with his brand of machine music. Returning to Shipwrec, MVDV serves up his own recipe for Electro in the form of the ‘Internaut EP’. The title piece takes the rhythmic mould of the 808 but shifts the floorboards with industrial soundscapes and UK Techno sidesteps framing. A morphing and melting piece of otherworldly Electronics, over ten minutes of shifting synthsizer sands. “Holographic Inserts” lands with terse clips and pulsing basslines before a rumbling analogue chord breaks the surface. Warbling bulwarks of space meet clinical lines in an immense track of expansive proportions. An epic of atmospheric, sinister and sharp sounds; a style pushing the boundaries of Electro.

Mark Van Hoen, who made a string of influential releases as Locust on R&S records in the 1990s, all but retired the alias at the end of that decade. In May 2012, Van Hoen was invited to perform a live set on WFMU radio. In order to make the set more spontaneous and add a further dimension, he asked friend and fellow musician Louis Sherman to collaborate. While improvising new material in Sherman’s Brooklyn rehearsal studio, it swiftly became obvious that the material sounded like Locust. Inspired by joint explorations with found sound sources and ambient textures, and sharing a pan-dimensional immersion in the length and breadth of analog and digital recording, the duo performed a series of tracks live. This material, combined with previously-recorded tape tracks dating back to 2006 form the bulk of the album. The melancholic depths of electronic music explored in those improvisations, expanded further through subsequent sessions at Van Hoen’s Woodstock, NY studio, have resulted in this latest entry in Locust’s impressive discography. The record showcases prime examples of Van Hoen’s compulsively hypnotic beats and abstracted pop vocals — already hallmarks of his collected work since 1993 — manipulating a global variety of samples in Celemony’s Melodyne software to weave a unique sonic tapestry, as inviting as it is intricate. Paired with Sherman’s evocative synth improvisations — an immediately visceral element new to Locust — these collaborators have crafted a shattered landscape that bridges two perspectives of progressive movement in electronic music under a single name. Sherman, an American from Baltimore, comes to the band armed with a vast knowledge of the history of electronic music. This, combined with Londoner Mark Van Hoen’s known musical pedigree, maps the complete topography of a landscape — its shadow and light, depth and height, mesmerizing complexity and ethereal simplicity — with a break-beating heart and alchemical ear.

Mimetic – otherwise known as Jerome Soudan – started his career as a drummer for the band Von Magnet before turning to the world of psychedelic techno and far-out electronic excursions, and this latest LP for Germany’s Hymen Records is a veritable depiction of his broad range of styles and influences. The word is ‘beats’ here, and the opener “Synthetize Me” has one of those drum breaks that grab you by the chin from its first bar, something which can be said about pretty much every track on this fifteen piece leviathan. “So Little Chance” adds in some prophetic vocals to his shuffling drum percolations, whilst “Game In Land 2” feels like AFX gone even more mad on a totally out-of-control drum sequencer, while title track “Where We Will Never Go” sounds like something Kraftwerk would cook up if they’d engaged in Belgian EBM. Other highlights include: “One Of Us”, a totally screwed-up hip-hop-grime-rave number, “Cyanure” which sounds like a mix between Autechre and Drexciya, and also don Mika Vainio’s remix of “WWWNever Go” – an inevitably incredible chunk of drones like only Mr.Vainio can do. Recommended.
