It’s surprising to think that it was back in 2011 that Massimiliano Vianello first emerged on Delsin with his debut EP Too Many Ghosts, but now the Italian producer is finally following up on the promise of that first EP with another selection of psychedelically-tinged house and techno for Meda Fury. It’s pleasing to note that his sound hasn’t been tempered in the passing of time, with a rich tapestry of sounds feeding into his starry-eyed productions from exotic samples to distant synths, loping drum machines to mangled instruments. “Get Mezcla” represents the more direct offering with its sumptuous flute lines and rolling groove but even there you can find your mind wandering into a haze of swirling noise and cooing voices.

Vermont is the coming together of two of dance music’s most respected pioneers; Innervisions’ Marcus Worgull and Danilo Plessow, most famous for his deep house moniker Motor City Drum Ensemble. Having signed to the highly-respected Cologne-based dance label Kompakt, the pair set about working on what has become their forthcoming self-titled album, which mainly foregoes the house and techno of their respective pasts in favour of krautrock-tinged soundscapes. In fact, the album features a handful of krautrock luminaries such as Can’s Jaki Liebezeit and Phantom Band’s Dominik Von Senger, with songs developing out of a series of “loose jam sessions” as if to prove their dedication to the genre. On the first song to emerge from the album, the ambient haze of Majestät – premiered here – the pair utilise the plethora of vintage analogue synthesizers they had at their disposal, with various layers of ever-expanding synths carefully unfurling over distant percussion and a delicate, metronomic beat.

Another strong offering from Exotic Pylon, this time from Ed Gillett, an artist interested in "the creative use of repetition, open collaboration, the enjoyment of mistakes and sub-bass." Rhythmically referencing 2-step and the early 90s breakbeat techno of The Black Dog, and exploring dreamy electronic textures within this framework that look outward into the realms of pure psychedelia. On ‘Concentration’ what sounds like an old El-B/Ghost riddim slugged out and married to the kind of dreamy ambience you’d expect to find on a John Beltran record, while ‘Air White Smoke Signal’ is a terrifically effective meshing of dubbed-out post-punk minimalism and twinkling techno FX, and stand-out offering ‘Mzungu’ sounds like an old Balil or B12 record re-tooled for dubstep-savvy soundboys. In the end though, what makes this album good isn’t the breadth or specificity of the reference points, but the elegance and intelligence with which they’re handled – Gillett balances grit and goo impressively throughout. Fans of R&S, Apollo, 2009/10-era Hotflush and Frijsfo Beats will want to be checking this – a debut of adventurous promise.

Polypsilon, Part 1 is – as the title implies – the first half of two separate 60-minute cassette releases, and the first tape released at RP!

As a Milieu album, Polypsilon is possibly the most “genre music” type thing Milieu has done, filled with all the staples of feel-good braindance as well as my first foray into acid. The recording sessions were impulsive and tangential, and by the end, there was far more material than I was expecting to make, giving way to this two-part release.

It’s probably a spiritual follow-up to Academy Stripes, although it should be noted that Polypsilon was intended to be a sidetrack thing, and not “the next big new Milieu record”, so I guess consider it as a gigantic 2 hour EP.

I can’t really think about how to describe it, so I’ll leave you with the music. There’s lots of 606/707/808 drum machine action, as well as my usual soft spot for a couple breaks and my Korg ER-1, and the synths used include my Roland SH-32, Casio PSS-50 and MT-210, the wonderful Fahtacon softsynth made by my friend Robin and of course the Milieu go-to Lowrey Magic Genie organ, among other things. Everything was meant to be loose, sporadic, playful and tingly on the earlobes, so hopefully that comes through in the final result.

The five tracks of ‘New Brutalism’ are a product of their Northern environment, making pointed reference to the kind of deep-rooted rave heritage documented in Mark Leckey’s ‘Fiorucci Made Me Hardcore’ soundtrack through a prism of angular, vulnerable club music. Conceptually, it adopts a similar perspective on British nightlife to Burial or Lee Gamble, surveying the ‘floor as if during an out-of-body experience or through closed eyes from a corner of the club at 5am. Opening track, ‘UK Will Not Survive’ captures that sensation beautifully with its tape-saturated layers of wistful vocal, woody 2-step, and daubs of Reese bass, whilst ‘Three Day Jag’ isolates that curious blend of hedonism and introspection innate to early UK ‘ardcore, albeit without the narco-sweats. Closing number ‘Run Out’ doffs a cap to grey building sites and strobe-lit clubs alike, channeling diffuse field recordings and half-heard breakbeats with a bleary-eyed, tired, and emotional quality.
