Manuel Tur isn’t just a talented deep house producer. Like many of his Freerange brethren, he gets deep house, intensely and completely. The Spanish-German producer’s tracks, particularly on his third long-player, Es Club, are beautifully distilled paradigms of the genre. He knows all of the modern deep house rules—subtle, linear arrangements, rounded sound design, spare use of vocals and all the rest—and follows them thoughtfully and precisely. But Tur’s music is no by-the-numbers version of the style. Instead, it serves as a reminder of how emotive and beautiful deep house can be.

Es Cub was recorded in a small studio that Tur set up in Ibiza—a peaceful part of the island, dense with trees and far from the megaclubs—and it shows: the feel of the album is lush and sensuous. At the same time, it’s slightly more stripped down than much of his previous work. With a few exceptions, like the sweetly buoyant “MKS-70,” Tur’s rich melodies are pared back, and most cuts rely on only a few elements to work their magic. Es Cub is brimming with subtle momentum and blissful sounds, with only the occasional bit of synth squelch or eccentric syncopation distracting from the LP’s luscious feel. A gently throbbing bass and quietly insistent four-note keyboard pattern propel “Flux,” while a gently building string wash adds drama to the song. The melancholic “About To Fall,” with its synapse-teasing rhythmic interplay and melancholy ambience, could almost pass for a lost Charles Webster track. “Werk” drifts in a sea of swirling and shimmering synths. The best of all might be the title track, as the tune’s understated Latin rhythms and soaring keys attain something close to dance floor perfection.

Much of the album comes off as modern take on mid-’00s Âme or, perhaps, a slinky and subdued interpretation of Objektivity’s catalog of propulsive rhythms. Some might feel that its overriding dreamy aura makes Es Cub a bit too tranquil; admittedly, there are very few sharp edges on the album, and as with a dream, the particulars tend to become a bit fuzzy after the fact. But that’s probably OK with Tur, a producer with an obvious passion for deep beats. This is among the most seductive collection of house tracks so far this year.

“When I first began this project twenty eight months ago, I had no idea the end result would look the way it does today. I had obviously a goal in mind, goal which, I am proud to say, I have completely forgotten as the enterprise gained in importance. My gut was pushing me to spit out this… this…tape. Hence the name. Most of the time, I didn’t even know what was going on. The tape is a really nice tape to listen to while you’re, say, running in the park. Just put it in your cassette player and go run outside. You can run in your apartment too if it is big enough but you might as well go outside, if it’s nice enough. You can also listen to it when you are cooking or washing the dishes. Don’t play it, like, if you are a spa owner. That is bad publicity and I can sue for that. I will be very serious with that, don’t play it at your local spa please. Thank you.”

With ‘My Love Is A Bulldozer’, Venetian Snares first new album since 2010’s ‘My So-Called Life’, Aaron Funk surprises yet again, drawing on new ideas and on moods that have only been touched upon in his previous work.

The album seems to have a flowing sense of narrative, something akin to an opera, and unusually Aaron sings songs on it, which reinforces the sense of an emotional journey. Sonically he meshes together sometimes thunderous yet complex drum programming with delicate musical structures, creating, in places, a sense of haunted, atmospheric Jazziness, as well as spiky autumnal strings recalling the gothic orchestral beauty of his previous work.

Right from the start it’s clear we’re in new territory, with the distressed and violent ’10th Circle Of Winnipeg’, featuring a world weary jazz singer intoning deep emotional loss between crashing breaks and a corkscrewing bassline, giving us a sense of bewilderment and hurt, whereas ‘Deleted Poems’, all mournful strings and flamenco guitar, evokes empty desolation. ‘1000 Years’ is the first time we hear Aaron’s romantic singing with its orchestral accompaniment, coming across with a slightly medieval quality, cut up dramatically with angry fitful drum programming. On ‘Your Smiling Face’ Aaron’s voice is both lamenting and slightly manic over an empty downbeat drums and piano, switching quickly in mood to the cartoony rush of ‘Amazon’.

Title track ‘My Love Is A Bulldozer’ is as close as Snares gets to a pop song, with its gothic, self-deprecating vocals and dark synth melodies, but this is quickly splintered apart by rushing drumwork and metal stabs leaving you breathless. ‘She Runs’ sees things get warmer and more romantic, with epic chords and building, fidgety drums, rushing closer and closer in anticipation towards the end as if they’re speeding towards a destination. ‘Too Far Across’, drops back to sparse, lonely lyrics, the vocals yearning to see a distant lover, over sad plucked guitar.

‘Dear Poet’ is an epic track that starts by working up strings and brass into shivering shapes cut with violent stabs, before amens drop in and the orchestral work becomes a dramatic accompaniment, the melodies darting across the deftly programmed drums. ‘Your Blanket’ finishes off the album, cold, beatless and balletic, gently building some light into the string arrangements, before the track finally forms together with bombastic brass, suggesting a potentially positive end.

Theirs is a highly visual sound, even when divorced from the integral visual element – previous releases and live shows make use of video zoetrope turntables and kaleidoscopic lighting – presenting synaesthetically enhanced geometries tripping the lines between plunderphonics, radiophonics, pastoral ambience and algorithmic splatter.
