Walter Jones mid to late ’90s releases on Vigilante and Dow under the Walt J name have really defined the producer as one of the finest exponents of Detroit House, and much of his output from this time was given a welcome reappraisal courtesy of Aaron Siegel’s FIT Sounds label. Despite an absence of almost fifteen years since the last Walt J release, Jones has lost none of his production luster on the basis of this new material for the fledgling French label Unlearn. As you might expect from the title, lead track “Horns Of Plenty” is defined by those chiming horns that combined with the loose drums lend the production an air of ascendancy that is most beguiling. Kondo Mane pair Aurele & Caseer remix the track and add some French crunch and acid tinged depth to proceedings, whilst Walt J lines the flip with two more diverse cuts – do check “Jinx”!

Just in time for summer, AMAM is pleased to announce the fourth entry in its Hand Out compilation series, titled The Sun Has Woken Up, continuing to deliver exclusive material from established AMAM crew members as well as newcomers, showing the labels diversity in sound as well as showcase how the roster is reaching a more international level.First up, Argentine DJ/producer Ezequiel Esley sets the tone with two tracks, the spacious and sinister Spheres and the deep, plinky Twilight Zone. Toronto rep Andrew McDonnell makes his first AMAM appearance, three varying tracks of smoggy, hypnotic tech-house, titling them to reflect his no-nonsense approach: Whats Up, No Way and Its Me. On the second half, Dutch duo Leman & Dieckmann contribute the synthetic and majestic Workers Ground and Numb for some more jacking moments. Sakro, one of Mexicos up-and-coming production talents, teams up with Chicagos Max Jacobson for Grandeur Of and Going Down, two of the more maniacally percussive tracks on the compilation. Finally, Munich-based Fabio Carra offers the seductively serpentine Jumping on a Prickly Pear and the introspective Wonder Life, signing off in grace.

Big Strick’s latest full-length offering on his own 7 Days Entertainment label is a family affair, mixing tracks from the veteran Detroit producer with similarly deep and woozy jams from his 16 year-old son Tre Strickland, AKA Generation Next. The father-and-son team’s approach to house – wringing atmospheric soul from bubbling rhythms, warm chords and blazed melodies – is surprisingly similar, as shown by the two deep, jazz-flecked collaborations showcased here. Elsewhere, both impress with their individual contributions, with Strickland Junior’s slap bass-infused deep head-nodder “Flynn’s” and sweet, winding “Mo Money” standing out.
