After appearances on Local Talk and Large Wax, UK House duo Purple Velvet elect to go the DIY route with the launch of their own Secret Reels label. Whilst Chris James and Lee Dear haven’t revealed whether Secret Reels will be an outlet solely for Purple Velvet material or it will see them try their hands at curation, this debut drop from the pair sets a high standard. The lead track on All My Days sees Purple Velvet working with Scottish/American vocalist Amy Lyon on a nicely swung little deep house number that you can easily envisage soundtracking the sun setting on the Croatian coastline. It’s well matched by the dusty, deep vibes of “Lost In Vienna” which is worthy of release on Wolf Music, and talking of that lupine London label the B Side finds their artist Frits Wentink turning in a ruffed up remix of “All My Days” that’s a veritable highlight. Quintessentials man Borrowed Identity rounds out the 12″ with a more musically driven remix to offer yet another vibe.

There’s something a little ballsy – arrogant, even – about calling an EP I’m Here Now – The Arrival. It would make some sense if this were Omar-S collaborator OB Ignitt’s debut release; actually, he’s already impressed with a pair of fine solo EPs for FXHE. Still, we’ll excuse him, because the three tracks here are really rather good. “Sweaty Dancce Floor” is typically Detroitian in its fusion of shuffling deep house rhythms, warm chords and futurist synthesizer melodies, though it is distinctly brighter and breezier than much Motor City house. “Ignitt Techno” sounds like a long lost gem from the halcyon days of the Belleville Three, while “Chocolate City (Uncle James Mix)” breathes new life into a Parliament / Funkadelic classic.

Ben La Desh drops his follow up to the very successful “Midnight Rendez-Vous EP” from 2012. Back than this was his debut on Dirt Crew and it gave him great recognition in the Deep House scene. Since that first release he has done proper work on labels such as “Sleazy Beats Black Ops”, “Outernational”, “Young Adults” and most recently on the great “Delusions of Grandeur” with his remix for “6th Borough Project”. In this 4 track EP Ben La Desh digs even deeper in his universe of moody House. Taking the tempo down and making the grooves tight and driving. The pace is set with the first track of the EP “Stellar Talk” that evolves around a great pumping bass line and wide atmospheric textures with hints to some Disco and even 80’s sounds. The second track “Whiplash” is a much darker affair, for us one of the most interesting tracks Ben La Desh has produced to date… it winds and twirls around a phased sound that places the whole mood of the track in a spacey almost sci-fi movie scenery. The third offering is the shiny “Moon Swing” that picks up the tempo again and is a real dance floor joint much like “Stellar Talk” it continues with great sampling and atmospheric “Vangelis” like soundscapes. The last track of this EP is the ultra slow and sexy “Call Her”. Absolutely the highlight for us on this great record. With it’s slow beat and the Hip Hop style break beat and cowbell thing going on this is a real slow burner for those lazy summer afternoons… Chillin’ on a groovy Tip….
