The Moscow-based producer has had a handful of releases showcasing his experimental and open-ended take on dance music, including two on Russian label RAD. He’s a fairly prominent local DJ at underground parties in his hometown, and he also produces (slightly) more house and techno-oriented music as Myown, which has been featured on Ethereal Sound and Left Blank, among others. Dubna, named for the “town of science” in the Moscow oblast, is easily his most high profile release yet, landing on the label that Nicolas Jaar started up last year. Mostly downtempo, it’s a collection of brief, sample-heavy tracks which the press release claims carry a “cold and distinctly Russian organicism.”

For Samuel Evans, or Rain Dog, creating this album was a vast experiment to combine different attempts of blending more traditional elements of song writing and composition with the more contemporary influences of modern electronic dance and bass music, all within the confines of his computer and chair…

Being compelled by melody and variation, Rain Dog, by his own admission, never had much talent for songwriting in terms of lyrics. To circumvent this, however, he focuses on creating a narrative within the music through the combination of synth work and samples. He starts with anything that sparks an interest or emotion in him – Tom Waits, Joni Mitchel, Ella Fitzgerald, Portico Quartet and moments from movies, samples like these usually work as a foundation for the tracks. He then adds layers of unique and organic synth sounds (a notion he finds quite interesting when working entirely from a digital platform) before eventually completing the production with the beat. He likes his music like a nice pie – warm, hearty, and crusty.

Perennial electronic troublemakers Mouse On Mars have been particularly active of late with their partnership with Modeselektor’s Monkeytown imprint, and on this latest EP it’s definitely not hard to hear why. There is a strong current of rave energy at work from the moment “Bakerman Is Breaking Bad” kicks off, as a flurry of acid and snapping electro drums get nasty with an old-skool electronica sensibility. “Cream Theme” has its own rose-tinted vision with dazzling chord stabs speaking of outdoor-party optimism as twisted through a juke-grinder. The title track too nods to tricky Chicago-born percussion and arrangement, although in this instance it sidles through a progressive spread of impulsive suites all crammed into five minutes, while “Migmy” says even more for footwork in a fraction of the time.
