#INTERNETGHETTO #RUSSIA is a manifestation of online culture using the means of yesterday`s technology, the unity and progression. The sound on the vynil record could not be more elusive and constantly developing as on this compilation released by Hyperboloid Records. By going IRL we permanetly install the moment on your hard drive or, in this case, on your record shelf. It is something to touch, turn over and clean from the dust of the real world but it contains the ever evolving sonar and visual experience of young Russia, confined within the borders of the Internet. Remember, when the Internet used to be free? We do and even though the world is even further away from the unity as before, we are united in this thing. Worldwide, but created in the russian internet by the russian internet.

#INTERNETGHETTO #RUSSIA is a product of efforts of already well known producers like Pixelord, 813, DZA, Lapti and upcoming (many of them already happening) like Gillepsy, BWWWOYS, Fisky. This compilation is a two-parter, one comes as a green vynil release, the other part is a cassette with 20 tracks defining the sound of now and the future to come soon enough. This is the project in the making, the first installment.

Elijah & Skilliam are arguably the foremost ambassadors of Grime. Having taken a scrupulous and avant-garde approach to the genre’s output, they have helped raise it to the forefront of the electronic music landscape. Their celebrated Rinse FM show has been representing the best of the scene for 5+ years. Their club nights were some of the first to focus on the talents of the producers, when at the time parties were more about the MCs. Officially returning with a bang last year, their FABRICLIVE residency has brought Grime back to the clubs in a big way.

Brushing off pressure to represent the whole of the scene, Elijah & Skilliam have created something that is current, but not necessarily based on the big tracks of recent times. And with less than a third of the tracks at the typical 140bpm Grime tempo, the mix showcases just how wide their sets can go without diluting their identity and their sound. The mix is peppered with exclusive studio collaborations and VIPs. Royal-T and Swindle built the Intro and Outro from scratch, adding live audio cuts from previous fabric parties; while MCs Newham Generals provided a couple of special versions – a Grime fan’s equivalent of spending a couple of hundred on a rare record according to Elijah. Club favourites ‘Twinkle’ by Swindle & Silkie, Darq E Freaker’s ‘666 Sauna’ and Swindle’s P-Funk-esque studio jam ‘Good Stay Bad’ are among a host of tracks that remained unreleased.

With his star in rapid ascent what with releases on Keysound and Tectonic, Beneath broadens his remit from the more funky-influenced material of the last few years to doff a cap to his home town of Sheffield. “Bored 2” definitely sports some of the clanging experimentation of the bleep-era Warp releases, albeit shot through with the sophistication of modern production. “Occupy” may move with slithering steppers rhythms, but there’s still a bit of LFO heft to the square wave bassline, while “One Blings” has a curious sideline in micro house with the catchy melodic twirls that hop around in the more typically bleak surroundings of a Beneath production.

Following the larger-than-life “Silent Siren” and preceding a new album as a full-band, “Prologue” is an instrumental, introvert musical dialogue between Dean Rodell and Ivan Shopov. If both are known for their beat-driven music, Underhill’s new album is what they listen to and write when the time comes for calm moments and beauty. Underhill’s debut, 2012’s “Silent Siren” album, was a larger-than-life work. Combining the musical talent of three producers (Dean Rodell, Cooh / Balkansky’s Ivan Shopov and Current Value’s Tim Elliot) and including the voices of Martina Astner and MC Coppa, often all on one track, was a major effort resulting in a full and lush sound.

Just as “Silent Siren” was a surprise both in its line-up and its resulting seductive sound, “Prologue” is everything except what one could have expected. Instead of gathering the whole band again for days or weeks in the studio, Dean Rodell and Ivan Shopov chose to work together in a reduced setting. Recorded in the weeks preceding the 2013 edition of the Burn The Machine festival (and including a collaboration with the Bulgarian dark-ambient artist Mytrip on the title track), this new album is a intimate work, which sounds and feels as a concentrate of these two musicians’ take at dub, introvert music.

While Ivan Shopov and Dean Rodell are better known for their club-friendly drum’n’bass and dubstep (the first as Balkansky and Cooh, the later either solo or as part of Machine Code), they are no strangers to much calmer material. “Prologue” is the perfect example of their skills at long atmospheric tunes, dub-heavy ambiences and acoustic tones. An album clearly made for careful home-listening, far from the dancefloor or the concert stage, this new album is what these musicians listen to (and invite you to listen to) when the feet are tired and the brain needs beauty rather than beats.

Harmony and calm in an unassuming, perfectly crafted and compact album: Underhill’s second album is what the electronic scene desperately needs, and a “Prologue” in itself of more music to come.
