Sonic Router Records’ first release of 2014 comes from the South London dwelling producer, My Panda Shall Fly. Long since a friend of the label, MPSF’s music has blossomed through numerous fits, starts and collaborations with his work adorning multiple imprints since he first emerged in 2011. But with his latest 6 track EP, Higher, his tonal and textural ideas have found a consistent voice adapting to the array of different tempos perfectly.

“These tracks are loosely based around the concept of ‘sacred pain’,” offers MPSF of the EP; “an extremely fascinating subject I’d found myself digging into without any real prior warning. After learning about the myriads of ways individuals endure affliction and suffering for their various beliefs across the planet, I recalled witnessing such an act for the first time when I was aged nine, in my home-town of Kandy, Sri Lanka. Without doubt the spectacle left quite a mark upon my psyche, so much so that it evokes this memory some eighteen years later.”

“In my practice, I’ve always wanted to keep pushing myself to explore new modes and forms of making music, sometimes to a point of never repeating or re-using a particular effect or technique that I’d employed previously in order to keep expanding my arsenal of sound-tools.. Upon later reflection, I found that, by chance, the assorted approaches I applied to these six tracks subtly paralleled the diversity of discomfort which individuals put themselves through in the name of religion around the planet.”

*35-minute EP, initial copies pressed on coloured vinyl, mastered and cut by Matt Colton, pressed at Pallas* One year on from their debut, Rainer Veil explore deep, brittle rave variants on their 2nd EP for Modern Love. The five tracks of ‘New Brutalism’ are a product of their Northern environment, making pointed reference to the kind of deep-rooted rave heritage documented in Mark Leckey’s ‘Fiorucci Made Me Hardcore’ soundtrack through a prism of angular, vulnerable club music. Conceptually, it adopts a similar perspective on British nightlife to Burial or Lee Gamble, surveying the ‘floor as if during an out-of-body experience or through closed eyes from a corner of the club at 5am. Opening track, ‘UK Will Not Survive’ captures that sensation beautifully with its tape-saturated layers of wistful vocal, woody 2-step, and daubs of Reese bass, whilst ‘Three Day Jag’ isolates that curious blend of hedonism and introspection innate to early UK ‘ardcore, albeit without the narco-sweats. Closing number ‘Run Out’ doffs a cap to grey building sites and strobe-lit clubs alike, channeling diffuse field recordings and half-heard breakbeats with a bleary-eyed, tired, and emotional quality.

For the third release in our Public Housin series we bring you Texas based DJ Corcovado. We featured him first time on the label around a year ago, on first Bass+Bonez compilation. Dirtiy hip-hop influence his music, and this is something we can appreciate here at Top Billin HQ.

“Do Anything” ft. Arms&Suites is a jacking ode to R’n’B with cut up vocals and upfront percussion that is sure to work on any dancefloor. “It’s Not Over” is a more subdued number with thick UK garage style pads and more of Corcovado’s cut up vocals, this track is made for the early morning sets! “Just Another Freak” ft. Pequino Baile rounds out the EP with classy filtered vocals and a driving soulful pianos that brings back memories of many 90’s house classics.
