On June 2-3 2007, Steve presented a one time Ultra Immersion weekend-long concert event. The 30 participants were invited to the remote abode in southern Arizona Steve was living and creating at; invited from a list of attendees of the last two Tucson concerts they gathered from all over the world on this special weekend. The energy and sense of kindred spirits gathering at the edge of the unknown was something powerful to feel. It was a picture-perfect day in terms of weather and atmospheric conditions. With the participants set up on pillows, sleeping bags, futons and blankets in the performance space, a once in a lifetime experience was about to unfold.

Detroit’s yung hope proves the city’s illustrious heritage is in safe hands with debut album, ‘The Boat Party’. Ever since the first, precocious stirrings of his debut for mentor, Omar-S’s FXHE back in 2007, thru the forward looking inquisition of ‘Zug Island’ with Kero in 2012, Kyle has flown the flag for a brand of machine-made funk experimentalism and innovation that’s often overlooked when talking about his home city. That’s possibly because it’s ostensibly a rawer, rough-round-the-edges style than his European counterparts, but what he lacks in finesse he more than makes up for in flex and effect, forging the sort of rugged grooves that don’t kowtow to chinstrokers or coax the dancefloor, they bloody well insist, and do it wilder, miles better than the mannered masses and disco pedants. His answer to that element characterised by decadent European boat parties – a relatively alien notion from his rooted stance in derelict Detroit – is eight tracks of the grittiest machine funk and soul sentiments, ranging from rogue Jit slammers such as ‘Finna Pop’ to classic-sampling party-starters such as ‘Measure2Measure’, contrasting with ragged rug-cutter vibes in the demented bang of ‘Dr. Crunch’, or the Shake-like itchin’ soul-psycher ‘Spoof’, or the outstanding funk expression, ‘Flemmenup’, all weighing up to one of the best motor city records in an age.

Future Fusion is the killer debut set from Streetwalker, the collaborative project of White Car’s Elon Katz and Beau Wanzer of Mutant Beat Dance/LIES fame. The DIY ethos of primitive Chicago house seeps into the pair’s work as Streetwalker, with the material that forms Future Fusion recorded live in one take. This was subsequently recorded without any overdubs or MIDI to one inch tape, with the resultant six tracks resonating with a loose, primal energy. Sitting uneasily between house, industrial, synth-pop and EBM, Future Fusion is one of those records that you simply cannot second guess. This being a Cititrax release, the presentation is second to none too, with some superb illustration work from the well respected graphic artists Spencer Longo, but in truth the music should be the real focus of attention here.

Ranging from electronica to experimental, from minimal pop to state of the art song deconstruction, this first album of the transatlantic duo Fanatico will comprise a diverse selection of cover songs as well as new original material. Can you imagine Patti Smith and Led Zeppelin tracks with dance beats? You will after listening to Dancing Daze. Fanatico is a new project of DJ-producer Mathias Schaffhäuser and vocalist Jorge Socarrás from New York. The project came about when Mathias Schaffhäuser did a remix of a track from the Patrick Cowley and Jorge Socarrás vintage 70s album, Catholic, which was retro-released in 2009 by Macro Music, Berlin. The two men had never met, but Socarrás contacted Schaffhäuser to say how much he liked the remix. Schaffhäuser, who was an old fan of Socarrás 80s band, Indoor Life, replied suggesting that perhaps they might work together sometime. Through subsequent emails both expressed how theyd each been wanting to interpret some cover songs, eventually leading to Socarrás going to Köln in August 2010 and spending a week recording with Schaffhäuser in his studio. The two had remarkable chemistry from the start, working together as if they were longtime music partners. Indeed Socarrás felt that in Schaffhäusers envelope-pushing minimalism hed found a contemporary successor to his earlier collaborators.

S/EXP lives in a place where the music is hidden behind a dense fog and dreams are suffocated by an unpromising reality. This stimulates him to continue his research of magical places around the world, being them ethereal landscapes, deep cenotes or blue seas. In those places he discovered and created new sounds, melodies and rhythms that melted together create soundscapes for escape.
The Shade’s Journey is the debut album of the young producer Emanuele Pertoldi under the moniker S/EXP formerly known to be part of the Evasion Room project. The album consists in twelve tracks of deep techno and ambient music written and composed using mainly hardware synths and drum machines.
Classic deep tracks such as “The Beginning”, “Shy Land” and “Atlantis” are followed by more experimental and darker sounds as “Lost In Marrakech”.
Styles alternate between sci-fi ambient soundscapes “Take Off To The Gray”and “Indigo Interlude”. Padded techno tracks like “Distant Horizon” adds some dub suggestions reminding Porter Ricks outputs on Chain Reaction.
The bonus track Indigo Oasis ends the album with an injection of electro and blissful pads recalling Detroit melodies from the past.
