Colorlist – Sky Song

a0888417819_10

Label: Serein
Release date: 02-10-2013
Source: WEB, Album
Format: MP3
Quality: 320 kbps
Size: 106 mb
Genre: Electronic
Style: Ambient, Experimental, Jazz

Two years ago, Colorlist released ‘The Fastest Way To Become The Ocean’ on Serein; a four-track EP released on 10″ vinyl as part of the Seasons series. The band’s core members (Charles Gorczynski and Charles Rumback) were both living in Chicago at that time. Shortly after the release of the EP, Gorczynski moved west to Oakland, California, leaving the pair on opposite sides of the United States. The two have somehow managed to keep working together despite the huge distance between them, so we’ll forgive the couple of years it took for ‘Sky Song’, the album I present to you now, to come to fruition.

Sky Song is Colorlist’s third album proper and their first full length release since 2010. The music is deep, organic and involving – it feels like a spiritual successor to their 2008 album, Lists, which had a similarly robust and weighty sound. This may be thanks in part to the complement of modular synths which are present again on Sky Song. The deep, harmonic quality of analogue synthesizers seems a perfect companion to the pair’s usual instruments, occupying the mid-range of frequencies between Rumback’s kicks and toms, and Gorczynski’s woodwinds.

As with their previous work, Sky Song traverses a rich and wide sonic terrain. It’s not music that’s easy to classify because of the array of influences which mould the sound and indeed the improvised nature of many of the pieces. Importantly, though, Sky Song feels focused and coherent as a whole. The album has everything; peaceful and serene passages of music that make the hairs on the back of your neck stand up, deep, driving rhythms that make your feet twitch and occassionally, music that erupts like a firework exploding in the sky.

Colorlist don’t have to stick to one style to establish a cohesive ‘whole’; there is something deeper common to these tracks that ties them all together. There is a quality to the pieces, a kind of airy, openness that I associate with being outdoors. It’s a distillation of a certain feeling, walking in the woods perhaps, the sun dappling the earth below your feet, a warm breeze on the back of your neck; magical music.

Mystiphonic” is the third release from Roland P. Young on EM Records, following “Isophonic Boogie Woogie” [EM1045CD & LP] which was originally released in 1980 and re-issued by EM in 2005, and the 2009 “Istet Serenade” [EM1087CD & LP].
“Mystiphonic” is the fruit of two years of recordings at Young’s Isophonic Sound Laboratory in Brooklyn, “comprovisations” which are more electronic than the previous EM releases, and yet this new CD retains Young’s emotional life-long horn playing, a romance which began in his youth in Kansas City. Also carrying on from previous releases is the all-encompassing warmth and organic/oceanic feeling of Young’s music, a rootedness that has been present since his early exposure to Charlie Parker, on through his San Francisco years and ever forward, linking past, present and future through deep American soil to his world-embracing current music, all united through his “Isophonic” philosophy.
The “Mystiphonic” blend of electronics, percussion and horns is one of subtle beauty, sure to please Young’s fans while attracting new admirers.

The mysticism for which this religion i.e. black magic stands for, has always excited me. On the dancefloor too, a kind of magic and fascination takes place. This is the reason why my new album is titled Voodoo. With Voodoo Sven Wittekind a Frankfurt citizen, makes it quite clear, that his focus, unlike it is normally practised in this business, goes further than over the edge of the plate. For him techno is more than just a sound – pure magic with an entirely own fascination. Week after week when he performs, a layer of magic is covering the dancefloor. It is not only since yesterday that Sven Witterkind belongs to the electronic circle. One would think that someone in the best years of his life is part of one of the most established techno- performers of the republic, publishing his fourth album on 17th of May. In Voodoo each ritual requires a sacrificial offering. Without it, that is how it is written down no magic. Otherwise the gods will get angry. As a rule the most common sacrifices are rum, corn, flower, bread, tobacco or even blood. Already since 1999 Sven Wittekind is known for yet another and special regular habit of special donations to his audience his music. After three tremendously successful long-players, his long awaited fourth studio-album will be released on 2nd May 2013. And this time too, it will be a sacrificial donation to the dancefloor and his fans out there, which listen to and celebrate a kind of common religion. Techno in my opinion is a strong countermovement, be it of a political kind or against the normal flow of everyday life. One meets to celebrate something together and at the same time gain some distance from many things and evoke happier ones. So I celebrate my own Voodoo and use my music as a tool. One can listen to straight techno a sort of further development of its forerunner. He combines Pianos, dubstep-elements, melodies and other facets in his very own special manner. The Wittekind fanbase will have quite something to celebrate when this piece of music will reach the public

As SFV Acid Zane Reynolds makes the kind of gritty drum machine jams that you always hope existed in the early ’80s but only sort of did. His music is at once deeply minimal and expansively textured (seriously, the bass that bleeds all throughout “z!! b!!” is enough to sustain a track all by itself), and as much as Reynolds seems to love vintage gear, it never sounds senselessly retro. Though #2 is actually his second release, it’s actually a look back at Reynolds high school production days, and it pretty much proves that even when this dude was hating math class

Dissolved – Surge Of The Lucid

a0743928286_10

Artist: Dissolved
Title Of Album: Surge Of The Lucid
Year Of Release: 28 jan 2013
Label: Daddy Tank
Genre: Ambient, IDM, Experimental, Glitch, Electronic
Quality: MP3
Bitrate: 320 kbps
Total Time: 00:59:37
Total Size: 136 mb

Tracklist:
1.Heart Of The Well 01:59
2.Your Age In Shark Years 04:02
3.Selmentrasm 06:26
4.Forgotten Processes 09:51
5.Lenslock 03:31
6.Stickleback Red 05:52
7.Machinery In Sea Water 04:52
8.Ski Run In The Distance 08:03
9.On Board The Deuterium Arc 14:57

Dissolved‘s last venture was a shared excursion with Nonima; Paul Daniels’ latest is a solo outing, a little less industrial in nature but still tailored for dance floors. A few tracks are obvious highlights, but the album as a whole is consistently engaging.

By virtue of its unusual juxtapositions, the 10-minute “Forgotten Processes” leaps from the album and runs around the room with its spangles and decals falling off. The track begins with recessed organ and a female spoken word monologue about working in a darkroom. It’s only been a few years since the darkroom career dissolved, a victim of digital processing, but already the thought of developing film in the dark produces a sense of nostalgia. Lisa Stampfli’s vocals recall Sina Hübner of Psychobitch: confident yet wistful, with a touch of defiance. As she speaks of her own undeveloped life and stops wearing her mask, one can sense a growing temporal displacement. Twirling patterns of drums and synth surround her voice like waterspouts. Originality is key; this is likely the first song to include the lyric, “I’m replacing water with silver bromide.”

Of the other dance tracks, “Stickleback Red” is the most effective, due to a 90-second outro that pumps up the drums while eliminating all extraneous sounds. This percussive jam would be well-served by a remix; perhaps it’s time to give Nomina a call again! As for the track title, it may refer to either a fish or an Australian wine, but since it’s an instrumental, few will ask. ”Your Age in Shark Years” adds party banter, IDM textures and a layer of sampled 80s-style vox; “Selmantrasm” is the album’s speed demon at 146 b.p.m..

The finale “On Board the Deuterium Arc” is a risk that pays off, a fifteen-minute track that serves as a musical reflection of the ultraviolet spectrum, the practice of spectroscopy and the danger of looking too closely into the brilliance of discharged light. (As a certain New Jersey artist once wrote, “Mama always told me not to look into the eyes of the sun; but Mama, that’s where the fun is!”) This rotating instrumental never settles on a single pattern for too long, in tune with the natural variances in light gradation. As time passes, it contacts and folds over itself until one is no longer sure where it begins or ends, like a ball of yarn whose ends have been lost. The spell is only broken once, in the middle of the piece, with the spoken words, “Bass. Drums. The D.J.” – rather unnecessary since one would normally be aware of these three things in a club. Such minor indulgences can be forgiven in the service of the beat. (Richard Allen)
