On this debut, Zwei Kreise sheds the chains keeping him held to earth. Methodically plotted chart points give way to dub-infused rhythms that bend the stars inward, close enough to touch. On “Escape Velocity,” Zwei Kreise is patrolling through fields of nebula dust, mining planets haunted by the ghost of Terrence Dixon. Intricate shapes appeaer through a series of seemingly disconnected dots and before you realize it, you’re sitting inside the groove. Zwei Kreise’s lift off certainly makes an impression.

Spain’s finest Colombo follows up his Big-Beat inspired 2012 album “Abandoned Factory” with “Station 21″, our final release for 2013.
Colombo (Alejandro to his mum) takes us on a journey back to the early 2000s and it’s burgeoning “nuskool breaks” scene, the sound that’s become the breakbeat genre we know and love. The album is a love letter to the sounds, the beats, and the vibe of the breaks scene’s roots.
The album opens with title track “Station 21″ with it’s skippy beats and warped bassline, then elevates to higher, more club-friendly heights with the acid-fuelled “Bluish”. Colombo keeps a contemporary feel to the album too with the inclusion of “Sponging” and the dirty and driving “Drop It”.
There’s plenty of deeper cuts here too with the percussive, groove-laden “Four Strokes” and low-end heavy “Destruction”. Tracks like “Nu-skooling” and “Kinship” provide the more “nuskool” rollers here focussing on throbbing basslines and percussion, whilst “Induism” and “Takes The Physical” sounds like actual undiscovered classic gems from the early 2000s.
Big system tracks are well and truly present on the album too – anyone looking for something anthemic and ravey should head straight for “Come With Me” or “Classic Approach” for instant gratification via piano riffs, chopped up breakbeats and sirens galore.
“What’s Up” and “Foreplay” explores Electro while final track “Personal Belongings” keeps the bpms lower but the energy high with a 110bpm finale.
This album pays homage to all things breakbeat in all it’s many facets, and there’s as much here to please new lovers of the genre, whilst being evocative of “the good old days” to original breaks fans.

This 3LP Box-Set presented by the godfather of the genre of Dark Ambient/Industrial, B. Lustmord, putting into its focus the very early works recorded between 1980-83 including previously unreleased material and the very first Lustmord recording of all, in it’s primitive glory.

Lustmord’s intense and aggressive Live Performances in the early 80’s had been recognized by other Industrial Bands like Throbbing Gristle and SPK, the latter leading to a cooperation with Graeme Revell for many years including being a member of SPK and taking over their label Side Effects.

His outstanding skills as an artist and sound designer extended into several further collaborations with artists as such as Current 93, Nurse With Wound, Chris & Cosey, Robert Rich John Balance (Coil), Melvins and Tool, and since the early 90’s gams, television and over forty Hollywood movies like The Crow and Underworld.

LP1 is a remastered version of Lustmord’s first and very sought after LP release on Nocturnal Emissions’ Sterile Records.

LP2 delivers en early version of a track from the first LP plus intense live recordings from 1981.

LP3 provides several unreleased recordings from 1980-83, including one with John Balance, plus compilation tracks from various Cassette Culture labels of that period including Third Mind’s “Rising from the Red Sand”.

London electronic producer Actress has announced a new album, Ghettoville. The triple-LP release is out January 28 via Werkdiscs/Ninja Tune. That’s the cover art, above.

Ghettoville follows 2012’s R.I.P., but according to a press release, it’s really the sequel to Actress’ 2008 debut, Hazyville, “sharing a similar rugged style.” Hazyville will get a remastered vinyl release as part of the Ghettoville box set edition, which also includes a 32-page art book.

The Ghettoville press release includes a statement suggesting this may be the final Actress album. “Ghettoville is the bleached out and black tinted conclusion of the Actress image,” it reads. “A fix is no longer a release, it’s a brittle curse. Zero satisfaction, no teeth, pseudo artists running rampant, but the path continues.

Pausal is the audio and visual art project of Alex Smalley and Simon Bainton, both from Hampshire, UK. “Sky Margin” continues their exploration of combining mostly acoustic sound sources (instruments, field and vinyl recordings) with digital and guitar pedal processing. Although somewhat lighter in tone than it’s emphatic predecessor, it once again sees the drier and noisier textures rising to the forefront whilst retaining much of the reverb-heavy drone based elements that have consistently marked their work. They have performed across the UK and in Europe supporting artists such as Grouper, Mountains, Stars of the Lid, Chihei Hatakeyama and Greg Haines.

Listening to Chair by Berlin-based pianist Simon James Phillips, it is interesting to note that he collaborates with Chris Abrahams of The Necks. The duo perform together as Pedal, a word with links to the ‘Chair’ of this album’s title, and emphasises, the physical link from body to instrument at work when performing music. There’s a similarity too between Phillips and Abrahams’s playing, a fondness for melodic repetition particularly, but Phillips is far closer to Charlemagne Palestine in most other respects.

The physicality of sound production, not just from human to instrument but from instrument to resonance in space, is what most strongly unites Phillips and Palestine. Like the teddy-coveting dronester, Phillips plays with repetition, sustain and the reverberation of the recording space to create rich and blurred walls of sound. So dense is much of Chair that I’d guessed at multitracking, but it turns out the result comes from sound engineer Mattef Kuhlmey’s use of numerous microphones, placed around the “richly resonant environment” of Berlin’s Grunewald Church.

Chair‘s seven pieces tend for either busy density or cautious spaciousness, the former like Palestine, the latter recalling exploratory Spectralists like Tristan Murail or Helmut Lachenmann. These slower pieces are the more interesting, if not as exciting, offering patient examinations of various sonic effects within approachable, repeated patterns. ’9er On Off Switch’lurches forward, all breathy and open, before suddenly withdrawing, like explosions in reverse. ‘Posture’ plods, methodically, like a retentive drunk. ‘Set Ikon Set Remit’ and ‘Poul’ meanwhile erupt like geysers, the sustain pedal held throughout (12 minutes each), particulars bleeding into luminous sludge. Kuhlmey captures both the murk and the clarity with precision, making for another highly recommended Room 40 release.
