How do you stay true to your own sound without repeating yourself? How do you free yourself from the burden of wild expectations? Ultimately, how do you create a difficult second album that bucks the trend and sounds at least as fresh and enduring as the first? Rather than searching for answers to all these questions, Douglas Greed ploughs headlong into his second BPitch Control LP Driven, leaving needless doubts for dust in his rear-view mirror. Just keep on going! Someone else can do the soul-searching, he prefers to dedicate his heart and mind to new tracks.In any case, he was never short of passion or ideas. Douglas Greed has always been driven, and his nature rarely allows him to remain in one place on the genre map for too long. With a musical upbringing ranging from hip hop jams and drum’n’bass parties to the darker avenues of pop à la Joy Division, Depeche Mode or Radiohead, his recent years as a producer and live act have always involved thinking far beyond the usual framework of techno and house. The results of these thought processes, always incorporating the hours away from the dance floor, have already been laid bare on his debut album KRL (Freude am Tanzen) and singles for labels including Infiné, Acker and Gigolo.Driven continues seamlessly in this vein with eleven tracks as rich in variety as they are in detail. The format offers plenty of room to cover a broad stylistic range, always driven by the search for new musical possibilities: from the boisterous peak-time hit Summerless to dance floor gems like Hush Hush and B12. From the yearning pulse of Further to the galloping UK patterns of Fire 5. The featured vocals are another stand-out element of the album: Long Distance Swimmer is arranged around Anna Müller’s dreamy voice, My Mind is a Monkey has support from Delhia, the previously released single This Time feat. Kuss and the title track Driven feature the unmistakable voice of his Eating Snow colleague Mooryc.Throughout the album, Douglas Greed plays with changing moods and tempos, always retaining the perfect balance between track and song, playing equally to his strengths as a euphoric stage performer and a sensitive soul. The exhilarating depth and maturity of his sound and his independent production process mean that all these elements combine on Driven to whisk the listener away on a grand journey. This is a journey driven by the desire for new horizons that effortlessly opens our eyes and ears, revealing that the heart of electronic music still beats loud enough to pump endorphins through our veins. Tracks from The Field’s album Cupid’s Head are remixed by a varied cast of electronic music’s finest talents. Bookending the release are two incredible takes from Wolfgang Voigt’s Gas project, an immersive and atmospheric whirlpool to open the release, and a stilled ‘ambient’ version to close the release, frozen swirls of sound drawing the listener under. Tim Hecker gives a characteristically delicate and emotive interpretation of ‘No. No?’ while Vatican Shadow adds dark clatters to ‘Cupid’s Head’. Barker & Baumecker strip back that same track and let it build with a lean percussive flex, while TM404 submerges the track is icy dub and John Tejada and Sonns provide rich and detailed mixes.

Elijah & Skilliam are arguably the foremost ambassadors of Grime. Having taken a scrupulous and avant-garde approach to the genre’s output, they have helped raise it to the forefront of the electronic music landscape. Their celebrated Rinse FM show has been representing the best of the scene for 5+ years. Their club nights were some of the first to focus on the talents of the producers, when at the time parties were more about the MCs. Officially returning with a bang last year, their FABRICLIVE residency has brought Grime back to the clubs in a big way.

“The mix doesn’t necessarily represent how we would play in the club, but it does feature many of the people that you would hear and see playing at a Butterz night at fabric. It was more focused on making a great mix. If you want to hear how we play in a club, come to fabric.” – Elijah & Skilliam

Brushing off pressure to represent the whole of the scene, Elijah & Skilliam have created something that is current, but not necessarily based on the big tracks of recent times. And with less than a third of the tracks at the typical 140bpm Grime tempo, the mix showcases just how wide their sets can go without diluting their identity and their sound. The mix is peppered with exclusive studio collaborations and VIPs. Royal-T and Swindle built the Intro and Outro from scratch, adding live audio cuts from previous fabric parties; while MCs Newham Generals provided a couple of special versions – a Grime fan’s equivalent of spending a couple of hundred on a rare record according to Elijah. Club favourites ‘Twinkle’ by Swindle & Silkie, Darq E Freaker’s ‘666 Sauna’ and Swindle’s P-Funk-esque studio jam ‘Good Stay Bad’ are among a host of tracks that remained unreleased.

KiNK’s technical prowess has long been a known trait of the Bulgarian producer’s music, and here on Marco he gets to stretch-out his intellectual, avant garde-self more than what he’s ever done for other labels like Burek, Ovum, Boe or liebe*detail. After a long career which, release-wise, dates back to 2005, he’s delivered for the most-part straight up house and techno. But here, after all these years, his debut LP sees KiNK twist his synths and contort his grooves to sound, well, very Macro. Take the confused bleeps and brash drums of “Summa Technologiae” and “Kakavida” or the interdimesional electronics and Hare Krishna chinqs of “Povreda” for example. But for some real dancefloor toughness it’s tracks like “Sintezator” and “Source OF Uncertainty” that do the trick, while for something a little more disco look out for the album’s penultimate track “Tel”. Go KiNK!

Cititrax presents the full length LP by Brooklyn duo Further Reductions. Shawn O’Sullivan and Katie Rose formed Further Reductions in 2008 as an outlet for their shared passion of electronic dance music. O’Sullivan, known for his recent techno releases as Vapauteen on L.I.E.S., 400PPM on Avian and Civil Duty (with Beau Wanzer of Streetwalker) on The Corner has been quite active lately blurring the lines between techno and noise music. With Further Reductions, O’Sullivan’s rhythmic sensibility is fused with Rose’s pop leanings to create super lush and atmospheric tracks that work both on and off the dance floor. Informed by the sounds of classic techno and early house, they subtly substitute the structure of functional club music with a more primal absorption based in their unique collaboration. Seductive vocals coupled with organically evolving sequences create a complex narrative that penetrates the subconscious in a way that conventional club music rarely threatens to.
