This is something Babe Rainbow (aka Cameron Reed) believes wholeheartedly. He hadn’t really made electronic music before starting Babe Rainbow a number of years back, and shortly thereafter he was signed to Warp. Before that, he had been making angular punk music in Vancouver.

Each of these 12 tracks are composed in Reed’s by now recongisable mode of lucid electronica. Stripping instrumentation back to solely piano reveals crystalline and oblique meditations on residual influences from Phillip Glass, Erik Satie, and Terry Riley to Keith Fullerton Whitman and Nils Frahm.

Before joining How To Dress Well on the road during 2012 he had never really played piano besides some occasional tinkering. So when he became comfortable enough to play, he started writing. It became a new challenge with endless possibilities. Appreciating the limitations of one instrument and juxtaposing the experience of producing electronic music with its vast possibilities.

Babe Rainbow’s 1080p debut in cassette and digital form comes as a surprising parallel to his main body of electronic work but aligns closely with the labels ethos as a space for casual experimentation and genre exploration.

The Japanese producer Daisuke Tanabe is back on Ki for a full 15-track LP that will be released on a double 10” Vinyl. Tanabe was initially one of the first to contribute his music to the German imprint with the second release in the labels catalogue back in 2009. Some time has passed since then and the former Red Bull Music Academy participant has evolved even more and cemented his unique sound scape to a recognizable trademark. With his debut album “Before I forget”, a few EP’s, many Remixes and an album in collaboration with Kidkanevil as Kidsuke, he’s now back for more on Ki. 15 tracks full of surprising twists and turns and genre defying sounds and rhythmic patterns.

It was always hard to put Tanabe’s production into one genre and it’s not easier now. If you want to, you will definitely be able to put his music somewhere but you better listen closely and get lost in his incredibly deep and intelligent arrangements. It’s an album that tells the listener a story. Which story that is? It’s solely up to you.

Australian experimental outfit Seekae return with their third album The Worry on Future Classic. The trio works to combine electronic wizardry and invention with heartfelt vocals, broadening their repertoire with an emotive pop sensibility. With ‘Suzi Ecto’ he opens a lucidly gorgeous space between the ‘floor and our imagination, sweeping us thru eleven concisely detailed prisms refracting classic IDM and exotic 4th world ambient thru minimal techno and garage frameworks. It’s all got a very contrary English quality to it, contradicting sheer and prickly textures with blissful and melancholic emotions to discern a systemic sound that plays and feeds off its binaries, from the meld of glassy electronics, airborne jszz sax and mnml dancehall bump of ‘Sulu Sekou’ to the dank but brittle techno jag of ‘Hoax Eye’, and the gyroscopic, head-gone whorl of ‘Acephale I’. Most crucially he nails that balancing act of esoteric intent, and physical, tactile function, proving himself one of the most intangible, elusive – in terms of aesthetics – producers from the UK right now.

Big release for both artist and label here as London-based Australian producer Francis Inferno Orchestra comes through with A New Way Of Living, a debut album on the Voyeurhythm operation, which doubles up as its first full-length project. Having first surfaced in 2010 and dropped numerous 12″s along the way, you feel now is the right time for Griffin James to show what he’s capable of over the length of an album and this is a very confident set. The dusty, sample laden house sound Francis Inferno Orchestra is known for is very much in evidence here but there’s plenty of diversity shown over the seven cuts to keep you coming back for more. The daisy age goes house vibes of “The More You Like” and the weighty beat down “Rap Beef” are immediate standouts.
