From the viral footwork scene to the UK’s current jackin’ sound, the influence of Chicago House has never been felt stronger since its late ’80s explosion. Thanks to several recent compilations and digital reissues, we’ve never had so much vintage and (previously) rare-as-chuff trax available at our fingertips. This selection presents a ruck of those phreakier, raw-ass mutants that were less known outside the city, yet, were arguably integral to the scene’s hardcore ‘floors and beyond. We snaffled highlights from a stack of brilliant sets – we urge you to check ’em all out – compiled by Windy City natives such as Still Music’s Jerome Derradji, Gene Hunt and Kevin “Jackmaster Hater” Starke along with the UK perspective of Terry Farley’s mammoth ‘Acid Rain’ set and Strut’s invaluable collections of Dance Mania ghetto house. There’s also a lesser known, alien Larry Heard gem as Gherkin Jerks, ‘Midi Beats’, and Steve Poindexter’s ‘Night Flight’, plus two prime booty house examples by DJ Deeon and RP Boo whose stripped-down, sample-heavy stabs set a template for footwork as we now know it.
