A recent resurgence of rhythms from NYC/NJ has bred a number of madder mutations in the worldwide ballroom. The stripped-down, punishing dynamics of niche, hardcore house styles have been grafted to instrumental grime, techno and freakier vaporous styles to bring back a much-needed gay, black and latino influence to the modern dancefloor. These 14 tracks take in OG c*nt-slaps from MikeQ & DJ Sliiink next to new skool fusions of grime and ballroom from Gage & Kevin Jz Prodigy, finding the sweet spot between styles and patterns that were previously mutually exclusive – Slimzee definitely wasn’t playing Vasquez tracks in ’04 – yet clearly share a lot in common when run at the same tempo. From the club constructions of Hysterics and Bloom to the Janus club sound of Lotic and M.E.S.H. thru fluoro variants from Karmelloz and Air Max ’97, or rugged reductions by NPLGNN or Rushmore: it’s a proper, testy sound for DJs and dancers who go hard and wild.
