Ivan Masa full lp on Amazing Records follows his september debut ep “Anti Stress”: the four tracker – an exquisite underground old school influenced piece of work – served as a tasty appetizer to this new, aptly titled, “Captain ’80”. This time, the young producer pushes the limit even farther than before: call it synthcore, retro electro, tech pop, nouveau disco, new-new wave, no wave, electropunk, whatever the heck you want to, it’s a daring and ballsy experiment. It’s not easy to find a record nowadays that openly references an era so long forgotten without sounding too corny or self indulgent. Even the frivolous electro revival of the years 2000 – 2004 doesn’t quite compare to this: gone are the make up and theatrical gestures that so much caught the media attention, and in comes a love for sound and song structure. “Mental Night”‘s 808 rims meet an orgy of analogue synth shots, along with percussive beats and creepy vocals underneath. “Hot Coffy”‘s “.you can feel it, you can love it.” vocal hook gets the party going and prompts a 303 groovy bass line, while “Only You” and “God Is Electro”‘s acid melodies and pop vocoders are surrounded by a galactic background of pads and sharp rhythms. “M.M.” boasts even sexier and provocative singings, and some fat polysynths coming right from last century, leading straight to the techno influenced disco music – no kidding!! – of “Last Day”: a proper song, with verses, refrains and choruses. “Help Me”‘s heavy and majestic atmospheres welcome closing track “Flash Back”: a dreamy synth fills the airwaves while tuneful chords play with each other and keep the juices flowing. It’s a simple recipe: take the best euro pop you have ever heard, mix it with the dirtiest Italo house you can lay your hands on, spice it up with the most obscure industrial synth project coming out of pre-fall of the wall West Germay, and you’re good to go.
