The first in two compilations on Nina Kraviz’ label, Ivan focuses primarily on productions from her home country. The one exception is Detroit producer K.Hand, whose “The Box” features a frazzled acid bass smothering what is a standard metallic Motor City rhythm. Elsewhere, the collection suggests that Russian techno producers don’t really do subtlety. Apart from the clicky, minimalism of Nikita Zabelin’s “The Bells”, the other contributors bosh away at the late 130 / 140 bpm mark. Kraviz herself delivers the heavy, relentless “”I Believe I Can Fly” (KLM Delayed Flight version)”, but it can’t compare to her own edit of Philipp Gorbachev’s “Ivan Come On Unlock The Box”, which stomps with all the intensity of Russian special forces breaking up a pro-democracy demonstration in Red Square, effective, in a very primal way.
