Richard H Kirk and Ancient Methods rip the skin off Powell’s mutant ‘Club Music’ EP in a quartet of killer remix pillages for Diagonal. Rigorously tested everywhere from Mancy warehouses to Berlin power stations, the Ancient Methods mixes of ‘Club Music’ are among their very finest; whether in the rictus EBM funk of the ‘Körpersaure91’ version with its stentorian Front242-style bark and graphene-tipped snares, or the ‘phet-sparked clobbering of the manic ‘Pogo Im Säurebad’ – surely their maddest outing ever. Richard H Kirk, however, takes a different tack entirely with ‘So With Went Electric’, reducing its nervous energy into a chugging, narcotically-blunted ‘Main Mix’ and seriously impressing with the drastically eviscerated ‘Dub Mix’. Recorded during the same dream-state session as Whitehope, these three versions subtly mutate and tangentially explore the hour long centerpiece track on the CD-R. When ripping the tape the recordings were laid to, it became apparent that the cassette itself was degrading the audio more than usual. Having tested the rest of the cassettes I ordered in the same batch, I determined that all of them shared this odd trait. The tapes record and play back just fine, yet they seem to process the audio in interesting ways that actually add to the quality of the music. So I decided to release this cassette version of the album, on intentionally degraded black cassettes, essentially making this the “black” version of Whitehope. The nature of the cassette degradation means that no two copies of the cassette will sound alike, and future listens may reveal deeper grades of degradation, making for a truly unique and transforming listening experience. He’s a man who values his 1210s just as much as his classic drum machines and this is clearly evident from the start with ‘For Danilo’ which blends diva-esque vocals with a rolling disco groove and nineties rave stabs to create an unforgettable vibe. ‘Deep Into Amsterdam’ takes us into jazzy deep house territory, with a slightly muted soulful vocal layered below smooth, bright keys and a solid set of percussion. On the flip ‘Discofonk’ continues to celebrate the era of funk and disco in supreme style, aiming straight for your hips and sending them into overdrive. Dusseldorf trio The Durian Brothers arise on Kontra-Musik with Das Macht Modern, the latest release wrapped in sonic intrigue from the Malmo-based label. Made up of Stefan Schwander, Mark Matter and Florian Meyer, this trio are Brothers only in name, and perhaps the unique bond they have for creating music using modified turntables, sequencers and other machinery, an unorthodox method that ensures The Durian Brothers are fully deserving of the term experimental. There’s plenty of variety in tone and sound achieved across the five tracks, even if they all share a certain loose limbered rhythm and ooze organic vitality (in the case of “Secession” it sounds like bodily functions are being manipulated). Flower & Water began with an offer to work with the first Dragon’s Eye release – a flexi-disc with a recording of George Winston playing a blues piano composition called “Medley: Bread Baker’s Stomp” – as source material. Since I am not a true remixer, I decided to modify the track via physical manipulation.
Most of the material began with cutting up some of the flexi’s and taping back together in ‘wrong’ ways. I then played (or tried to play) the broken records that had been taped back together, and also putting objects onto the surface of the record while being played with a cheap record player that had a small built-in speaker. In many ways I felt like I was building a series of temporary sculptures, as I wanted the experience to be physical – similar to the use of hands in making bread from scratch. Based on Paul Novak’s bread making book, I felt I should approach my engagement with the flexi’s should feel a bit like a ritual. I then took the stereo recordings of the objects, and put different moments into a sampler so that I could shift pitches and create loops.

In many ways the experience of cutting the records into pieces, felt related to my own practice, in that my approach to these recordings were quite different than how i’ve worked before – particularly with the addition of such an arduous process of physical building, rather than building the recordings in my “studio”. What is beautiful is that the recordings (done with a small stereo field recorder), captured not only the sounds of the record player, the plastic cups, the stones, and other things I set on the turntable, those sounds were processed by the reverb and echo that naturally exists in the space. So, rather than working within a virtual environment, I tried to keep the experiences as analog activities – with dust and hands, with scissors and scotch tape, and with the ways that sound is activated via dropping, sliding, and of course, listening. My hope was that the messiness of my process might offer some sound pieces that might relate to how a kitchen might look when I might have finished baking bread… with hands covered in flour, with dough stuck to the counter, etc. in many ways the overall group of tracks is a kind of hybrid – with agitated acoustic actions and piano recordings that have become loose and repetitive. The titles were all taken from Paul Novak’s book – A Baker’s Dozen of Daily Breads and More, some were as found, while others a bit more playful – such as wing / ogre / stone which was made up of the letters of George Winton’s name.
