Pupkulies & Rebecca In Remix Janosch Blauls Rebecca Blauls and Sepp Singwalds musicians collective Pupkulies & Rebecca has evolved into a veritable force in the European club scene. The joyous three describe their music as some sort of electronic chanson. You will be able to find elements of house music classical French chanson and folk music. Or in case of their most recent album “Tibau” traditional music form the African island of Cape Verde. Pupkulies very special sonic fabric interlaces the three musicians very special talents: Rebecca’s singing (her voice can be heard in four different languages on the five albums) Sepp’s virtuosic handling of a remarkable collection of analog synthesizers as well as classical instruments and Janosch’s terrific production flirting with the rhythms and the aesthetics of electronic club music. During Pupkulies live performances their fondness for the energy of electronic club music becomes particularly apparent. Having played many of their past 250 shows in the styledefining European clubs they got to know many of the key producers of the scene. Some of those acquaintances turned into friends and they are the remix artists represented here. Each fellow musician sought out a song from any of the albums in order to edit and interpret it in the most personal way possible. Nine exclusive reinterpretations of nine wonderful artists form the consistent narrative of this very special album. Canson / Original Track: Summertime / Album: Tibau At a joint show at the “Hinternhof” in Basel Janosch Rebecca and Sepp met Canson. They liked each other instantly and played together a lot. The busy Swiss producer is part of the circle around Berlins seminal Kater Holzig as well. In his remix he opens playfully with a harmonious charmingly light rendition of “Summertime” which is the perfect opener for the colorful dance of Pupkulies & Rebecca in Remix. Guti / Original Track: Burning Boats / Album: Burning Boats Pupkulies and Gutis paths have crossed many times: a mutual booking agent remixes of each others music and joint shows kept the connection alive for more than six years. Argentinean Artist Guti plays all over the planet but his home base is the Berlin Label “Desolat”. With his remix of “Burning Boats” he manages not only to keep up the voltage without a bass drum but to raise the tension even further. A percussive background a synth a bass and Rebecca’s voice are more then enough to create a flow of its own kind. Sebo & Madmotormiquel / Original track: Save Me / Album: Beyond The Cage The band got to know Sebo in the summer of 2009 when he booked Pupkulies for the “Bachstelzen” floor of “Fusion Festival” and “Bar 25”. They are friends with him and Michi since those legendary days. The Berlinbased label owners of “URSL” chose Save me” for their remix. The song turned into a bona fide summer hit and became one of the cornerstones of Pupkulies & Rebeccas recent success. The two musicians replace the slimmed down rhythmical backbone of the original track with a groove that is only subtly more complex. Furthermore they add recurring vocal shreds and a delay. Giving those few ingredients time to develop to increase their energy the song grows into a true dance floor crooner. DJ Tennis / Original Track: Pink Pillow / Album: Burning Boats As head of the booking agency “Daze” DJ Tennis brought Pupkulies & Rebecca to the Milan Fashion Show of “Costume National” in 2008 thus helping them to land their first gig in Italy. Having founded the acclaimed label “Life and Death” and being a highly successful DJ and producer Tennis approaches his remix of “Pink Pillow” standing firmly with both feet on the dance floor. Yet he succeeds in keeping the mood of the original production on board. After a rather bare start marked by heavy bass sounds the song returns in a new dress after the peak. But clothes do not only makethe man. They manage to wrap the rhythm in spherical sounds with the adhere ease of a beautiful summer dress. Haute couture at its best. Aaron Ahrends / Original Track: Fou De Toi / Album: Looking For The Sea Having heard him for the first time at a joint festival gig in Innsbruck the trio invited Aaron Ahrends and his band “Say Yes Dogs” to support a big Pupkulies concert in Berlins “Postbahnhof” . The virtuoso musician professional sound engineer and singer Aaron Ahrends starts his remix with unobtrusive driving elements which he pairs instantly with voices and harmonies. A melancholic warmth and depth is constantly present in his interpretation of “Fou De Toi” yet this track still manages work the dance floor with good dose of fun and happiness. Mollono.Bass & Seth Black / Original Track: Sound Cauffeur / Album: Burning Boats Pupkulies & Rebecca love to hang out with Mollono.Bass. They owe several appearances at “Fusion Festival” as well as at “Wanderzirkus” at “Ritter Butzke” in Berlin and at “Docks” in Hamburg to the highly active organizer label head of “Acker” and omnipresent DJ Mollono.Bass. His remix of “Ton Chauffeur” is complemented by a violin track by Seth Schwarz. Creating an epic feeling the violin sounds create vast landscapes in out minds and yet they fuse easily into the existing track. This one is a true beauty. Phonique / Original Track: Juvinal / Album: Tibau Pupkulies have been in contact with Michael Father aka Phonique for seven years. Being probably Phoniques biggest hit with more than 30 million YouTube plays the remix of “Feel what you want” uses Rebeccas beautiful voice. They always kept in touch with mutual invitations to shows and other collaborations. In his version of “Juvinal” Phonique heavily relies on the basic motif altering its catchiness only in terms of a even greater compatibility to the dance floor. A remix that makes the sun rise even in the darkest clubs. Mees Dierdorp / Original Track: You And Me / Album: Looking For The Sea They know each other via the Amsterdam event crew “Shoeless” and liked each other from the beginning: In his remix of You and Me the young Dutch producer Mees Dierdop remains close to the original enhancing the clubby elements sensitively and giving the song something of a driving quality that could even be called trancy. Acid Pauli & Nu / Original Track: Saude / Album: Tibau Acid Pauli invited Pupkulies & Rebecca to one of his nights at “Rote Sonne” in Munich and they got along splendidly. The band member of “The Notwist” teams up with the gifted Nu. The 10 minute version of “Saude” evolves into a classic hypnotic meandering dub being a perfect ending for this amazing collaborative effort.
