The sheer quality and heterogeneity of Meakusma’s music can only be attributed to its fine artist selection. Here they call on some of their well-known regulars and two lesser-known electronic excursionists – Ssaliva and Bepotel. Ranging from the moody but equally exceptional soundscapes of Tase on “Reflection” and “Comeback”, to the haunting melodies of the tracks made from the combined talents of Dynamo Dresden and SVN as Dresvn, the record already makes us shiver within its four starting tracks. Mystery man Ssaliva injects some serious doses of sci-fi beats on both his tracks, with “Ivory Tower” being one of the most daring productions we’ve heard in a while. Bepotel makes his voice clearly heard on both “Tower Times Island” and “Nulldup”, two tracks which vary from two-step reminiscent arrangements to crispy, progressive deep house…an exquisite selection of tracks from an ever-growing label. Scottish producer Tony Scott graces Prologue for the first time with a debut album under the Edit Select guise – now as established a name as his old Percy X work was. The Munich label is cultivating quite the reputation for techno album projects, with excellent longplayers from Mike Parker, Echologist, Dino Sabatini and of course Voices From The Lake in recent times and we can add Phlox to that pile. The Scotsman’s collection of mesmerising and sometimes big-room techno productions is a perfect match for the Prologue aesthetic, pitched perfectly between moments of emotional ambience and “hypnotic monsters for the dance floor”. Look out for a new rendition of “Bauer”, which appeared on the Berghain 03 Mix CD and the Dino Sabatini collaboration “Survivors Of The Pulse”.

TERRANOVA returns to the fore with the HEADACHE EP, another impressive assortment of floor-ready house weaponry – after the sublime sophistication of the PAINKILLER EP (KOMPAKT 262) and its accompanying remixes (FM X/PAIN 001), the new material shoves the pendulum back into more rugged club territory, showcasing the sort of sonic urgency and rawness the legendary project has become known for in the first place. As missing links between the dystopian pop of TERRANOVA’s turn-of-the-century work and the slick kinetic drama of their current incarnationon Kompakt, the three cuts of the HEADACHE EP congenially continue the multilayered, nifty thrustof 2012’s house nouveau epic HOTEL AMOUR(KOMPAKT 248 CD 95), but also manage to evoke the wonderstruck immediacy of an act burning through its first speakers. This becomes particularly manifest with the deployment of CATH COFFEY as vocalist fortitle track HEADACHE (also a primer for TERRANOVA’s upcoming full-length). A member of iconic British rap outfit Stereo MCs in the early 90s and collaborator of Tricky, the singer was featured on TERRANOVA’s initial outings and is a well established presence in their early work. On the new 12″, she reintroduces her uniquebrand of battle-hardened, deadpan soulfulness to the searing funk of the reinvigorated project. HEADACHE, a cover of a song from Birmingham’s iconic and controversial postpunk outfit The Au Pairs, as well as its instrumental sequel HEADLOCK are both fuelled by the propulsive beats and upscale hooks we’ve grown to expect from TERRANOVA, but there seems to be something else at work, too – a somewhat darker undercurrent that may or may not be part of the actual arrangement. In any case, this adds much-needed depth to today’s dance floors, providing them with a riveting soundtrack for the most intense of prime times. There’s no need for EP closer TOURETTE to hide behind its compatriots, either: it’s a full-blown thrill ride in its own right, brimming with jittery sampling, arresting percussion and some pretty rad bassline abrasiveness thrown in for good measure. A well-placed shot at the dancer’s solar plexus, this wraps up the HEADACHE EP nicely, giving players and punters another perfectly valid reason for post-apocalyptic celebration.

Fresh from his Hinterland LP for Ghostly International late last year, Recondite is back in action on Dystopian with his crisp brand of techno witchcraft. “Dim” leads the charge with a stripped down quiver of a beat that gently buoys nerve jangling arpeggios locked in endless cycles of minor melodies. “Milk Plus” is equally nourish in its outlook, keeping the drums well and truly at the back of the mix in favour of pealing synth notes. “Nadsat” is marginally more up for it, rocking a sturdy tech house line in percussion even if the overall finish is a stoutly minimal one. “De Large” cools things off once more with mournful chord drones and a hypnotic line in hi hats.
