Stefanik is a phenomenon! On the one side he is that crazy-cool party animal with amazing DJ-skills. His DJ-sets feature a wide variation of techno-, house- and minimal tunes all mixed up in a fresh and easy way that almost no one can escape from. On the other side he is this über-talented producer who sometimes doesn’t sound like his DJ-sets at all. On his recent album for Cocoon Recordings Stefanik painted musical pictures of different moods and for different moments. A soundtrack for people living in the modern club world of cities like Berlin or London. Days of joy and sun vs. grey and cold mornings or foggy and dusty club nights, there was something for everybody and every moment. However with his new release on Cocoon Recordings Stefanik proofs how versatile he is as a producers by creating a vibe that refers more to his DJ-sets. Stefanik melts down different club music ingredients to one unique mix here. We hear influences from Detroit, Chicago and Berlin mixed up in identical quantities. Deeper house meet masculine basslines (“Signs”) and pitched-up Inner-City-like-beats merge with driving hi-hats and chopped up vocal-samples before the whole arrangement receives a proper 90s UK-styled synthesizer-polish (“Illuminations”). This is big, this is pure and it breathes energy. Thanx Mr. Stefanik for this nice mix-up of 25 years of house and techno however all sounding fresh and modern. This only works with technomusic kids!

It’s the first light of day for both Vrac and Subtil Records, so with no background to go on it’s pure face value for this new production partnership. In line with the strong current of minimal records of recent times, there’s a range of grooves from linear patterns to breakbeat flows, with plenty of space for sound design and experimentation around those featherweight frameworks. “Pertu” in particular features some playful sounds and samples that echo out in the plentiful space afforded, while “Amp” gets into a more techy frame of mind with its sci-fi synth sounds. “Boariam” rounds things out with a more rolling rhythm and plenty of dubby textures for a less surgical approach to production.

Hot on the heels of Part 1 comes Polypsilon, Part 2! The second half of the BRIAN-DANCE odyssey is another hour of colorful electronics and bedroom production values. Arguably more diverse than Part 1, with krautrock influenced motorik tracks like “Paul The Pylon”, jungle strains in “Phallusaurus Jox”, a little Boards of Canada peeking through in “Polly Epsilon” and a nod to SAW 85-92 on “P-Boots”. Of course, melodies are still the focus of the material, along with a nice settled in comfort level from working with so many familiar sounds and machines. The whole thing inevitably caves in by the end, and trails off along some long-lost ambient coastline from the depths of my mind. Printed and pressed on a super-limited special edition of 30 copies on white cassette tape, with hand-cut red cardstock J-cards and black text decals. Don’t miss out!
