Hessle Audio’s Pangaea plays ruff with four cuts of sub-heavy and hypnotic techno dread on his Hadal label. Up top ‘Pob’ scopes and stalks its prey with pinging radar blips and heaving subbass rolling into a knuckle-dragging pound, and ‘Mackarel’ ramps the pace to pivot off spare dub chords and tricky acid bassline. Down below, ‘Ivy’ plays out an acute contrast between dainty electronic keys, bass detonations and Sizzla acapella set to twyst the dance sideways, and ‘Solvent’ closes with a crafty-ass triplet techno swing.

Launched last year as an extension of the successful Montreal radio show and loft party of the same name, Jurg Haller’s Forbidden Planet has eased itself into the affections of record buyers everywhere. Inaugurated by D’Marc Cantu’s Some Fantasies Are Good, Forbidden Planet has since introduced unheralded names like Breaker 1 2 and Boreal & Lnrdcroy, artists you can spend hours wandering down blind alleys on the internet trying to identify. The label’s fourth release sees Forbidden Planet call on a more established name again in the shape of Mono Junk, aka Finnish producer Kimmo Rapatti. Much like the Finn’s recent turn out for Skudge White, this untitled four track 12″ really slams home how criminally underrated Rapatti is as a producer. There’s hints of Psyche era Carl Craig to opening track “Shotokai” and from here Mono Junk showcases his production versatility taking in woozy mind benders (“Bleep Number 9”), nimble melodic electro (“With You”) and subaqueous techno filled with deft rhythmic touches (“Kime”).

The anonymous Rhythmic Theory marks their return to the BRSTL label with a markedly different release from the producer’s recent Happy Skull outing, which saw frenetic electro as the primary inspiration. On this two-track 12″ the producer slows things down, with the seemingly Kubrick-inspired “Eyes Wide Shut” combining euphoric rave chords with firm, crunchy rhythms. On the flip, “Voyeuristic Distress” combines Skudge style bass loops with an unsettling string atmosphere that creates a very supernatural take on Detroit techno, and comes very highly recommended indeed!

Previously known for some sleek productions on Construct Re-Form and Syncrophone, the Paris-based producer and DJ Voiski was a surprise addition to the LIES Records juggernaut last year, but his label debut IAI Movement proved to be one of their most popular releases. It makes perfect sense for Ron Morelli to offer a further grip of Voiski productions with the superbly titled and superb sounding Culture To Trash 12″. It’s fairly impossible not to get lost in the rich palette of sound that is the 10 minute A Side track “Wax Fashion” in full flight, and much the same can be said for the closing track “Eccentric Habits”. Sandwiched inbetween is the brutal floor crusher “Bloodthirsty Romantic Shark” (what a name!) which demands repeat play at very loud volume.
