While Redshape certainly has a way with melody, his real skill is drum programming. Even his most metronomic techno productions are blessed with swing, shuffle and a percussive looseness that belies their thunderous heaviness. Further proof of his skill with drums can be found on Bonuz Beatz Volume 1, a quartet of stripped-back but surprisingly lively percussion tools guaranteed to ignite dancefloors. Each of the cuts, from the handclap-laden low-slung bounce of “Itz” and tech-jazz swing of “Finizh”, to the cowbell-laden vintage breakbeat-house goodness of “Dogz” and basement techno slammer “Zteel”, feels like an invitation to lose it out on the dancefloor. Making drum tracks this addictive is a skill, and Redshape is undoubtedly a master of the groove.

There’s been a lot of discussion recently about “new age house”, a decidedly tropical take on analogue deep house with distinct influences from classic ambient house and 1980s new age compositions. Here, Lobster Theremin follows in the footsteps of Mood Hut, Confused House and Future Times (amongst others) with a formidably atmospheric EP from Route 8 (AKA producer Gergely Szilveszter Horvath). Opener “Pacific Paradise” is particularly good, offering an enveloping plunge into ocean-deep waters (think dreamy chords and snappy drum machine rhythms). That said, the darker, fuzzier “I Can’t” and “Dry Thoughts” – all bumpin’ beats and subtle melodies – are just as good and demonstrate the Budapest-based producer’s range.

Max McFerren has long been a staple of Brooklyn and Chinatown’s lofts and club spaces at particularly late hours with his playful but muscular take on techno, but this is the first glimpse into the unadorned but texturally luxurious MCFERRDOG project. Jacked on twisted optimism and Power 105.7 bombastics, “Club Amniotics” toes extremes of fantastical, bubbly weird-as-I-wanna-be experiments and a hugely emotive, open-spaced club vernacular.

Whether goofing off into circus EDM and kaleidoscopic, elasticated techno or hitting ultra-sincere emotions and straight up euphoria, MCFERRDOG is totally uninhibited in this pre-subjective, pre-club ego-forming sphere. Fantasizing an alt Panorama Bar culture, particularly sportive bouncers like “Thesaurus Mode” ride a clearer techno tempo, processing jumped up club signifiers into a super melodic ASMR love story. Mutated neo-rave sensations rise off of the title track (one of the c38s more sensual moments) whereas the stop-start funk of “Rosewater” or slightly drunker “Vulgar Physics” is bouncy and straight up weird.

This dual mind might go some ways to explain McFerren’s interactions with the likes of DJ Richard and Young Male at the same time as playing warehouses with acid freaks like Gobby and Physical Therapy. MCFERRDOG’s strokes are broad; tapping into the threshold of a good idea and reopening recent youth with post-ironic realness and notions of unbridled imagination, fantasy and new age.

Wolf Music turn 25 and pull out something approaching a curveball in handing a label debut to Ossie. Known best for his work on Hyperdub, putting Ossie together with Wolf Music isn’t an equation most people would make, but if you’ve caught the Londoner DJ you’ll know he’s super tight at mixing and plays plenty of classic house. Indeed it’s nice to see Ossie back on the solo flex, having recently been focused on the Black Orange Juice project with vocalists Tilz and Paul Black. Perhaps that time spent working with others has given Ossie a new sense of confidence as the four tracks here are some of his best work so far. The title track shows off Ossie’s innate knowledge of the skip and bounce that characterises UK garage whilst there’s something almost ’90s Armand Van Helden about the heavy disco influenced house of highlight “Forever”.
