The trio of Thomas Cox, Preslav Lefterov and Adam Ratana have been busy since their first EP, The First Four on Uzuri, in 2011. In addition to releasing around a dozen EPs for labels like Work Them and Further along with their own Pittsburgh Tracks, they’ve toured as DJs and live performers, and Cox has become a columnist for Attack Magazine. They remain fiercely loyal to their Pennsylvania hometown, their production ethic (the album is named after Machine Age, Lefterov’s recording studio) and all-encompassing definition of house music. All of the above is evident on Enter The Machine Age: you’ll find the group and their extended family (pets included) on the cover, and a range of styles—from disco to more driving Detroit-indebted tunes—on the record itself. Romanian duo TC Studio has previously excelled with their collaborative projects on All Inn Black, Archipel and their own eponymous imprint. Here, they take a different approach, dropping an album featuring three solo tracks each. Matei Tulbure handles side A, variously delivering smoky, clandestine rhythms (“Bleue”), low-slung analogue fluidity (the bassy tech-house swing of “Sang Froid”) and off-kilter, hypnotic house (the surprisingly melodic “Fine Bouche”). Traian Chereches offers a trio of looser, more organic tracks on the flip, flitting between woozy deep house, jackin’, jazz-influenced experimentation (LP highlight “Pied Noir”) and hard-to-define goodness (“Rouge”, which layers sampled acoustic guitars and similarly organic touches over a rolling, snare-heavy groove).
