There’s a pleasant story behind the latest 12″ slab from Mister Saturday Night, with Okayama based musician Keita Sano discovering the label’s releases in the vinyl bins of his local record shop and inspired by the music was moved to produce and send Eamon and Justin a clutch of tracks. The three cuts chosen from his submissions for this People Are Changing are far removed from the glitchy, instrumental hip hop that made up Sano’s Jewels EP for London label Keep Up! late last year but this only suggests a degree of strength regarding his production prowess. The title track is equal parts high octane and unhinged and really this latter aspect remains a key component of Sano’s subsequent productions, with the electrically charged “She Was The One” a particular highlight.

Steve Bug’s seminal Poker Flat Recordings is back with another essential release – 15 killer grade dubs from the imprint’s rich back catalogue.

These dubs – stripped down to their raw grooves tweaked for maximum deep impact – have long been a major part of the label’s underground aesthetic, and here we get 15 of the mightiest from some of Poker Flat’s top artists.

Tracks by Argy, Martin Landsky, Adultnapper, Alex Niggemann and Boris Dlugosch all feature, with remixes supplied by some true auteurs of the art form.

Lawrence’s take on Donnacha Costello’s ‘Leaving Berlin’ is one of many highlights, as is Steve Bug’s ‘A Night Like This’ from 2001 which receives the Richie Hawtin treatment, resulting in a dub techno masterpiece.

The latest in a long line of slickshot pieces this year, both “5 Feet” and “American Holiday” are two of his shiniest, sleaziest, slinkiest adventures to date. “5 Feet” opens with Nicks trademark organic drums, dubbed-out to create an early night empty concert hall feeling. But the venue fills faster than the naked eye can possibly see as the tightly plucked bass guitar drops into the pocket of a supreme classic old school house pattern. Adorned with Nick’s simple falsetto vocal hook, theres a cool Bootsy-meets-LCD vibe running throughout. Sexy, infectious and purring with groove science. “American Holiday” takes us much deeper into Monaco’s outer-dimension. Drama trembles off every space-out tub-thump before a stark piano hook takes intro duties. Suddenly replaced by a shimmering guitar line, were soon massaged by crying synth stretches, an array of percussive sprinkles and bold synth leads. Part Amazonian, part Neptunian, this track is definitely outside the box. Every Nick Monaco track is essential in our ears, but there really is a deep sense of next levelism to these two cuts. Five feet high…. And rising.
