XL compile ‘Pay Close Attention’, a label history-spanning compilation album. The album documents and celebrates the key releases and moments from the 25 year history of the label, says label owner Richard Russell: “XL Recordings is a collaborative endeavour, and many people have contributed to its evolution. In the song ‘Out Of Space’, Liam Howlett of The Prodigy provided a blueprint when he sampled Kool Keith of Ultramagnetic MC’s rapping these words: “Pay Close Attention”. And whilst XL has never had any outside ownership, Gil Scott-Heron advised me not to even consider XL an “independent”, because everything is connected. Part 1 of this compilation are the roots of XL; underground music, made for DJs. These roots are still growing. Part 2 features some of the singular talents who have taken the label further than we ever envisioned. There is no unifying genre; hopefully the thread of originality is evident though.”

Man of many monikers Gerd returns to the NY Stomp alias he last used in 2012. “I Feel It Comin’ On”, featuring Matthew Kirkwood, is a sparkling chunk of revivalist US house, with pianos and cut-up soul vocals riding a classic bassline and stomping, basement-friendly beats. There’s a couple of more UKG-friendly revisions in the shape of the Bass’N’Dirt Remix and Dub, while Ovis gives the original a thunderous makeover – all raw drum machine beats, powerful sub and cut-up, hands-in-the-air vocals. There’s also a solid bonus cut, “Beatattak”, in which Gerd laces chopped-up freestyle vocals and dreamy chords over a skipping, US garage style rhythm.

Hot on the heels of Part 1 comes Polypsilon, Part 2! The second half of the BRIAN-DANCE odyssey is another hour of colorful electronics and bedroom production values. Arguably more diverse than Part 1, with krautrock influenced motorik tracks like “Paul The Pylon”, jungle strains in “Phallusaurus Jox”, a little Boards of Canada peeking through in “Polly Epsilon” and a nod to SAW 85-92 on “P-Boots”. Of course, melodies are still the focus of the material, along with a nice settled in comfort level from working with so many familiar sounds and machines. The whole thing inevitably caves in by the end, and trails off along some long-lost ambient coastline from the depths of my mind. Printed and pressed on a super-limited special edition of 30 copies on white cassette tape, with hand-cut red cardstock J-cards and black text decals. Don’t miss out!
