Having provided one of 2012′s most compelling albums in the form of Order of Noise, Bristol-based Seb Gainsborough has announced his eagerly awaited return to the album format under the Vessel moniker with Punish, Honey, to be released on Tri Angle in September. While his previous efforts have been resolutely electronic in their makeup, a press release explains that Punish, Honey saw Gainsboroough wishing to move away from “archetypal electronic sounds” to create something more organic, constructing his own instrumentation including flutes made of bike frames, sheet metal percussion and harmonic guitars.

As well as coinciding with his interest in organic sounds, particularly “how the physical body has a direct effect on the nature of the sound, whether it be harsh or pure, messy, violent, seductive, or strange,” the album also sees Gainsborough supposedly grappling with notions of national identity, and posing the question: “What does ‘Englishness’ in music really mean?”

Enigmatic California duo German Army creates often-portentous music illuminated by fading cultural voices and barren, shifting lands. Short, taut songs, visited by Bollywood dervishes with freckles of exotica, buttressed by fried drum machines lifted from the quarterdeck of Captain (Richard H) Kirk himself, and musically expanded to allow for moments of warmth and redemption, this might be the best outing by German Army yet. Returning to PAN for the first time since 2011’s 19-minute sound piece How Wheeling Feels When The Ground Walks Away, New York-based conceptual artist James Hoff presents Blaster. Based around an intriguing concept to say the least, Blaster is described as a “document of his explorations of computer viruses as agents within the composition process,” using the computer virus of the same name to “infect” 808 rhythms and construct all-new shapes out of the resulting audio mulch. As you might expect from such a concept, the resulting audio is extreme to say the least; glitchy, abrasive and wildly unpredictable, each of the eight tracks splutter and misfire like a jammed machine gun. While PAN’s recently released Miseri Lares from Valerio Tricoli showed the label’s more delicate experimental side, Blaster is very much PAN in full on sonic assault mode.

Twisted, maximalist and hyper-cerebral electronica from New Zealand (now Melbourne-based) producer Tlaotlon aka Jeremy Coubrough, who has produced a number of distinctly frenetic records in the last few years for Dungeon Taxis, Epic Sweep and Trensmat.

After recently replacing the old PC (a rugged dusty chunk of components in an exposed case with no protective panels) on which he built those experiments in noise and dismantled techno, Coubrough explores a new kind of narcotically euphoric virtuality on a new machine, with added synthetic stimulation from a new e-cigarette. For “Ektomists”, the vapour flavour of choice was Redbull; thick plumes of smoke in front of dual 24” monitors displaying several new processes in the Tlaotlon sound.

The four 7-minute tracks on “Ektomists” are multi-rhythmic and techno-influenced, with huge flourishes and meticulous sound design thanks to this more computer generated approach. Where previous albums have incorporated more analog approaches (built with a series of pedals and a 16 channel desk), this newly erudite take on re-negotiating techno’s relationship to machines shuffles amongst hectic polyrhythms but also more linearly laid out drum sequences; post-industrial and slippery, fluid, and accelerated.

Synths, distorted samples and drum sequences hustle for space and attention only to crumble outward into wide open space, an endless-point-cloud vapourized/vapourizing domain. Insanely manipulated, growling digital vocals are drilled into huge, rapturous synth chords that are above all suggestive of an escapist urge to interact with but ultimately soar above power and technology, whether it’s the machine of the NSA, marketing, or emojis.

“Novodene” is a pure out of body experience built in a space between mind warping acid ideals and exhibits looks towards the funky edges of the mechanic with anthropocentric rhythms and a heavy deconstruction of four-four dance signifiers for an ultimately sleek, mechanic but biological experience. “Fuji IV” has the same sort of club backbone but quickly disorients into messy, quasi-techno punctuated with bursts of outer-space synth swirls and brightly mutated textures.

Joining the Seattle-based MOTOR family from the recent techno hotspot Montreal is The H with their EP, Sewer Club. More commonly known for their separate projects, Hobo Cubes and Noir, The H is formed by sound artists Francesco de Gallo and Jesse Osborne-Lanthier. Their collaboration is an effortless blend of ambient sensibilities within techno-informed zones.
Fresh from creating the latest Hobo Cubes release, Apex Ideals (DBL083), on which Osborne-Lanthier assisted de Gallo in mixing and production, the pair bring a dark and crunchy sound for Sewer Club akin to Fennesz meets Sandwell District. The two track 12” EP is an extension of the approach to digital time stretching techniques heard on that recent output, with a big focus on floating grimed-up synth pads and minimal technoid beats.
