Aptly titled The Noughties, the latest 12″ from Beats In Space Records features three tracks recorded between 2005 and 2009 courtesy of Tokyo’s humbly dynamic Gonno. A dynamic producer who is clearly not afraid to nest until crucial hatch time, Gonno flies the coop with a wingspan throwing psychedelic color at a sunburst sky. Blending a spectrum of musical influences and personal touch points about the people (and animals) he?s encountered and the implicit joy / sorrow in that exchange, Gonno?s productions blur the lines between art and life experience. Propulsive and busy but light and airy, the a-side “Are You Asleep” tucks in the listener under a sequenced duvet ensuring proper dream state dance floors are availed. ?Salmon Is Jamming?, an ode to Gonno?s collaborator friend and WC Recordings founder who passed away that, strides on the sweet sorrow of a longing guitar line and a building synth billow. The final phreak-phonetic cut “Notoize” creates a fugue state cross-processing the vague, hyper-evolution of a decade that we’re either catching up to or completely eating its dust. If you ask us, we’re all gonners. Each 12? from Beats in Space Records features original artwork in considerate and serial form. This 12? features the Bardo freebasing of Perks & Mini mastermind Mischa Hollenbach spanning an additional two panels of heavy duty inner sleeve. Safety Scissors has already featured quite prominently on Ellen Allien’s BPitch Control, a label which readily guarantees quality on all fronts, but this is his first full-length work for the imprint and only his third altogether. It’s certainly bold and different to many other things featuring on the label, but Mr. Scissors has created quite a spectacle, where acoustic-ambient moments such as “Moving Light” are intertwined with maniacal beat-shredding like “Somnambulance”, the straighter 4/4 licks of “Gemini” or even the laid-back, pop rhythms of “Progress & Perseverance” and the glitchy, vocal-led flex on “Lights Out”. It’s great to see such a successful electronic label doing things just that little bit differently!

Crafted from a shared interest of the odd folk nature of Britain and the resultant dark strangeness, Throwing Snow and Augustus Ghost pool their individual inspirations, ideas and styles on ‘A Small Murmuration’, the first full-length album under their collaborative Snow Ghosts moniker.

Throwing Snow, aka Ross Tones, first started working with Augustus Ghost, aka Hannah Cartwright, after she first arrived in England five years ago. Hannah comes from a songwriting background, having previously collaborated with Phaeleh as well as singing in the band Masakichi, while Ross possesses more electronic influences – his work as Throwing Snow has gained plaudits from all sides, manifested most recently through invitations to support Bonobo on his forthcoming tour, as well as Thom Yorke’s Atoms For Peace project. Together, the pair shared a mutual influence of the shadowy elements of folk and metal, and it is through these reference points that Snow Ghosts began to take shape.

They first found an outlet for their music through Black Acre Records in 2011 on the ‘Lost At Sea’ EP, and the pair have spent the subsequent two years compiling their debut album through short bursts of writing. In that time everything was done together, from field recording (everything from desperately hanging a mic out the window to record a thunder storm on ‘And The World Was Gone’, to recording leaves rustling in Tower Hamlets graveyard, to an ancient zither and bowed fretless acoustic bass), to reading the same literature – Mark Z Danielewski’s ‘House of Leaves’ left a particularly strong impression on their shared head-space.

The music itself is brooding and at times imposing, yet sweepingly majestic throughout – Augustus Ghost’s rich vocals balance perfectly on Throwing Snow’s sombre sonic creations, as hints of industry and mechanism are married with the organic, natural world. The album’s title – ‘A Small Murmuration’ – combines Ross’ love of chaos theory and Hannah’s earthy propensity for nature. The theme is reflected in the imagery surrounding the album – the artwork and photographs come from Hannah’s grandfather in the 1930s, and form a special attachment to each of the tracks. Additional illustration was done by Matthew Ellwood, one of Ross’ oldest and closest friends, who also provided the art for the Black Acre EP. The album as a whole feels little need or desire to fit alongside any current trends, instead focusing on a fundamental formula: of close collaboration, shared interests, and strong friendship.

Left Blank return after a short hiatus with their first release of 2013 from Saa; a new project forged across borders between Asher Levitas of acclaimed shadowy London outfit Old Apparatus, and Norwegian avant-garde musician and vocalist Linn Carin Dirdal.

Taking cues from classic pop production of the 70’s and 80’s, the early 4AD sound of The Cocteau Twins et al, pastoral folk, along with contemporaries such as The Knife, Saa make gloriously intricate avant-pop, as exciting as it is unclassifiable.

Levitas’ high production values will come as no surprise to fans of the aforementioned Old Apparatus, and here his complex rhythm arrangements and delicate electronics perfectly support Dirdal’s layered vocals, which range from upfront and powerful to moments of choral beauty.
