We kick off our 2014 survey with 14 crucial mutations that twyst the lines of grime, trance and footwork to nexx level results. Lars T C F Holdhus proved to be one of this year’s most exciting, intriguing artists, and fronts this selection with the cryptography-inspired, gyroscopic post-hardstyle sweep of ’54 C6 …’ beside DJ B.Boy’s slo-mo bullet from Lisbon, ‘Moh Cota’ and a couple of other Latinate zingers from the brilliant NMO and Arca. Lorenzo Senni also made our year with his stunning ‘Superimpositions’ LP, from which we’ve included ‘PointillisticT’, alongside Matthewdavid’s heady soul spinner ‘In My World’. It was a vintage annum for instrumental grime, epitomised in Mumdance’s ridiculous ‘Don’t Get Lemon’ construction with Spyro for Rinse, and equally with Bloom’s shocking ‘Cld Grip’ or the staggered grime-techno of Air Max ’97. From Chicago, DJ Rashad (R.I.P) and DJ Earl’s footwork productions for Hyperdub knocked us sideways, and the uniquely incisive rhythm deconstructions of Ueno Masaaki, Gábor Lázár and Fis offer sharply contrasting, new rhythm solutions. Join us for part two next week where we’ll focus on other stylistic areas of excellence released over the last twelve months.

Portland-based producer Kevin Palmer operates under his Best Available Technology guide for a grainy, debut release on Throwing Snow’s offshoot Left_Blank. Opening title cut ‘Neon Razor Chain’ draws on a haunting backdrop with a dominating, grizzly chord on top followed by droning depth-charge palpitations on ‘Strobic’. From here, the mood shifts to windswept, dispersed beats on ‘Jackal Code’ to the metallic, Vainqueur-styled dub expanses on ‘Digi Hex’ and finally ‘Anti Code’ with its clashing textures.

It’s been four years since Lonelady’s debut album dropped on Warp Records, but now this fresh single suggests renewed activity from the Manchester-based post-punk and synth-pop influenced artist. The original of “Groove It Out” is a taut funk workout rich in its production from hooky bass to ’80s chimes to acoustic strums, capturing a little of The Cure and a little of Prince amongst many other well-realised reference points. Her own “Michigan Dub” of the track gets into a more focused club mentality that pivots around a sturdy bassline and stiff drums, before Ekoplekz delivers the kind of audacious dub reworking that would make Adrian Sherwood shiver in his delays.

A playful electronic musical journey evocative of Brian Eno’s ‘Music For Films’, Oneohtrix Point Never, 8-bit soundtracks and prog-infused 70s synth epics and executed with a rigorous conceptual framework worthy of John Cage or the radical film experiments of Lars Von Trier. ‘Solarispellis’ is the follow up to Arandel’s 2010 debut album ‘In D’ and similarly continues to be entirely in his signature key (a nod to minimalist godfather Terry Riley). From woozy electronica to emotive techno and the most vertiginous Krautrock, the tempos, moods and subjects are intertwined, covering an array of musical territories despite the uniformity of the tonic note and chord. There is a paradox to the intricate beauty of ‘Solarispellis’; an almost symphonic album recorded in the living room of a small apartment. The sounds suggest harpsichord, piano, organ or drops of water on a hot tin roof although almost every sound you hear was synthesized. There’s a scholarly approach to the music but it does not require any effort on the audience’s part.
