It would be a little lazy to suggest that there are echoes of Bjork in the work of Finnish ‘multimedia artist’ turned oddball pop chanteuse Keidi Kilpelainen. Yet her adventurous approach – mixing crunchy, icy electronics with curious synth-pop and grandiose showtunes – does show some similarities with the acclaimed Icelandic songstress. This third full length, her first since 2008, further develops her pleasingly bizarre style, whilst retaining enough pop savvy and refined musicality to impress those who see her HK119 character as a bit of a joke. Certainly, it’s an enjoyable album and stands up to comparisons with the likes of Nicolette, who excelled at this kind of acid-fried electronica 10 years ago.

Normally, producers can spend years building up to recording their first full-length. Usually, there’ll be a string of singles, EPs and remixes inbetween. Belgian producer Kristof Hilde Hugo Michiels, aka King DJ, has decided to do it differently. Having previously only released two very low-key EPs for Bear Funk (in 2010 and 2012 respectively), he’s now delivered his debut album. While that’s a surprise, what’s even more shocking is how good it is. Presumably sample-heavy, it’s a veritable romp through electro-funk, P-funk, disco-funk and Italo, with audible nods and winks to off-beat funk-rock, ’80s electro, Afrobeat and punk-funk. Heavy, entertaining and occasionally tongue-in-cheek, it’s a rip-roaring debut that entertains from start to finish.

First VA Compilation of the year for Gooseneck Records showcasing artists like Marco Darko, Dakin Auret, Thomas De Lorenzo, Zuckre, Paul Stott and Denis Yashin and their many different musical styles across 18 tracks. It all kicks off with Marco Darko’s ‘Any Kind Of Fun’, a nice loose opener with a bulbous bassline and plenty of louche percussive energy. From there, the likes of Igluu touches on woozy, downbeat house that works you into an afterparty styled trance, Paul Scott lays down some killer bouncy basslines and nicely slapping kick drums and Thomas de Lorenzo strips things back to a deep tech mood where snares hang free in big open spaces and scanning synths look to the future as a molten bassline rises up and down through the mix. Dakin Auret’s contribution is a tight and bobbling house number driven by a simple but effective bassline and Moyu ups the tempos with his scraping garage like percussion and big rubbery kick drums. All in all there is plenty to love about the many different shades of house that Gooseneck offer up, with plenty of dancefloor dynamite sure to make it into the bags of the wisest DJs
