Deep, dark and dangerous: Aussie newcomer Portal makes his debut on Phantom Hertz with three brooding compositions that ooze atmosphere and space while retaining all important pace. The trick is development; no track ever sits still, elements twist and turn with subtlety throughout. Great examples of this are the processed hand drums and twinkle gradually throughout “Trauma” and the thunder-like drive of the drums on the subby, eerie “Lost Within”. Drop this and cause dancefloor trauma in an instant.

Londoner-in-L.A Urulu (AKA producer Taylor Freels) seems to have an instinctive grasp of booth groove and melody. Previously, he’s impressed via releases on Needwant, Dirt Crew and Manucci’s Misstress. Here, he makes his debut for Jacques Renault and company’s Brooklyn-based Let’s Play House imprint. While the bold melodies and shuffling house rhythms we’ve come to expect from Freels are still present – most notably on the vivid, synth-laden deep house-goes-Balearic bliss of “Moon Unit” and Ben la Dash’s eyes-wide-shut rework of the same track – he also displays an impressive desire to mix it up. So, “Sound Like Sumo” fuses deep broken beats with heady chords and delicious P-funk squiggles, while “Lunar Larry” delivers enveloping chords, soft-focus grooves and baggy soundscapes.

Having struck up a relationship with Greco-Roman after remixing Valentina’s 2013 single “Wolves”, Strasbourg-based outfit The Svens present their debut single for the Joe Goddard-helmed imprint. “Odeon” is breezy, vibrant and ear catching, delivering the kind of retro-futurist classic house-meets-UKG slammer that’s in vogue right now. Among the most startling spoken vocal that doffs a rather large cap to Raze’s ’80s house classic “Break 4 Love” (this vocal, almost identikit to the original, ushers “bass for love” instead). Canadian producer Hrdvsion provides the obligatory remix, adding a little more old skool swing thanks to some vintage house breaks and even greater, glassy-eyed breakdowns.
