The mysterious Itinerant Dub outfit return with their third outing of raw machine music taking inspiration from classic jungle, dub, techno and grime. Those who have heard the first two records will know that Itinerant Dub have been responsible for some of the most essential music from the bass axis this year, and this third EP caps off their year in style. “Ur My ID” comes split into two parts, the first all rolling subs and whip crack snares with rusty delay trails taking the form of some kind of primitive UK funky, while the second takes a more frantic approach, with wobbling synth textures propelling some seriously hardcore vibes. Finally, “One Step” goes in a more explicit steppas direction, with something that sounds like Kahn & Neek’s Gorgon Sound project filtered through subtle layers of tape hiss and distortion.

Forget any preconceptions of what a Killawatt release may sound like, as his latest Osiris Music UK release marks an exciting venture in to the unknown. Across seven tracks he transects moods, tempos and textures to build his most accomplished and varied release yet, veering between roving techno weapons and immersive sound design.
The EP, ‘Bring Down The Walls’ almost features a mini album’s worth of material, with tracks like ‘Square Trip (Round Trip)’ breaching the 10 minute mark in what is an absorbing progression from ominous, tension-building beginnings before emerging as a driving late-night dance floor killer.
‘Highway Hypnosis’, ‘1625’ and ‘Jack & His Magic Beans’ all follow a similarly heavy path; techno leaning, ground-raising 4×4 beats not for the faint-hearted, shrouded by complex assemblies of bleak, industrial atmospheres. Killawatt turns the EP on its head with ‘Too Early’, a beautifully mournful beat with hiphop rooted rhythms and glacial melodies that chill you to the core.
The release’s darkest moments come with the grinding, bass-heavy churn of ‘Back Into A Fucked Up Recess’, a track reminiscent of Shackelton at his most menacing and abstract, and ‘Disconcerting’ is exactly as its title might suggest; a paranoid soundscape of plunging bass growls and gritty noise amidst offset skeletal percussion.

Following the downtempo pressure of Karma’s ‘How Ya Feel’, System Music boss V.I.V.E.K returns to deliver the third release for his fledgling label delivered purely on 12” vinyl.

The lush atmospherics of opener ‘Mantra’ suspend the listener in deep stasis, as slowly moving textures, strings and low end propel the track. ‘Show Me’ picks up the pace, with an unnerving vocal directing techno-influenced chord stabs, echoing percussion and an arpeggiated synth line that extends and expands itself into the forefront across the latter half.

‘Soundman V.I.P’ brings earth-shattering sub weight and percussive bass stabs that clash with deep atmospherics that are meticulously engineered for big room soundsystems. Finally, V.I.V.E.K takes ‘Asteroids’, the title track from the label’s first release and re-evaluates it with the help of an ethereal vocal line replacing the lyrics from the original.

2013 has seen V.I.V.E.K’s SYSTEM events go from strength to strength, proving Mixmag’s claim of the soundsystem to be “like nothing else you’ve heard” correct. As a producer V.I.V.E.K has seen his music released on esteemed labels such as Deep Medi, Tectonic, Greensleeves Records and Soul Jazz.
