Spring 2014 will see Dutch label Dekmantel release the debut full-length album from New Jersey producer, DJ and Inimeg Records boss Joey Anderson. Entitled After Forever, the album is the natural next step for a producer who has turned out plenty of deep and intriguing techno EPs for labels like Latency, Deconstruct Music and Syncrophone over the last couple of years.

Having been championed by the connoisseur likes of Levon Vincent and DJ Qu before the rest of the world cottoned on, Anderson’s style has proved to be truly idiosyncratic, where near bottomless techno grooves get run through with haunted piano lines, shadowy synth work or elegant drones. There are barely ever any claps or snares, instead just plenty of deeply hypnotic kicks and plenty of noir tension.

“Every track on the album has its own take on my personality, my mentality musically and my vision of off-dancefloor music,” says Joey. “I find it very difficult to create something for people just to like. I’d rather pay attention to making them get close to the album and uncover the ideas within it. Being my first LP, it’s dedicated to my two daughters, Akatriel and Auset.”

As well as two tracks that were released on Anderson’s previous Dekmantel EP, the album offers nine new cuts and kicks off with ‘Space Between Curtains’. Haunting, saddened piano keys linger in the air above metallic synth sounds for the emotive duration of the track. Then there’s the teary eyed, end-of-the-world yet optimistic vibe of ‘Space Colors Ideas’. After that various intimate moods are explored, from heavy and ominous on ‘Maidens Response’ to celestial and cautiously uplifting on ‘Archer’s Ceremony’ via ‘Amp Me Up’, which sees Anderson’s spacious and atmospheric style suck you in with its weird, gurgling machine noises unravelling above an unchanging drum track.

It’s an album that demands and indeed warrants close inspection, and is the sort of work that really transports you deep into another world far away from here. With After Forever, then, Joey Anderson confirms he crafts moody and atmospheric techno like few others.

“The concept of “Cyclonic” is based on recordings of various storms and rain, with recordings of Hurricane Sandy being a massive part of the source material.

Submersion is well known for his dub techno productions and “Cyclonic” could easily be described as dub techno but the focus is much more on a very meditative and spiritual state of ambience, based around the swirling sounds of wind, rain and deep echoes and delays of organic synth stab sounds and chords.

The tracks should be seen as one floating interwoven piece of 60 minutes of pure dub ambient electronic music”. -diametric.

Riding high on the buzz he has generated in the last twelve months, Max Graef delivers this album to Tartelet as a man very much in demand. His style, fuelled on the foundations of sampling funk and soul to a brilliantly modern end, has more space to breathe on this LP, but still the fundamentals remain. “Itzehoe” struts on a lazy jazzed-out sizzle of drums and beautiful Rhodes notes while “Tamboule Fudgefunk” punches its way through woozy synth work and a righteous beat and “Drums Of Death” struts on a perfect disco groove replete with live instrumentation, but there’s a wealth of other tempos and styles all shot through with the homespun jazz charm that Graef has made his own of late.

It’s been a long time between drinks for AFMB AKA German nu-jazz pioneer turned deep house producer Bernard Kunz. His last – and previously only – studio album, Mellowdramatic, dropped way back in 1997. Whereas that was full of jazzy downtempo moodscapes – trip-hop with jazz rhythms – A Forest Mighty Black oozes electronic warmth. While each of the 12 tracks is built in some way around a core deep house sound – think enveloping chords, toasty basslines and intricate melodies – there’s plenty of variety to keep things fresh. Contrast, for example, the twinkling deep house-soul of “Jade Knights”, the horizontal dub-house goodness of “Circumstances” and the head-nodding downtempo shuffle of “It’s All Inside”, a conscious nod to his ’90s trip-hop past.

Built from extensive recording sessions happening concurrently with the creation of the Static Pharming material, Static Physics is a double album of deep drone techno works. The Halifaxian template in 2013 has become a wider and more exploratory one, and translating audio from thought to form is a more and more detailed language with each new recording session. Static Physics represents only the beginning of what is likely going to be a very lengthy mining operation into the cliffs and ruins of years past. Reappropriation of sound as an artifact, rather than a sentimental thought, is key. Only through extensive reduction, transfiguration and mutation can true aural composting – or “pharming”, in this case – occur.
