Elijah & Skilliam are arguably the foremost ambassadors of Grime. Having taken a scrupulous and avant-garde approach to the genre’s output, they have helped raise it to the forefront of the electronic music landscape. Their celebrated Rinse FM show has been representing the best of the scene for 5+ years. Their club nights were some of the first to focus on the talents of the producers, when at the time parties were more about the MCs. Officially returning with a bang last year, their FABRICLIVE residency has brought Grime back to the clubs in a big way.

Brushing off pressure to represent the whole of the scene, Elijah & Skilliam have created something that is current, but not necessarily based on the big tracks of recent times. And with less than a third of the tracks at the typical 140bpm Grime tempo, the mix showcases just how wide their sets can go without diluting their identity and their sound. The mix is peppered with exclusive studio collaborations and VIPs. Royal-T and Swindle built the Intro and Outro from scratch, adding live audio cuts from previous fabric parties; while MCs Newham Generals provided a couple of special versions – a Grime fan’s equivalent of spending a couple of hundred on a rare record according to Elijah. Club favourites ‘Twinkle’ by Swindle & Silkie, Darq E Freaker’s ‘666 Sauna’ and Swindle’s P-Funk-esque studio jam ‘Good Stay Bad’ are among a host of tracks that remained unreleased.

KiNK’s technical prowess has long been a known trait of the Bulgarian producer’s music, and here on Marco he gets to stretch-out his intellectual, avant garde-self more than what he’s ever done for other labels like Burek, Ovum, Boe or liebe*detail. After a long career which, release-wise, dates back to 2005, he’s delivered for the most-part straight up house and techno. But here, after all these years, his debut LP sees KiNK twist his synths and contort his grooves to sound, well, very Macro. Take the confused bleeps and brash drums of “Summa Technologiae” and “Kakavida” or the interdimesional electronics and Hare Krishna chinqs of “Povreda” for example. But for some real dancefloor toughness it’s tracks like “Sintezator” and “Source OF Uncertainty” that do the trick, while for something a little more disco look out for the album’s penultimate track “Tel”. Shawn O’Sullivan and Katie Rose formed Further Reductions in 2008 as an outlet for their shared passion of electronic dance music. Walls take a brave step and dip into the archive of electronic music pioneer and BBC Radiophonic Workshop founder, Daphne Oram, with a spellbinding set of recordings made in London and Whitstable using elements from her private tape archive. The London-based Anglo/Italian duo have made no bones about the influence of early electronic music on their modern sound, which has manifest most clearly in Alessio Natalizia’s solo project Not Waving, and in the gauzy textures and analogue constructions of their feted Walls productions. After being given access to the Oram Archive at Goldsmiths the pair respectfully indulge that fascination, focussing on the unique concrète explorations and alchemical experiments created by the Oram in the ’60s at her studio in Fairseat, Wrotham, UK. In doing so, they form a figurative bridge between that nascent, fervent period of ’60s creativity and a 2014 scene obsessed with the strange infidelities and ghostly nature of analogue electronics. In particular their ten pieces, ranging from haunting two minute vignettes to pulsing five minute scapes, acutely reflect the underlying darkness and mystery of Oram’s unparalleled archive, harnessing the deeply eerie, spectral timbres created with her patented Oramics system – a prototypical visual-to-audio interface – processing and splicing them with an array of pedals, modular synth and analogue effects to create something beautifully in-between worlds. Thanks to a sensitive mastering job by Spacemen 3/Spectrum’s Sonic Boom at New Atlantis studios, the results are rendered perfectly otherworldly making for a striking, absorbing set.

Two years after his heavily charted LP “Who Made Up The Rules” on Ovum Recordings Agaric returns with a second anticipated studio full length album, and this time for his own label We Are. The debut made the #1 position on the Groove Magazine album chart, and it has now become one of the most charted releases all-time on Resident Advisor.

Whereas the morepart of the tracks on the debut were intended for Djs to play on the dancefloor, “Into The Large Air” presents songs which were made in an entirely different way, both from a technical and emotional standpoint. These tracks are all recorded very straightforward from daily sessions in Agaric’s Berlin studio during a fairly short period of time, using original sounds and trying different production ideas, doing multiple takes using the different drum machines & stomp boxes, effects and synths from the world of analog and digital music equipment – One thing to mention about this project is that special consideration was taken into account during the planning stages of this album to make the period of waiting, from the time of the creative process through mastering sessions to the time of the music reaching the listener, as short as possible.

In times of often standardized dance music and a publicity driven music industry the tracks are raw, spur of the moment, spontaneous, melodic, and they open heartedly reflects decades of involvement in a no-genre-specific world wide club scene, where creative people meet, share ideas, sounds, influences, and together produce the power to influence and inspire more people to create, to be original, and to help sustain and continue to grow the electronic music culture that we know and fell in love with.

Cold. Precise. Uncompromising. If you feel that the current musical landscape is lacking these qualities, then Netzwerk der Zukunft will make you sit up and take notice. Because, in the past four years since his last album, Anthony Rother has been doing a lot of thinking. About himself, the world he lives in and, of course, his music. A journey into his soul, which eventually ends at his roots, his earliest inspiration: Elektro. Now, with Netzwerk der Zukunft, Anthony Rother is redefining the Elektro sound of his generation once again.

“The excitement that I can feel in myself and my music right now… Honestly, I haven’t had this much energy and optimism since Hacker, or maybe even Simulationszeitalter,” says Rother, surrounded by analogue equipment in his PSI Studio in Offenbach. There, wholly free of expectations and the paralysing diktat of the dance floor, he has recorded an album over the past year which, in its harsh intensity, he might never have thought himself capable of creating any longer: bleakly hissing machine music, like the last desperate call of humanity from a digital dystopian future.

What does this call sound like? Ich Bin Ewig, the impressive first track on Netzwerk der Zukunft, already gives us an idea. After just a few seconds, it transports the listener to an icy parallel world of electro machine hiss and glimmering black textures, which radiate a threat that is barely tangible but always there, under the surface. In this world, heavy sub-bass still hums in your gut long after your ears can no longer hear it, and robot voices inform the humans of the superiority of machines. The beats also make an impression: at times, they sound as if Rother recorded them inside a furnace slowly gone out of control. “I like to work with the proper hardware. If you delve into the individual sound parameters long enough, you can create a fantastic sound,” says Rother, explaining the often astonishing vividness of his tracks.

Yet while the album, despite all its complexity, really picks up pace with the tracks Schöpfer, Medium and Netzwerk and comes within striking distance of club music, pieces like the purely instrumental Zukunft recall Rother’s aspiration for Netzwerk der Zukunft: “I want to make music for people who still really listen to music, rather than just using individual tracks.” If the album’s mood has been sombre until now, then Zukunft does its best to intensify this sensation. It is a harsh soundscape, which, with its majestic gravity, seems perfectly capable of bringing the room temperature down a few degrees closer to freezing.

In the next track, Technokultur, Anthony Rother explicitly pays homage, not only lyrically, to the pioneers of Elektro, who have famously always held a particular fascination for the Offenbach-based artist. “I worked on the vocal for Technokultur for a long time. The melody and the sound… Finally, I programmed my own vocal effect to adapt my voice to the timbre the track had in my imagination,” says Anthony Rother, recalling many a sleepless night in his studio.

Netzwerk der Zukunft briefly pauses for breath with Der Widerstand, which is almost a spoken-word performance, before the darkness we have come to know returns to the album with Automat and Momentum. Only with the final track, In Digital Dominus, does a faint glimmer of light appear at the end of the Elektro tunnel. The sonic permafrost slowly begins to thaw, and suddenly, amidst all the coldness of machines, there is suddenly room for a little (human?) warmth. And with that, Netzwerk der Zukunft draws to a close.

As the title would suggest, this double pack monster from Roger Gerressen and Ivano Tetelepta is forged from digging through dusty records to create a spotters delight of beat constructions to make DJ Shadow blush. While the pair’s grounding in house and techno shines through, not to mention Nilla’s role as an All Inn offshoot, the real informer here is hip hop, as titles such as “Kool As Keith” attest. Throughout there’s a tone of smoky, late-night ambience which lends itself perfectly to this kind of project, but it still kicks when it wants to. The title track surges forth on a limber break while “Mambo Town” shimmies with resurrected energy. There are plenty of mellow moments to be enjoyed as well, so if you like your beats outsourced then get on this sizable package.
