Kotoba koukan is a suite of four pieces performed by Greg Stuart and Ryoko Akama, which combines the use of various instruments and electronics. The CD title means “text exchange”, which perhaps evokes the long-distance construction method of the music, based on file exchanges and online conversations. In it, minimal electroacoustic experimentation is accompanied by instrumental punctuation: a world inhabited by Wandelweiser, reductionism, concrete music and field recordings but also scorching electroacoustic improvisation.
A series of soft and strained parts, simultaneously electronic and instrumental, was born out of this; a multidimensional music that navigates between many waters. A sound world in which field recordings, tonal and instrumental elements, harsh frequencies and sinewaves intersect and overlap, and where the environment is also involved in the realization / actualization of these elements.
.
We have admired Greg Stuart’s work with Michael Pisaro, Meridian, Joe Panzner and other collaborators for several years, and when he informed us about recording these duo pieces with Ryoko Akama, who we also admired because of her remarkable solo CD Code of Silence, we immediately asked to be a part of the project, which features the mastering work of Joe Panzner, artwork by Matthew Revert, and is released as a co-production with France’s Crisis Recordings, run by Julien Héraud.
