On an irregular basis, I absolutely love to listen to some sophisticated ambient music in the final hours of the day or in early night time. It gives an opportunity to reflect a bit on things and put the mind to rest before turning to bed. The following recording is most suitable for such occasions.

“Architexture of Silence”, the 18th release by Alpha Wave Movement, sees the return of composer Gregory Kyryluk using a very minimal hardware (0% software synthesis) setup and no computer-based sequencing whatsoever. He actually relied on an old-school hardware sequencer as a sketch pad while carefully shaping and sculpting the five gentle movements (all ranging between 10 and 14 minutes in length) that would end up as this full-length cosmic album.

The free-form and neatly structured outcome is subtle and tranquil, taking on slow turns and shapes as it progresses in a fluid, transparent tapestry of soft shimmering and slow morphing (drone)textures. It’s not exactly meditative, but harmonic with a certain soothing, minimal current running underneath.

The 45-minute release indeed is an oasis of tranquility and harmony. Here, gentle flowing textures lead the way on the four tracks, with reflections of distant Tibetan bells, wind chimes, sounds of nature and string instruments to accentuate a remote eastern aesthetic (according the composer).
Occasionally, there’s a slow sequence or a light rhythm implemented on the background, as on “Awaken”. In addition, I very much love the progression of soft soaring pads on the third piece “Tranquility Temple”.

As such, the nicely crafted and dreamy “Yasumu” creates a quiet and soothing mindset to let the mind breathe and settle down after a day in the fast lane of things. Listening to this sonic repose with headphones will do the trick even better.

Middlesborough, UK duo Perfume Advert (Aaron Turner and Tom Brown) pairs deep, crawling techno abstractions with sandy textures and subliminal, blurry synth lines to create new hybrid dance sonics that drift and fade like mirages on the horizon. Born out of this past July’s genuinely hot UK Summer in the tiny upstairs room of a small town house, early experimentations with sweaty 110BPM house beats led to the “Tulpa” cassette – nine completely live recordings of haze-worshipping ambient techno with a backbone of slow-growing, demented house grooves.

The very much one-shot approach (with very little in the way of post production) to textural techno and house sees the dark and murky signifiers that are now perhaps identifiably “outsider house” insist on moving forward with a deep, analogue warmth. The super thick haze of field recordings and noisy (but subtly melodic) textures that back the main Korg ESX-1 powered grooves; lead tracks “Rotted Out” and “Lampers” wobble with a vivid, Sci-Fi imagination as much as a proclivity for warped club grooves. Mechanic rhythms carry the tapes’ overall fantasy atmosphere that is based as much off heavy gamer dreamscapes as much as J.G. Ballard’s or H.P. Lovecraft’s sense of the grotesque.

“Tulpa” is indebted to the ultra-realized stark/bleak oblique dance worlds of Andy Stott, Basic House, Raime, Tim Hecker and Huerco S., but the psychoactive mood that leaks out of Perfume Advert’s vivid amorphous world is clearly the product of two close friends converging in all the right places. Using shortwave radio, Abelton and various effects, Tom Brown’s drones and textures crossed borders into Turner’s slacker funk with a surprisingly freedom in just a month or so of jamming.

Turner’s solo, fog-obsessed work as //Ama took an overtly British post-dubstep approach to the hauntologic but still felt strongly rhythmic, the potent grooves that wriggle out of Perfume Advert’s abstracted, texture-drenched techno are never bogged down in the murky dreamscapes that fill them out.

Sk’p is a name that is instantly recognizable to those who are into some speeded up, playful, incredibly clean but detailed glitch tunes and not a stranger to chiptune madness as well. But that’s just one side of him.
A very prolific and active producer hailing from Belgium, he decided to release on Crazy-Language a very different output from what he usually does, being slowing things down while still retaining his trademark sound of beautiful immediate melodies, clicky beats and a very precise song structure.
Inside Astravel are half a dozen of smooth, slow-paced classic IDM compositions that take no time on getting a warm and fuzzy feeling out of you. It’s simple, effective and very fun to re-listen time and time again, so you can start digging deeper onto all the nifty little details that are present inside. Anzio Green arrive on Rednetic after their debut release “Autumn Honey” on Symbolic Interaction (Funckarma, The Retail Sectors).

After the debut release where Wil and Mark worked on their parts separately in New Zealand and the UK, the new album removes that distance. Working in Wil’s studio in Liverpool the pair drew on their love of late 80s/early 90s guitar music Lush, The Cure, Slowdive, Jesus and Mary Chain and Snub TV. Clear evidence of this can be heard on the track Fall Down with vocals by Kate Tustain (Laska and collaboratively as Innerise), the nearest to Pop rednetic has ever been. As a counterbalance to the liaison with pop there are more experimental tracks such as TallGrass and End of an Error with a nod to acts such as Tim Hecker and Fennesz.

While the first album was very much of a New Zealand vibe this is very much the UK, with London and Liverpool playing a major role. Only the last track “Never Go Back” returns to NZ, with the foundations beginning one evening close to Tennyson Inlet in the north of the South Island, completing the journey that began with the first album.
