London’s Merisa Campbell has been a pillar of the Hyperdub roster since her debut in 2009, making waves with her rolling, UK funky-inspired sound and ethereal vocal stylings. (She also runs her own label, Dub Organizer.) She released her first full-length, Playin Me, two years ago, which RA’s review called called “one of 2012’s crossover successes.”

Hyperdub describe Wait ‘Til Night as “an album of sensitive, lo-fi bedroom music,” with lyrical themes that generally focus on romance and sex. Though her broken beat sensibility remains, the new LP reportedly marks a move away from club material in favour of more R&B-influenced sounds. Synth pop and reggae are among the other reference points mentioned, and Campbell apparently raps on the record’s closing track, “3 Of Us.”

Featuring exclusive tracks from Lee Gamble, Inga Copeland, DJ Earl, Borys, among many others, Hyperdub parse their ambient elements in the wake of dancefloor and sing-a-long sessions. By its nature, ambient is a nebulous term, taken to mean many things by many people. Hyperdub’s definition is one we can really get down with, spanning the emotional punishments of Burial’s ‘In McDonalds’ and ‘Night Bus’ alongside the super-sensual romance of Cooly G’s ‘Trying’ and the ambiguous sensations of Inga Copeland’s ‘I Am Your Ambient Wife’, or the stirring syn-phonics of DJ Earl’s ‘Hexagonic Sound’. It’s always been a crucial part of Hyperdub’s make-up, since the near-ambient cover of Prince on Kode 9 and Space Ape’s very earliest 10″, thru those legendary Burial “mixtapes” to Laurel Halo’s remarkable ‘Quarantine’ and the sheer backdrops of Fatima Al Qadiri, always weighed in fine balance with a tactile, fwd rhythmic corpus. I guess what we and the label are trying to get at, is that most ephemeral notion of soul, and arguably this collection has it in strange, alluring abundance.

Fatima Al Qadiri – Asiatisch

Fatima Al Qadiri is a multidisciplinary artist and musician from Kuwait. In just a few years, she’s quickly built a reputation as a conceptual artist, exploring themes informed both by her own background and global pop culture, through a number of highly acclaimed EP’s, multimedia projects and writings. She’s also a founding member of the production team ‘Future Brown’. Fatima’s debut album is called ‘Asiatisch’, and as the track titles suggest, the record provides a simulated road trip through an imagined China. Musically, the album is a homage to that quietly influential sub-strain of grime, often loosely termed ‘sinogrime’, due to its preoccupation with Asian motifs and melodies, and pioneered by the likes of Wiley and Jammer at the beginning of the 2000s in East London.

‘Asiatisch’ is a provocation which asks more questions than it answers. The title is the German word for Asian. Unlike its title, however, the music on ‘Asiatisch’ revolves around the fantasies of east Asia as refracted through pulpy Western pop culture, in particular, Hollywood, literary fiction, music, cartoons and advertising. Fatima asks what is meant by the term ‘Asian’ in a digital age of viral interchange and the hi-speed trading of cultural bytes, the concept of ‘shanzhai’ proves pivotal, a term whose meaning stems from a wild, out of control zone of banditry, but which has come to be used to refer to the Chinese counterfeiting of Western brands and goods. While this ‘sinogrime’ has had many copyists over the last few years, ‘Asiatisch’ is really the first record that attempts to articulate this weird complex of sonic interchanges between the West and China. With the exception of the opening track, ‘Shanzhai’, a haunting cover of ‘Nothing Compares to You’ with nonsensical Mandarin lyrics, and the shimmering ‘Loading Beijing’, ‘Wudang’ and ‘Jade Stairs’ which sample and distort classical Chinese poetry staging an epic confrontation between China’s ancient soul and the onslaught of the industrial factory machine, most of the tracks blend mallets, bells, gongs, flutes, steel drums and choral atmospherics with the searing synth-brass and the skittering drums of grime, playing melodies that are inflected as much by classic R&B as to synthetic versions of traditional Chinese music. On “Dragon Tattoo” for example, stereotypical iconography of imagined China is slotted into a threatening, robotic R&B format. The carefree pirating of Western brands blurs into a soft-synth pirating of Chinese musical signs. ‘Asiatisch’ is lovingly wrapped in pristine artwork by Babak Radboy from Shanzhai Biennial, and the music was given a 3D sheen by in demand mixer Lexxx. Proclaiming both its love of both ancient and imagined China, ‘Asiatisch’ is a rare album that is both icily beautiful and conceptually layered.

Sam Walton is a 22 year old producer from Manchester who came to Hyperdub after feeding us demo tracks, and started off in 2011 with the ?Walton EP?, the first of three EPs for the label. Since then he?s honed and developed his music into ?Beyond?, finding a really fresh and subtle intersection between music that doesn?t seem to naturally fit together, old eski grime, funky and Detroit house and techno but with smudged edges and a colourful industrial sound palette that gives a real richness to his productions. Walton’s music is never sombre or angry, but is about subtle combinations; there is an appealing, soulful sensuality to his beautifully crafted and joyous music. He says of the album ?I just wanted there to be a contrast between bright and dark, I didn’t want to stick to a specific genre either. Just a vibe.? Walton’s young enough to hear older elements of dance music with fresh ears – a recent Hacienda reunion was an ear opener, hearing the stripped back power of acid house for the first time influenced some of the music on ?Beyond?, in the way that a handful of contrasting elements can be placed together to create an exciting whole. Tracks like ?Need To Feel’ find this idea in action, this catholic but balanced take on production working in effect, with funky basslines, garage woodblocks and ambient atmospherics. On ?Can’t You See’, grimey kicks and claps are pitched against swooning, trancey strings, and ‘Every Night’s tough grimey synth horns work in tune with echoed guitar licks and pumping kicks. Or check the way the clanking metallic drums and 3D atmosphere of ?You And Me? contrast with warped diva giggles. By contrast, a tune like ?Memories? will wrongfoot you with a long, detailed intro before breaking into a track that cuts between old school grime and bitter sweet house stabs, as will ?Grit’s whipping snares, strange rotating bleeps and snaking bassline. ?Frisbee? again works with a grime pallette, a sparse, inventive soundscape of huge car door slams, weird squeaks and crackles, and a four note melody, while ?City Of God’s reverb laden, depressed beatlessness evokes a feel somewhere between grime and dubstep. Alternately recalling familiar dance music but created with freshness and enthusiasm, Walton’s vision is a welcome and highly enjoyable mutation.
