The German artist Robert Schroeder composes, produces and publishes successfully Electronic Music worldwide since 1979. At that time he was discovered and promoted by EM pioneer Klaus Schulze. Till this day numerous excellent solo CDs as well as his success album Double Fantasy / Universal Ave. were composed, produced and published by Robert Schroeder, last-mentioned even reached the US-Billboard-Charts in 1988.

The music of Robert Schroeder is various, but always soulful. He combines spherical synthesizer sounds with rhythmical contrasts, often supplemented by guitars and sometimes also by piano, cello or voices. Schroeder’s music spectrum reaches from Electronics, Ambient, Chill-Out, Adventure, Trip-Hop to Rock and Classical. Electronic Music in the widest sense is the musical style of this artist who has his roots in the music of Klaus Schulze, Can and Pink Floyd.

Pye Corner Audio’s darkling synthetic transmissions had been hovering under the radar for a couple of years before 2012’s Black Mill Tapes collection on Type brought them to a wider and grateful audience. Now, Martin Jenkins finds himself equally lauded by the likes of Sandwell District’s Juan Mendez and Minimal Wave’s Veronica Vasicka as by the UK hauntological set – a testament to the scope and adaptability of his stygian productions. Nonetheless, this album release feels right at home on Ghost Box, and it follows Jenkins’ contribution to the label’s 7″ Study Series last year. If The Black Mill Tapes focussed on the unheimlich but decidedly driving meta-techno side of the Pye sound, Sleep Games gives as much time to exploring its more abstract and oneiric peripheries. Nonetheless, rhythm is foregrounded throughout: from the woozy, tape-warped Boards of Canada-ism of ‘Sleep Games’, via the Xander Harris/Umberto-esque giallo-disco chug of ‘The Black Mill Video Tape’ through to the distant, dubby pulse of ‘Palais Spectres’ and the rolling toms of ‘Underneath The Dancefloor’. Eschewing the tweeness which has arguably softened the impact of recent Ghost Box releases, Sleep Games is refreshingly drug-hazed and zonked-out yet shark-eyed, minimalist and full of post-apocalyptic, cold-wave menace: you can more easily imagine this stuff soundtracking a car ride through the deserted industrial zones of coastal America than a ramble round the Belbury parish and its bucolic environs. At the same time, this feels like a Ghost Box release through and through: ‘Print Through’ is a radiophonic seance right from the grimoire of Eric Zann, ‘Deep End’ has the school textbook sci-fi sigh of classic Belbury Poly and ‘Yesterday’s Enemy’ the occult public service broadcasting vibe of early Advisory Circle.

Daniel Bortz is no friend of excess. Anyone familiar with his previous work is aware of the clear contours that permeate and define his tracks. Overkill, in any case, is not in his repertoire. What Daniel Bortz does instead is pack compatible sounds to- gether from all the drawers in the beat cabinet and arrange them into a system bearing his own inimitable signature. And thats how this album works. Its doors are open, and they in turn open up a stylistic spectrum that effortlessly expands the borders drawn by his previous discography. But it simultaneously comes together as a single unit far more substantial than the mere sum of its parts. Here the individual elements transform to serve a mood, a feeling. That in itself is already exciting. Bortz is unmatched in how he crafts his sounds, how he modulates reverb depths, how he opens spaces and inserts details between the tracks with the precision of a Swiss watchmaker. His nonchalance in turning apparently cool vibes into a fiery inferno is the definition of informed understate- ment. ‘Patchwork Memories’ becomes tangible as an experience through the depth of these moods, through the immediacy he applies in portraying his memories. These are memories Daniel has scribbled down in sketches and arrangements over time. For the album he returned to them, carefully picking those to resuscitate. Hes somehow managed to accomplish this audio self-revelation without stumbling into self-immolation and, most importantly, without losing sight of the laws of the dance floor. Those suspicious that LP productions are for the head(phones) and not for the feet will be astonished at how ‘Patchwork Memories’ brings both to life. It all starts with ‘Alone at Home’, featuring an ocean-depths down tempo vibe that rivals the tracks title in telling the songs story. The deep minor piano appears right away as Daniel Bortzs un- mistakable trademark. Other gems include ‘Spend the Night’, bearing an instantly irresistible vocal loop as an endless hook joined by Daniels bassy voice, which appears intermittently throughout the album. ‘First Love’ features singer Eva Gold and a Goldfrapp-meets-Moloko-under-a-mirror- ball, kick-drum driven disco vibe that makes the track the albums pop highlight. The memories continue, journeying through the laid-back stomper ‘Satisfaction’ and its buckets of club coolness, ‘The Misery Feat. Nils Coren’ looking back on a love thought won but ultimately lost, and ‘Pictures’, a teardrop cradled in discreetly rolling drums and delicate harp strings. The album closes, as all things should, with ‘Friends’, a thank you to all the anonymous people who indirectly contributed to its creation; to those who trigger memories, those who surround us and those who stay with us.

Not a reissue, not a compilation, but something complete new. “To West and Blue” is 50th Rapoon album and 5th Rapoon release on Zoharum label. And this one will become a staple in our CD players for long time. 7 long, slowly evolving tracks appealing to your subconscious side. An album that is definitely not to everyone’s tastes. This one gradually grows on you until you are captivated by its haunting beauty. But there is an underlying uneasiness in it. A sort of clash between reality and a ghost world or a world that is long-gone. With choral voices hidden beneath layers of treated sounds, “To West and Blue” is a stand-out album among Rapoon numerous releases.
Robin Storey talks about this album: These pieces are about the area grew up in in the UK. A peninsula of land which stuck out into the Solway Firth. Surrounded by the sea when the tide was in and surrounded by endless mudflats when the tide was out. When the water covered the ground the line between the sea and the sky was almost non-existent. A diaphanous boundary. The sea came in from the West where the huge skies hung without end in a vault of blue.
The 7 tracks presented on “To West and Blue” were mastered by Maciej Bartkowiak. The cover is based on photos by Robin Storey and the design was handled by Maciej Mehring. The whole production process was overseen by Michał Porwet.
The CD is housed in gatefold sleeve in the vein of Japanese-style vinyl replica and is strictly limited to 500 copies.

NYC-based Bannon got his start via hip-hop production, notably crafting beats for Joey Bada$$ and the Pro Era crew. But the American artist always had a wider idea of what he could get away with when it comes to hip-hop production compared to some of his peers, earning praise for his atmospheric and unusual sounds, particularly 2012’s Fantastic Plastic LP, which landed on Plug Research.

Now, armed with a newfound interest in jungle and drum & bass (reportedly fuelled by his childhood in Sacramento as much as new music from artists like Machinedrum), he’s signed to Ninja Tune and crafted an album of “immersive atmospherics, deep bass and funk-ridden drums,” according to the press release. Alternate / Endings was crafted over a meticulous six months rather than Bannon’s usual quick working method.
