In the here and now of house and techno, a flux is taking place. The newest generation of souls possessed by the beat has never had a better chance to look back at the unbridled creativity and vitality of the 80s and 90s, and channel it into their contemporary creations. The gospel of Youtube and a wealth of mixes with convenient tracklists make it easy for the lazy artist to absorb what was great before and reflect it in their contemporary productions. This of course is of no concern for someone like Franck Roger. He was there in the beginning, and he never went away. In his years of service to the groove, he has evolved slowly and calmly, staying true to his fundamental sound without ever resting for too long. From his allegiance with Real Tone Records to commissions from such legends as Masters At Work, Franck has represented that most dependable and humble of talents; never following the hype or tapping into overused approaches in a genre that has been operating for more than thirty years. In all this time, Franck has only ever delivered one previous album, and so we are very proud at Circus Company to be bringing a seriously overdue long-player to light that embraces the classicism of a true house music great, while writing a new chapter in his on-going story. For sure, there are moments of heart-warming familiarity on Extensions Of Yesterday, and this is no more apparent than in the soulful croon of Francks long-standing vocalist of choice, Mandel Turner, on centre-piece track Sands Of Time. With a punchy, feel-good energy, the track explores the very idea the title of the album points to. There is an abundance of passion and pride for the good old days, but this is about bringing that feeling forwards rather than trying to go back to it. Away from these more flamboyant moments, the album moves into more searching, adventurous tones. There is a hypnotic, dubby sensibility to a lot of the tracks, as luxurious chords echo around unmistakable Roger percussion. You can just as easily find yourself roused by soaring techno visions full of empowering melodies, or subconsciously slide down into smoked-out boogie for the 21st century. While all around him young upstarts attempt to define their sound through the achievements of their forefathers, Franck Roger strides forth with a maturity that can only come from one who has already done yesterday and now looks to the next logical step.

It has been 10 years since Fort Knox Five released their first singles, and this past decade has proven very fruitful for the funky foursome. 2003 saw the launch of both Fort Knox Five and their seminal Fort Knox Recordings imprint. To celebrate this milestone, Fort Knox Five have selected 15 of their favorite original tracks from the entire decade.

Fort Knox Five has had the pleasure of collaborating with some incredible vocalists who are well represented on this collection. Mustafa Akbar of Thunderball and Nappy Riddem is featured on several tracks, as are Rootz and Zeebo of See-I and Thievery Corporation. The Godfather of Electro Funk himself, Afrika Bambaataa is featured on two tracks. Asheru, best known for his Boondocks theme song is on the opening track. Thievery Corporation’s dancehall voice, Sleepy Wonder as well as DC’s own DIY legend Ian Svenonius are both featured. The list continues with former US3 front-man and prolific artist Akil Dasan and the Zulu Nation’s King Kamonzi. Rounding out the list of featured vocalists is Beta-G, on loan from the US Department of Bhangra.

This body of music not only spans 10 years of Fort Knox Five in the studio, but also live performances and dj appearances worldwide. This music has been performed and played for countless thousands of fans around the globe. These tunes have also been heard in such great movies as The Cove (2010 Academy Award Winner), Stand Up Guys and You Again as well as TV shows like The Fringe. No stranger to the wide world of video games, Fort Knox Five songs have appeared on Need For Speed: Shift, Skate It, NBA Live 10, Test Drive Unlimited 2, Dirt 3, Sims and others.

Way back in 2008 Buda and T.O.M. aka producers and DJ’s Torsten Jacobsen and Thomas Berthelsen released their – at the time – long awaited debut album as Lulu Rouge and today the equally awaited sequel lands. After burning the candle on both ends together for 3 consecutive years, Smash TV step in the arena to make a statement. Fresh from the barbershop and straight from the beauty salon, the two native Berliners took their drum machines, their classic synths and their guitar out on a strange 6 month date, and present you now all the babies of this steamy liaison under the family name “Noise & Girls”. It’s an album about the duality of life, the (at least) two sides to every story; its about 2 very different characters sharing the love for this musical niche. It’s about trying to keep out of the mental asylum as long as possible, not as easy as it sounds if your job is the best invitation for a long term stay there. Emotion is a key element of the album, with every track conveying a different flavor, like ‘Go feat Yoko Duo’ projecting a sublime warmth, in contrast to the anxious hustle of ‘Gaslamps’. From the opening track ‘Licht’, which takes a slower approach, giving a moment to get in the right mood, Smash TV take us on a ride, always with one foot on the pedal. Relying heavily on soulful grooves and melodic vibes, the album exposes various facets of the duo’s style. From the bass driven thriller ‘The Wake Up’ to the very chilly title track ‘Noise & Girls’, Smash TV blends smooth vocals with even smoother synth lines. We are all very anxious as to what the future holds for Smash TV. If the past is any indicator, we can safely say they wont stop. Not for the early morning, not for age, not even for money they do it because they love it, and that shines every time they stand in front of a crowd or behind a synth
