Software’s first release of 2014 sees the label move into further uncharted territory, with Death After Life, the debut album of Chicago-based artist Ryan McRyhew, otherwise known as Thug Entrancer. Relocating from Denver to Chicago in 2011, the seclusion and proximity to Chicago’s rich dance music heritage afforded him the time to create what the label describe as “in-depth and unconditional music” recomposing both Chicago juke and house. Nominally fitting in with the current trend for stark, monochromatic hardware productions, with a “pitch-dark motif” running through the album, Death After Life was mainly recorded “on the fly with very few overdubs and zero reliance on sampled sources.” Unlike the woozy textures of last year’s excellent Huerco S LP on the label, Death After Life is a noise-influenced album of techno and experimental beats marked out by its high fidelity sound.

22 year-old, LA-based Pyramid Vritra has been making beats and writing rhymes since he was just ten years old. When he was in high school in Atlanta, he founded the hip hop collective NRK (Nobody Really Knows) and subsequently linked up with Matt Martians of Odd Future after Martians heard NRK’s tracks on Myspace. When Pyramid Vritra and Matt Martians met, they naturally clicked and the collaborations began. They formed The Super 3 production group, and soon after, he and Martians formed the Jet Age of Tomorrow releasing their music via Odd Future.

During the day Pyramid Vritra drives a forklift around a home improvement store in South Los Angeles. His co-workers have no idea he makes music, he says ‘he tries to not talk to anyone there.’ Introverted in nature, Pyramid Vritra allows us to find out a bit about him through his debut 16-track record, Indra. The album swings in and out of darkness and highlights Pyramid Vritra’s knack for rhyming and making obscure beats – all sample free.

Pyramid Vritra reveals that on Indra his production and lyrics contain a lot of emotion. Adding, ‘there’s fluidity and a calm in the midst of complexity.’ Which might explain his name, Pyramid Vritra, which has two parts to it, he adds, ‘the pyramid has sides that are steep and smooth. Vritra is both a god and demon – a demon who kept the waters of the world captive until he was slain.’

Groove Armada’s landmark debut album ‘Northern Star’ gets a special 15th Anniversary re-release with a second disc of bonus material
Back in February 1996 the world was introduced to the funky Balearic sounds of Groove Armada via the ‘Dan Solo / Captain Sensual’ single on Tummy Touch. One year and three more singles later Simba and Big C, the men at the helm of the mighty Groove Armada, proudly presented their debut album, Northern Star.
Groove Armada recorded their debut album over the summer of 1997 in a secluded cottage in North Yorkshire where Andy set up his studio. They worked on dancefloor material during the sun-filled days and the more laid back grooves around the open fire at night. This unique setting no doubt contributed to the albums deeply atmospheric and unique sound.
The album is an easy-going and eclectic mix of music for clubbers, to be used before, during and after the party. The British press raved about the album and the previous singles were received equally well and Groove Armada went on to become one of the UK’s biggest dance music exports.
2013, marks the 15th anniversary of Groove Armada’s first ever release and in celebration Tummy Touch have remastered Northern Star, adding a bonus CD featuring every single Groove Armada track the label released. Enjoy!

Originally released via the short-lived Aquaplano label in 2008 and 2009, the two collaborative 12-inches were exercises in stark, tribal-influenced minimal techno (the label subsequently released two solo records from Nuel and one from Mike Parker before shutting up shop). They quickly sold out and have since been exceedingly hard to find, fetching large sums on Discogs. Now, Spectrum Spools will reissue both records across one double-vinyl LP, due out March 4th. The label struck up a relationship with Dozzy last year, when it issued the Donato Dozzy Plays Bee Mask record that ended up taking number three spot on RA’s list of 2013’s best albums.

Quite easily our favourite 12k release for some time – an incredible blend of field recordings, found sounds and Janek’s signature manipulated transmissions, if you’re a fan of The Caretaker – this is an absolute must. “The composition is his calmest yet, and is based around location recordings made in the middle of the night above the M3 motorway, right at the end of the road where JG Ballard lived, a couple of miles from Schaefer’s studio on the far west edge of London. Ballard wrote his seminal works on car culture, as the motorway was being built past the front of his house in 1973; Crash (1973), Concrete Island (1974). The 73 minute album weaves these location recordings around a series of spacious sonorities, that shimmer with analogue textures and liminal melodies that burnout in the passing headlights. The speeding traffic dopplertrails reveal fleeting passages of soporific sounds that entice you to recline, drift and fade away. An album to enjoy with your eyes closed, on repeat play until the dawn rush hour returns… Lay-by Lullaby was created in 2013 as a sculptural installation for Schaefer’s solo London show ’Collecting Connections’ at the Agency gallery. A pair of reclining traffic speaker cones play back the foundsoundscape from a car radio installed in a little leather travel case on infinite loop.”

Sascha Dive and Christian Schölzel’s Deep Vibes label drops Reboot’s new six-track LP, ‘Deep_V’ – a musical tribute and homage to Frank’s late younger brother who used the moniker – in February 2014.
Reboot AKA Frank Heinrich has appeared across some heavy hitting labels in his time namely, Cadenza, Cocoon Recordings, Moon Harbour and Ricardo Villalobos’ Sei Es Drum, with a steady stream of material being released since his debut single back in 2008.
The album itself was written and worked on all over the world drawing on exclusive field recordings from various locations and finally finished using Frank’s collection of analogue gear back home in his studio in Offenbach, Germany.
The depth to ‘Deep_V’ derives from Heinrich’s polished production ability and curiosity to explore numerous sounds and rhythms from all corners of music – something that has been the keystone behind his familiar tribal and percussive sound throughout his career. ‘Banging Ear Drums’ with its deep afro-futurist groove and South American inspired melodies is the ideal example of Reboot melting down different elements of music into one track with such suave subtlety. Equally ‘Harsh Time For Kids’ infuses a multitude of components throughout a bubbly somewhat house-ier groove with rippling drums and hypnotic beats.
On the duskier side of things ‘Tortoise’ is a long languid cut back affair while ‘How Province Saved The Funk’ is a dark organic exploration through bleeps and whirring atmospherics. ‘Tantric Behaviours’ stands out as a drum heavy piece of work with it’s low-slung sultry beat, along with ‘Che Meloni’(really fun title for all the italians) where Frank develops his distinctive kick patterns into dominance constructing a dynamic record with driving energy.
The six tracks on ‘Deep_V’ are intricately produced compositions, each with a purposeful arrangement – cultivated to simmer on low heat to draw out the delivery of those understated crowning moments that require quality headphones, speakers or a live setting to really appreciate. ‘Deep_V’ is another stellar addition to Reboot’s back catalogue and as expected an incredible body of work.

‘Poemss’ is a musical project from Toronto-based producer and music artist Joanne Pollock in collaboration with Aaron Funk, who’s recorded music as Venetian Snares. They met in Europe but when Joanne played Aaron her music and visited him at his studio, collaboration started to happen soon after. Poemss will surprise anyone who equates Aaron’s music solely with his hard-edged, drum-driven output. The record is the result of a true partnership, with both artists contributing to the writing and performance of the music, the technical aspects of production and to the performance and treatment of the vocals. The result is a collection of soft and dreamlike ballads; Aaron and Joanne’s singing adding both texture and poetry to the album. They explain how the record came about: “This album was made between January and May of 2013.To us, this album is an album of beginnings. It s the beginning of knowing someone, the beginning of a new creative endeavour, and fresh possibilities. The very first song that we wrote together is included in these tracks, and was to us just an experiment. As musicians, it seemed natural to see what we would make. We can hear ourselves becoming more comfortable with each other as it progresses; an evolution recorded in an album. This record comes from a very intimate place for both of us, largely because it was recorded in Aaron’s house, where Joanne was visiting at the time. However, although it was recorded in Winnipeg, to us this record seems less rooted in a particular place or time, and seems more to be born out of our thoughts, dreams, and reflections. Listening back to every track, it is difficult for us to isolate which parts either of us brought individually to each song. We launch each other creatively, melodically. One of us will usually be inspired again to add to what the other is laying down and it works in a kind of cycle like this. It’s a nice way to flow and pleasantly surprising to see what the other person brings to it. Much of the time, it really sounds like the two of us together rather than a combination of what we do individually.”

Desolate Figures is the excellent second album from John Heckle which builds on the strong debut LP the Liverpudlian released on Mathematics some two years ago. Indeed it’s possible to view Heckle’s affiliation with Mathematics as a springboard to wider acclaim – Heckle’s debut EP earned him an honours at last year’s Qwartz Awards and he’s subsequently struck out with weighty slabs of hardware driven techno for Creme Organization, Signals, Apartment and Tabernacle Records. The latter label have become something of a second home for Heckle so it’s no surprise to see Desolate Figures issued through Tabernacle and the nine tracks come across as a very intense collection that demonstrate Heckle’s signature sound is becoming ever more impressive!
