04 Untold – Doubles
05 Untold – Wet Wool
06 Untold – Strange Dreams
07 Untold – Hobthrush
08 Untold – Ion

Crushing debut album from forward UK producer Untold. His ‘Black Light Spiral’ is an airless, borderline-aggressive assault on the dance borne from nigh on two decades immersed in British rave culture. Since 2008, with releases on his Hemlock imprint, for close chums Hessle Audio, and for Clone and R&S, among others, he’s been instrumental in the post-Dubstep field with clinical appropriations of Breakstep, Grime, and most recently, European Techno. He’s regularly touted as a producer’s producer, a don among the baying, bassbin-dwelling throng, so as you’d imagine his debut album is an eagerly awaited statement for many. Across 8 tracks and 40 minutes he eschews any sense of romantic rave nostalgia in favour of focussing on bludgeoning, masculine-dread dystopia. Opening to the cacophony of sirens and distant soundsystem rumble, ‘5 Wheels’ sets the scene before ‘Drop It on the One’ and ‘Sing a Love Song’ mangle strafing FM signals with blown-out, roiling ragga techno sound design, and ‘Doubles’ canters on a dried-out techno groove. ‘Wet Wool’ follows with more amorphous, impressionistic sound design, whilst ‘Strange Dreams’ and the aggy charge of ‘Hobthrush’ rags a jagged, grimacing sort of martial techno akin to recent Perc moves.

The Achterbahn D’Amour pairing of Johannes “Iron Curtis” Paluka and Jurgen “Jool” Albert (formerly Edit Piafra) return to the Acid Test series with a debut album Odd Movements. Since the project first emerged on Absurd’s dedicated acid offshoot in 2011, Achterbahn D’Amour have become mainstays of the series and encapsulated the experimental ethos of the series and displayed a true reverence for the classic 303 and 606 Roland machines. After a relatively low-key 2013 with just the two Acid Test releases from regular contributor Tin Man and famed Frenchman Pépé Bradock, Odd Movements is a statement of intent and sits nicely alongside the other Acid Test long players from Recondite and Tin Man whilst demonstrating the format suits Albert and Pakula well.

Nicolas Bernier – frequencies (a / fragments)

frequencies is an ongoing process focusing on basic sound generation systems. For this edition, frequencies (a / fragments) the system consists of a series of custom made devices in which computer-controlled solenoids activate a variety of tuning forks. The resulting sound fragments, when articulated in conjunction with synthetic sine waves, create frictions between the acoustic and electronic elements.

The tuning fork, producing a sound closest to a pure sinewave, provides a historical linkage between science (beginning as a 19th Century precision tool), tonal instrumental works, and electronic music in all of its permutations.

Sohn – Tremors

Label: 4AD
Genre: Indie, Electronic

Having tantalised with ‘The Wheel’, ‘Bloodflows’ and ‘Lessons’, SOHN has added the final touches to his debut solo album. Eagerly anticipated, Tremors will receive its worldwide release in the week commencing April 7th 2014.

Tremors is the way in which past traumas, as much as past successes, linger like the aftershocks of an earthquake. Even in the calmest moments its effects continue to reverberate and inform who we become. Throughout the eleven songs that form Tremors runs a sense of the nocturnal – a sensitivity to the darkness and its inhibitions – with London-born SOHN adopting a night-time schedule for an intense period of long nights writing and recording in his Vienna studio. “I wanted Tremors to feel like fresh air,” says SOHN. “There’s something about the way I was working overnight on the album which found its way into the sound. Every night I worked finished with a cold sunrise and a walk home… and to me that’s what Tremors sounds like.”

It’s been a while since we heard anything new from Andrew Johnson, former member of Hood and The Remote Viewer. Back In the days when he used to make music with Craig Tattersall we’d sometimes get to hear tapes of unreleased recordings the pair had made and wonder why the picky old bastard was so unwilling to release any of it – it was just so good. So, we’re pretty excited that just as we thought he’d more or less stopped working on music altogether he’s re-emerged with a new project and a whole new album, released under the “A New Line (Related) moniker. Made from what sounds like a rudimentary setup, the sound here is warm and brittle, yet dynamic and even (dare we say it) heavy. We always loved The Remote Viewer for finding delicate balance between fragile production underpinned by super dense bass weight (something that Johnson himself claims to hate) – and on the evidence of these tracks here he continues to master the fine art of keeping those two elements intact. The 11 tracks here veer from the shimmering drone of “People Kissed Underneath Me” to the out-and-out punchy percussive Boogie House of “The Slow Sound of Your Life”, dropping in on nicely swung Garage offcuts with “Late Period (Insert Band)” and even a final dose of Hood-style vocal bliss on album closer “Great Palaces” – making for one of the most surprising and cockle-warming albums we’ve had in for a while, and a real treat whether or not you’ve encountered any of Johnson’s music before. Highly Recommended.

Machinefabriek – Halfslaap II / Stiltetonen

artworks-000064886570-uivtpx-t500x500

Artist: Machinefabriek
Title Of Album: Halfslaap II / Stiltetonen
Year Of Release: 14 feb 2014
Label: Chiheihatakeyama
Genre: Ambient, Drone
Quality: MP3
Bitrate: 320 kbps
Total Time: 00:55:3
Total Size: 120 mb

Tracklist:
01. Halfslaap II [35:08]
02. Stiltetonen [20:05]

Like Halfslaap (released on a 3-inch by Standard Form in 2010), Halfslaap II is a very restrained, meditative piece with a slow and subtle development that seems to play tricks with the notion of time. The hypnotic quality of Halfslaap II comes from two simple violin phrases with are almost identical, but different in length, causing them to overlap at different points each time. In the course of 35 minutes, these floating violin tones are pulling the listener into some sort of dreamstate.
The violin on Halfslaap II is played by Anne Bakker, with whom Rutger worked before on the pieces Koploop (2007) and Fabriek Bakker Fabriek (2008).

Stiltetonen (album version) is a continuation of sound piece that was composed to play continuously in a small alley in Amsterdam. As part of the project Tussen-ruimte (‘Between Space’), the looped, minimalistic piano melody transformed the space to an oasis of comtemplative rest in the midst of the busy city center. With it’s spatious pace, the sounds of the city became an integral part of the composition. For this album version, the piano loop forms the base for a more set composition, complimented with extra layers of audio to create an equally immersive home listening experience.

With a now continuously expanding scene of contemporary experimental electronic music, many cassette labels have managed to push artists into new international appreciation. This has been the case with young L.A.-based producer Neil Reinalda, who has experimented with electronic music under his PHORK alias for about two years now. Though that may not be an enormous span of time, looking at Reinalda’s discography reveals a strong series of mixtapes, some notable singles and a heartwarming discography of 6 different albums released on cassette by outstanding music imprints like NNA Tapes, Orange Milk Records, Dirty Pillows Records, Opal Tapes, and now Noumenal Loom, where this latest effort was recently put up for preorder – pending its official release today.

Entitled American Tao, the 9-track album builds a remarkable ambient/techno-tainted atmosphere in which Reinalda further resolves to create a whole environmental of sound, divided into 9 cuts, deploying his characteristic beats over deconstructed loop backgrounds. Structures of low and deep synth and percussion lines wrap everything into a wrinkled and rhythmic progression, with other novel effects, reconfigured samples, and beat repetitions that narrate American Tao‘s principal texture. I could easily say this is one of my favorite releases on Noumenal Loom, but your doing yourself a disservice if you’ve yet to peruse their entire catalog.

Real name David Letellier, Kangding Ray is a regular on Raster-Noton, having released all three of his past albums—Stabil, Automne Fold and OR—through the Berlin label. In the four years since OR was released he’s put out a small number of EPs, including three records for Stroboscopic Artefacts and one for Raster-Noton.
Typically for both artist and label, a cerebral streak runs through the album, which was apparently recorded to form four arcs across its 12 track duration. “The different sequences are arranged seamlessly into dense, evolving compositions, while keeping their autonomy,” a press release explains. The French-born, Berlin-based producer’s signature brand of grainy, widescreen techno is on full display across Solens Arc, which will be released on double-vinyl and CD.

Dosh – Milk Money

1392919105_front

Label/Cat#: Graveface – 888003 011441
Year: 22 October, 2013
Source: WEB
Format: MP3
Quality: 320 kbps
Size: 106 mb
Genre: Electronic
Style: Ambient, Downtempo, IDM

Tracklist:
1. We Are The Worst (04:20)
2. Death Set (04:04)
3. Kisses (03:08)
4. 20 Year (03:11)
5. Unto Internity (03:28)
6. Golden Silver (03:43)
7. Legos (For Terry) (24:45)

Sound alchemist Dosh’s albums are generally seamless constructions of fluidly moving swatches of unexpectedly complementary sounds, with frenetic drumming stitched into the lining of beds of playful synths and surprisingly catchy melodies that teeter between quirky and sublime. Keen on collaboration, Dosh often brings other players and vocalists into his webs of sound, extracting the best of what they have to offer to dot his clever tracks with different perspectives. With Milk Money, Dosh’s process seems particularly in focus, and though he can typically get a little busy, there’s a new sense of calm at the core of these tunes. Opening with “We Are the Worst,” Milk Money seems built primarily on a foundation of colorful keyboard sounds, making room for passages of clattering drums and chopped up vocal samples. Throughout the album, the compositions have a driving sense of wonder, like the most optimistic Phillip Glass pieces; they’re even more in line with the child-like wonderment of Nobukazu Takemura. The chiming bell sounds and swooning electronic pads of “Kisses” are propelled by a sturdy beat, finding a territory of happy, hazy nostalgic memories not unlike the best work of contemporaries like Shigeto or Four Tet. The most curious piece on the album and one of its most successful, is the 25- minute album closer “Legos (For Terry).” This epic closing note was originally commissioned for a live performance with Wilco’s Glenn Kotche, and the recorded form wanders in slow motion from a spare electric piano form into a myriad of musical spaces and emotional landscapes. Low in the mix, sputtering multi-tracked drums meet up with more choral vocal fragments, eventually growing into a nightmarish ambient blur on par with Tim Hecker’s fluttering darkness before riding the waves of distortion into a patient repetition of marimba, processed vocals, and swirling electronics. By the end, the dizzying and beautiful piece expresses the fury and unpredictability of life while maintaining a zen-like calm at its core, finding clarity just as easily as it rises to chaos.

After emerging with several EPs on a collection of obscure Italian and Canadian labels, including the enigmatic Gang Of Ducks, the Turin-based producer Daniele Mana returns with the Sweet Sixteen album on London’s Astro:Dynamics. Mastered by Young Echo’s Vessel, with whom Mana shares some sonic qualities, Sweet Sixteen is an album influenced by krautrock and Italian psychedelia are said to influence its production, which displays the same kind of impressionistic rhythm and synth splashes as the best Actress material, albeit with a much woozier character.
