When MONO began in 1999, they set out with a simple mission: From bliss to bludgeon, no matter how long or winding the path may be. Their debut album, Under The Pipal Tree, outlined that mission in twisted, psychedelic fury. Subsequent albums would see the band honing their craft, mastering their mission, and ultimately abandoning that path in favor of more grandiose pursuits. Flanked by increasingly larger orchestras, MONO performed live at some of the most prestigious venues in New York City, London, Tokyo, and Australia. MONO had become an orchestral rock band, a spectacle of extreme melancholy and melodrama. On 2012’s For My Parents, the band had finally reached the logical conclusion of that era; it was time to remember where they started, and to rethink where they were heading. Less strings? No strings? Louder?Quieter? Lighter? Darker? Yes.

The Last Dawn and Rays of Darkness are a pair of new albums by MONO. Recorded simultaneously yet conceptually and creatively disparate, the two act as both opposing and complementary sides to a story. No strangers to narratives, the two albums explore familiar themes for the band: Hope and hopelessness, love and loss, immense joy and unspeakable pain. Those elemental parts of life and the complicated relationships they create have never been more resonant through MONO’s music than they are here.

The Last Dawn is the first of these two companion albums, and is the “lighter” of the two, thematically and melodically. It contains undoubtedly some of MONO’s strongest songs ever, drawing on an array of influences from minimalist film score to vintage shoegaze. It is MONO at their absolute purest, executing an uncanny, unspoken dialogue with each other without the dozens of stringed instruments that have been so prominent throughout their catalog. The songs are also noticeably more efficient – there hasn’t been a MONO full-length record to fit on a single slab of vinyl since 2003’s One Step More And You Die – and the album benefits immeasurably from this streamlined approach. MONO have always been masters of telling compelling stories without words. But now they’ve proven they can do it without frills, too.

Rays of Darkness is the first MONO album in 15 years to feature no orchestral instruments whatsoever. That fact alone is remarkable given the band’s reputation for sweeping, dramatic instrumentals that recall Oscar-worthy film scores. Instead, Rays of Darkness more closely resembles a jet engine taking off inside a small, crowded auditorium. It is MONO’s blackest album ever, a collection of scorched riffs, doom rhythms, and an unexpected contribution from post-hardcore pioneer Tetsu Fukagawa of Envy. The album ends with the smoldering wreckage of distorted guitars and ominous drones playing out a eulogy to the days when MONO shot blinding rays of light through seemingly endless darkness.

Fundamental Records presents ‘100 tears’ a brand new album from DMX Krew.

This is a one off exclusive Bleep edition of 100 copies pressed on deluxe double white vinyl and housed inside a metallic cardboard jacket screen printed by hand by designer Alek Stark. Below are a few words from Ed DMX about the making of the album.

These are nearly all tracks that were written at the end of 2013 and the beginning of 2014 when I was in the process of moving house, which meant I couldn’t have my studio set up.

Instead I made these tracks using one or two synths and one drum machine, recording into a laptop without a mixing desk. I guess this is the way a lot of people make music but it’s new to me. Having the restriction of only a few pieces of equipment on each track helped me to focus on musical ideas. When I felt too restricted by the machines in use, I would put a couple away and get a couple of different ones out of storage.

So the whole thing has a slightly different production vibe than some of my stuff, and a slightly different thought process, but the inspiration is the same: science fact and fiction mixed with the emotions of daily life.

The work of Viennese artist Patricia Enigl, Quantum Oscillations draws on a range of influences from electro-acoustic and dark ambient to minimal techno. It results in a work that is both daring and demanding, but despite its many influences, also cohesive. From the eerie, layered textures of “Ground State” and the menacing, enveloping soundscapes of “Entanglement” through the death march drums and shadowy moods on “Magnetic Monopole” and the chilling effects and broken beats of “Vacuum Fluctuations”, Enigl is clearly comfortable working away from the confines of the dance floor. At the same time, she is also able to bring that unpredictable, twitchy sensibility to techno arranging, most impressively on the detuned, cold bleeps of “Microstate”.

Mexican Techno artist Emmerichk first discovered the world of electronic music at a very early age: His father was a great fan of electronic sounds and the young Emmerichk was introduced to the sounds of legendary German group ‘Kraftwerk’ and also heard music from Japan’s pioneering electronic / space music composer ‘Isao Tomita’.

At the age of 14 he had access to a sound studio and learned how to use mixers, drum machines and synthesizers and gradually began to create his own electronic music. He embraced the rise of the modern electronic scene in Mexico and in turn he made contact with many other artists that had similar interests and music styles. Together, they worked with their music and ideas and found adequate means to publish their music.

The final result being ‘Late Nineties’ – A tribute to the Techno artists who have laid the path in electronic music history. This is Emmerichk’s “vision” of Techno. A fusion of digital and analog machines, deep and dark sounds resulting in diverse parallel layers of sound.

Precarious bon vivants, gifted musicians, radical guys VON SPAR are many things, but above all, they are one of the most amazing bands in the realms that the British music press once baptized as Krautrock. Sebastian Blume, Jan Philipp Janzen, Christopher Marquez and Phillip Tielsch have in past been praised even more than the revenants of the genre (in 2012, together with Stephen Malkmus, before the watering eyes of CAN founding members Irmin Schmidt and Jaki Liebezeit, they provided a reinterpretation of the album “Ege Bamyasi” at the Cologne Weekend Festival) even if the four were inspired equally by techno, synthpop, noise, post-punk and new music. “The concept of the collective VON SPAR seems to be to torpedo listeners’ expectations from album to album,” wrote the German newspaper TAZ about their last album “Foreigner”. And once again, much is new on “Streetlife”. Four of the eight pieces were recorded with the Canadian singer Chris Cummings, aka Marker Starling (formerly Mantler), whose fragile voice at moments recalls that of the great communist and musician Robert Wyatt. Other pieces feature the voice of Ada (Pampa Records) and of Scout Niblett (Drag City), for whom Jan Philipp Janzen has played drums on various tours (as he has for the likes of Owen Pallett and The Field). “Streetlife” has emerged as a heterogeneous album ranging from melodic piano disco (“Chain Of Command”), to tripped out soundscapes (“Hearts Fear”), to grandiose soft rock (“Try Though We Might”). One might call it music for a better world, if that didn’t sound so lofty. Yet VON SPAR are not at all lofty, they are wide awake. This is not escapism, but life in the streets. And that’s how they live it.

Of course, there’s a story behind every release, and this LigovskoÏ debut on DEMENT3D goes back to one of their first live performances in Paris, back in 2011, organized by our “cousin” label Silicate : a group of artists – including DSCRD – were invited to recompose an ambient soundtrack on the movie Outland by Peter Hyams. Ligovskoï ’s live performance was absolute magic, and their intense and powerful sound signature – with moving infra-thin melodies, ethereal noises, and deep bass foundations – was already sounding perfect.

Ligovskoï, aka Nikolaï Azonov and Valerio Selig, started as a drone / ambient / experimental project in 2010. Their previous musical activities had in fact crossed our paths many times before, either at concerts where Nikolaï was performing behind the synths, or projects Valerio was presenting at Beaux-Arts de Cergy, the art school where a couple of seminal techno parties happened, orchestrated by one of Polar Inertia’s members…

Welcoming the young duo in our label’s shelf had become obvious : their tracks have very often found their way in our DJ sets, their live performances were featured in our label nights, and we even organized some more small private experimental concerts to introduce their music to our public. We felt Ligovskoï was gradually becoming more and more inspirational among a range of local and international artists, and it seemed relevant to have their rich and stirring music remixed by artists from label affiliates and other artists that we love.

So, we asked In Aeternam Vale, French synth / punk / electronic pioneer : after being blown away by some of the re-issues on Minimal Wave, and meeting him in person early 2013 at one of his rare Parisian live appearances, he delivered a hybrid reinterpretation of the track G.Y. Soon after, we asked Abdulla Rashim – who had already delivered an amazing reinterpretation of Polar Inertia’s Black Sun – to deliver some of his static magic on Labiate, resulting in a beautiful, horizontal and immersive piece.
Last but not least, on D-side of this double-EP release, both label’s co-founders, Francois X and Heartbeat each teamed up with their Parisian mates : Antigone and Voiski to execute techno versions of Ligovskoï ’s wizardry. Antigone &
Francois X‘ s remix of the EP’s title track : Dilip is a mental and driving groove that merges perfectly both of their signatures, while Voiski & Heartbeat deliver a slow-tempo and powerful live take on Goha – illustrating one of the many aspects of their live project together : HBTVSK.

This release is very diverse, conveys strong emotions and states some radical aesthetics, we hope you’ll enjoy it as much as we do.
