Kim Hiorthøy – Dogs

Label/Catalog#: Smalltown Supersound / STS206DX

Size: 80 MB
Genre: Electronic

11 Wrong

On his previous output, Kim Hiorthøy has mixed everything from folk, free-jazz, lo-fi electronics, acid, instrumental hip-hop and field recordings. On his third full-length album, Dogs, out September 23rd via Smalltown Supersound, Hiorthøy has stripped everything down to a minimum, and gone to the core of his characteristic sound. The album consists of mostly just piano and ambience with some beats, and on some tracks the occasional synth. Dogs is his purest and most beautiful album. Hiorthøy cites Jan Johansson as an inspiration, but says the music is still anchored in early hip-hop, sample-based music (though there are no samples on Dogs), and even the simple, cheesy melodies of some 90s rave tracks. That said, Dogs probably owes just as much to the roots of ambient music — the minimalist beauty of Harold Budd or even Eric Satie.
Extraordinarily talented and expressive, Hiorthøy operates in many different fields in addition to music. A monograph of his graphic design work, Tree Weekend, was published by Die Gestalten Verlag in 2001. Since then, he has designed countless record covers for Smalltown Supersound and Rune Grammofon, as well as posters, books and book jackets. He is also a visual artist (check out www.standardoslo.no for more information about his art) and has worked as a cinematographer for documentaries and feature films. In addition to his albums, singles and EPs, Hiorthøy has written music for contemporary dance work in Sweden, Denmark and Belgium.

Boothroyd – Idle Hours

CS2569315-02A-BIG

Label/Cat#: Tri Angle – TRIANGLE 28D
Year: 26 September, 2014
Source: WEB
Format: mp3
Quality: 320 kbps
Size: 41 MB
Genre: Electronic
Style: Experimental

Tracklist:
1. NYC (5:13)
2. Skinned (3:54)
3. Colony (4:04)
4. Y5 (4:53)

It’s a debut release yet again for the ever-exploring Tri Angle outfit, this time signing up Boothroyd after a seemingly expectant public (or perhaps media) has been flitting around the artist since he surfaced on mixtapes from the likes of Visionist and Forest Swords. His is a sound that fits comfortably on Tri Angle, dealing as it does in sometimes beguiling, sometimes nauseating sound design and non-conformist track structures. “Skinned” is particularly powerful with its Terminator-esque drones and richly detailed layers of rhythmic and arrhythmic noise, while “Colony” deals in a more spacious but equally immersive sound world populated by alien drone sweeps and atmospheric shudders. It’s a bold start for an artist that could prove to be a potent force in the murky world of noise-based artists.

Kevin Drumm – Trouble

Source: WEB
Format: mp3
Quality: 320 kbps
Size: 123 MB
Genre: Electronic

Tracklist:
1. Trouble (54:00)

‘Trouble’ is the brand new dispatch from the assorted output of Kevin Drumm and sits as one of the quietest in his entire catalogue. A single continuous 54 minute excursion into the netherworld of the audio spectrum, ‘Trouble’ is neither ambient nor drone but a more complex investigation into the deep recesses of sound. One which discreetly works itself into the mind of a listener willing to invest in the path laid out in this extremely subtle, beautiful and exceptional release.

11. Fruit Is Ripe (2:16)
12. Fire Ends The Day (3:34)

Festival Of The Dead is the new full-length studio album from William Bennett’s Cut Hands, due to be released by Blackest Ever Black on 2xLP, CD and digital formats on October 13th, 2014

This is Cut Hands’ third album to date: the acclaimed Afro Noise I introduced the project in 2011, and 2012’s Black Mamba expanded its feverish vision, preceded by a single of the same name on Blackest Ever Black. 2013 saw the release of the similarly fiery ‘Madwoman’ and ‘Damballah 58′ 12″s (on Downwards and BEB respectively)

Festival of The Dead is without doubt the most potent distillation yet of Cut Hands’ malign percussive energy, with pieces like ‘The Claw’ and ‘Vaudou Take Me High’ leading the irresistible polyrhythmic assault, in pursuit of one thing: a final rapturous celebration of oblivion

Tracklist:
1. Naked Land (26:12)

3. Colonialists (10:03)
4. Quake (14:55)

After a three year absence, the collaborative project of Ilpo Vaisanen and Dirk Dresselhaus (better known as Schneider TM) yields a new album for their regular haunt Editions Mego, and it’s a subtle beast that rewards patient and attentive ears. “Naked Land” growls and prowls over 26 minutes of mutant groans and drones fizzing with acoustic energy, while “Monolake” brings proceedings down to a more tense, restrained level of disturbing noise. “Colonialists” takes the high-frequency road with a multitude of nerve-jangling soundwaves merging into one slow-release cacophony, and “Quake” finishes off with some grungy distortion reaching towards a twisted kind of musicality.

Torn Hawk – Let’s Cry & Do Pushups At The Same Time

1412605768_cover

Label: Mexican Summer
Release date: 2014
Source: WEB
Format: mp3
Quality: 320 kbps
Size: 100 MB
Genre: Electronic
Style: Experimental, Downtempo

Tracklist:
01. I’m Flexible
02. She Happens
03. Afterprom
04. Return to The Pec Deck
05. Acceptance Speech
06. Because of M.A.S.K.
07. Under Wolf Rule
08. There Was a Time

Torn Hawk is the audio project of producer and video artist Luke Wyatt. Over the past couple of years, Wyatt has unfurled a serial tapestry of content arguing for a reconciliation of aesthetic irony with compositional sincerity and emotional vulnerability. Let’s Cry And Do Pushups At The Same Time is Wyatt’s most recent full-length statement as Torn Hawk, and marks the onset of a more emotionally manipulative and sonically confident direction.

It’s difficult to neatly categorize Wyatt’s genre-refracting productions, which formerly have found a home on L.I.E.S., Not Not Fun, Rush Hour’s “No Label”, 1080p, and several other labels, including his own imprint Valcrond Video. The nuts & bolts of Let’s Cry’s eight tracks are built from live guitar, drum machines, junky synths, and layers of acid-washed samples. Wyatt smears the disparate elements of each track into a cohesive whole that transcends the (banality) (thrift-store dustiness) of each: the result is a series of heart-tuggingly confessional watercolors, framed with cinderblocks and distressed leather.

In the foreground of each track, Wyatt’s guitar moves between the shag carpet meditations of Manuel Göttsching, the digital delay jangle-grid of The Chameleons, the sunstroke saturation of Medicine, and the modal wankery of Tom Verlaine. Throw in the unabashed melodrama of something a sax might do on a Don Henley hit, and you get a better idea of Torn Hawk’s sensibility.

Movies and television also leave an undeniable impression on this album, which should come as no surprise to anyone who has followed Wyatt’s parallel video efforts, which he calls “Video Mulch”. The influence of film scores comes through in the inspirational mood cues of tracks like “Afterprom”, which presents a bouquet of guitar scrawls wrapped in a black garbage bag, and “Because of M.A.S.K.”, which would sit perfectly over the end credits of a rom-com set within the subculture of identity theft.

Elsewhere, “She Happens” takes the precarious tenderness of a brand new love affair and holds it over the edge of an audio cliff by the scruff of its neck; “Acceptance Speech” evokes the feel-good podium glow of awards-show public masturbation; and “Under Wolf Rule” balances threat with inspirational thrust: it’s the ideal soundtrack to decapitate to, and then thoughtfully consider the floral arrangements that are to be placed around the heads. Closing out the album, “There Was A Time” hovers in the strip mall of emotions between the storefronts of regret and expectation, expertly evoking the temporal hang-ups that feed or defeat our day-to-day happiness.

As its title suggests, Let’s Cry grapples with the duality of internal conflict and persona construction. It’s a theme that also ties in with Wyatt’s aesthetic interest in “parodying toughness”. In his visual presentation, Wyatt often presents a South Florida machismo in tandem with a vulnerable, self-help softness. It’s this kind of playfully sincere doubling that Wyatt thrives on; he is committed to making music that pumps you up and tugs at your heart stuff – he is making music for you to work out and weep to.

Let’s Cry And Do Pushups At The Same Time will be released November 10 (UK/EU) and November 11 (US) on LP, CD and digital formats.

Andy Stott – Faith in Strangers

andy-stott-cover_Image

Artist: Andy Stott
Title Of Album: Faith in Strangers
Year Of Release: 2014
Label: Modern Love / LOVE098
Genre: Experimental, Techno, Ambient, Electronic
Quality: MP3
Bitrate: 320 kbps
Total Time: 00:53:55
Total Size: 123 mb

Tracklist:
01. Time Away
02. Violence
03. On Oath
04. Science & Industry
05. No Surrender
06. How It Was
07. Damage
08. Faith in Strangers
09. Missing

‘Faith In Strangers’ was written and produced between January 2013 and June 2014, and was edited and sequenced in late July this year. Making use of on an array of instruments, field recordings, found sounds and vocal treatments, it’s a largely analogue variant of hi-tech production styles arcing from the dissonant to the sublime. The first two tracks recorded during these early sessions bookend the release, the opener ‘Time Away’ featuring Euphonium played by Kim Holly Thorpe and last track ‘Missing’ a contribution by Stott’s occasional vocal collaborator Alison Skidmore who also appeared on 2012’s ‘Luxury Problems’. Between these two points ‘Faith In Strangers’ heads off from the sparse and infected ‘Violence’ to the broken, downcast pop of ‘On Oath’ and the motorik, driving melancholy of ‘Science & Industry’ – three vocal tracks built around that angular production style that imbues proceedings with both a pioneering spirit and a resonating sense of familiarity. Things take a sharp turn with ‘No Surrender’- a sparkling analogue jam making way for a tough, smudged rhythmic assault, while ‘How It Was’ refracts sweaty Warehouse signatures and ‘Damage’ finds the sweet spot between RZA’s classic ‘Ghost Dog’ and Terror Danjah at his most brutal. ‘Faith in Strangers’ is next and offers perhaps the most beautiful and open track here, its vocal hook and chiming melody bound to the rest of the album via the almost inaudible hum of Stott’s mixing desk. It provides a haze of warmth and nostalgia that ties the nine loose joints that make up the LP into the most memorable and oddly cohesive of Stott’s career to date, built and rendered in the spirit of those rare albums that straddle innovation and tradition through darkness and light.
