Chemotex – Snake Inside My Leg
Label/Catalog#: The Trilogy Tapes – TT027

Format: mp3

Genre: Electronic
Style: Techno, Experiemntal
Tracklist:
A. Snake Inside My Leg (10:30)
B. Yang Solution (11:33)
The latest slice of firepower from The Trilogy Tapes features the return of Chemotex, also known as L.I.E.S affiliate Marcos Cabral. There are no punches being pulled on this two-tracker, especially with the wrecking ball techno destruction of the title track. Swinging on a rusty hinge of a groove, the track charges ahead even though it could liable fall apart at any minute with the rusty nuts and bolts holding it together. “Yang Solution” is even more disheveled; ditching traditional percussion in favour of vaporous hisses and snarls to spell out the rough and ready rhythm of the track. Look out for the screen printed inner sleeve too!

Gunnar Haslam returns to LIES records for his second album, Mirrors and Copulation. Following a slew of 12″ releases this year, Gunnar delves deep into his darkest palettes for a return to his patient, haunted soundscapes that shrouded his debut LP, Mimesiak.Across eight tracks of ambient techno both brooding and tumultuous, Gunnar Haslam unravels a narrative on overpopulation and its potential environmental ramifications inspired by the Borges quote the album title references. “Meter By Me, Sybil” cascades arpeggios through a thick fog that never leaves Mirrors. “Ajapajapam Version” cuts through with a sluggish 3/4 strut and nauseated 303 bassline, but the rest of the A side is fully enveloped by the Gunnar’s peerless recreation of the wet ambience of a ghostly rainforest.
“Cloud Castle Lake” offers an uptempo cut buoyed by a blasted kick drum and frenetic 606 workout. Still enshrouded, “Cloud Castle Lake” further explores Gunnar’s sonic terrain with the force of a freaked dancefloor’s momentum, much like the album finale, “In Argo Teurano”, which blasts forth from the mist with a weathered adventurer’s grit.
Mirrors and Copulation continues Gunnar Haslam’s pursuit of the subterranean and introverted techno first offered on his LIES debut, embarking on more mystic pastures with his final offering of 2014.

Flower & Water began with an offer to work with the first Dragon’s Eye release – a flexi-disc with a recording of George Winston playing a blues piano composition called “Medley: Bread Baker’s Stomp” – as source material. Since I am not a true remixer, I decided to modify the track via physical manipulation.
Most of the material began with cutting up some of the flexi’s and taping back together in ‘wrong’ ways. I then played (or tried to play) the broken records that had been taped back together, and also putting objects onto the surface of the record while being played with a cheap record player that had a small built-in speaker. In many ways I felt like I was building a series of temporary sculptures, as I wanted the experience to be physical – similar to the use of hands in making bread from scratch. Based on Paul Novak’s bread making book, I felt I should approach my engagement with the flexi’s should feel a bit like a ritual. I then took the stereo recordings of the objects, and put different moments into a sampler so that I could shift pitches and create loops. In many ways the experience of cutting the records into pieces, felt related to my own practice, in that my approach to these recordings were quite different than how i’ve worked before – particularly with the addition of such an arduous process of physical building, rather than building the recordings in my “studio”. What is beautiful is that the recordings (done with a small stereo field recorder), captured not only the sounds of the record player, the plastic cups, the stones, and other things I set on the turntable, those sounds were processed by the reverb and echo that naturally exists in the space. So, rather than working within a virtual environment, I tried to keep the experiences as analog activities – with dust and hands, with scissors and scotch tape, and with the ways that sound is activated via dropping, sliding, and of course, listening. My hope was that the messiness of my process might offer some sound pieces that might relate to how a kitchen might look when I might have finished baking bread… with hands covered in flour, with dough stuck to the counter, etc. in many ways the overall group of tracks is a kind of hybrid – with agitated acoustic actions and piano recordings that have become loose and repetitive. The titles were all taken from Paul Novak’s book – A Baker’s Dozen of Daily Breads and More, some were as found, while others a bit more playful – such as wing / ogre / stone which was made up of the letters of George Winton’s name.

Sean Byrne’s Bugskull project returned in 2009 after a long hiatus with the Digitalis-released “Communication.” A few years later they released the acoustic curveball, “Strange Mountain,” on legendary Inland Empire label, Shrimper. We’re very happy that the proper follow-up to “Communication” has landed on the Digitalis shores again.“Collapsed View” is a whimsical summer excursion through jaded forests and crystalline tides. On the plucked acoustic opener, “Heaven/California,” you’re gently dropped into Byrne’s hazy lair. The repetitive main dirge moves like molasses until you’re appropriately comatose. It’s a dizzying beginning that settles nicely into the bass crunch of “Olde Growth.” Forward movement in the form of a canned ramshackle beat underlines the drawn out leads that appear to floating in a puff of smoke. “Icarus Rising” steals the show with it’s jet propulsion bass line and psych-infused guitar leads. It’s an intoxicating combination that gets better with repeated listens.
Byrne breaks out all the stops on “Collapsed View,” mutating gamelan-esque electronics into an oceanside romp on “Druids.” Hypnotic guitar swells wrap around the piece, elevating it onto a different plane. It begins the second side which, compared to the A-Side, is a meditative ambient affair. Saxophone lamentations puncuate the title track drawing a circle around a star-filled night in the middle of nowhere. There’s an aimless feeling to the piece but in a good way so that you feel weightless as you listen.

1. part 1 live (22:06)

Frank Bretschneider is a musician, composer and video artist in Berlin. His work is known for precise sound placement, complex, interwoven rhythm structures and its minimal, flowing approach. Bretschneider’s subtle and detailed music is echoed by his visuals: perfect translated realizations of the qualities found in music within visual phenomena.Bretschneider (1956) was raised in Karl-Marx-Stadt (Chemnitz since 1990), where his aesthetic developed as he listened to pirate radio and smuggled Beastie Boys tapes in the former East Germany. After studying fine arts and inspired by science fiction radio plays and films he began experimenting with tape machines, synthesizers, and modified guitars in 1984, as well as exploring the possibilities of exchange between visual art and music by various means such as film, video and computer graphics.
In 1986, after establishing his cassette label klangFarBe, Bretschneider founded AG Geige, a successful and influential East German underground band. Though limited to the East before the wall came down, they were invited to perform across Germany and internationally after 1989 and released three albums before splitting in 1993.
In 1995, Bretschneider and fellow AG Geige member Olaf Bender founded the Rastermusic record label which eventually merged with Carsten Nicolai’s noton to form raster-noton in 1999.Steve Roden is a visual and sound artist from Los Angeles, living in Pasadena. His work includes painting, drawing, sculpture, film/video, sound installation, text and performance. Roden’s working process uses various forms of specific notation (words, musical scores, maps, etc.) and translates them through self-invented systems into scores, which then influence the process of painting, drawing, sculpture, and composition. These scores, rigid in terms of their parameters and rules, are also full of holes for intuitive decisions, failures and left turns.
The inspirational source material becomes a kind of formal skeleton that the abstract finished works are built upon. In the visual works, translations of information such as text and maps, become rules and systems for generating visual actions such as color choices, number of elements, amounts of time and form building. In the sound works, singular source materials such as objects, architectural spaces, and field recordings, are abstracted through humble electronic processes to create new audio spaces, or possible landscapes. The sound works present themselves with an aesthetic Roden has described as lower case —sound concerned with subtlety and the quiet activity of listening.

Following the frenetic, rhythmic experiments of the Ripatti 12” series, Vladislav Delay returns with his first ambient album in over a decade. ‘Visa’ is a thing of immense, absorbing beauty – harking back to his classic albums for Chain reaction and Mille Plateaux, extending 6 longform pieces over an hour of heady dub reductions. And in the fine tradition of some of the best albums, ‘Visa’ was borne out of serendipity – Ripatti was denied entry to the United States and was forced to cancel an entire tour. Suddenly left with unhindered time and a surplus of creative energy, he produced this material in a span of just two weeks. As he explains: “a valve broke open… and I collected what came out the pipes.” ‘Visa’ is complex yet immersive – never fading into the background, instead building layered soundscapes that shift and build before switching direction, changing focus. It’s a technique that Ripatti has crafted and honed over the years – almost 20 years in fact since his shocking ‘The Kind Of Blue’ debut for his own Huume imprint, and here once again subtly augmented via industrial noises and dream-like melodic loops. Made almost entirely with analog hardware, the album was designed to be listened to at high volume and in full detail – and is perhaps the most substantial and rewarding Delay release since ‘Demo(n) Tracks’ over a decade ago…

Ukkonen – Change Time

Following the critically acclaimed LP’s “The Isolated Rhythms of…” (on Uncharted) and “The Ancient Tonalities of…” (on No Pain In Pop) and the EP’s “Erriapo”, “Spatia” and “Aika”, the mysterious Arctic producer known only as Ukkonen delivers his latest set of stunners. His credentials are clear, even if his origins aren’t – apparently a background steeped in classical composition in a remote area of Finland and ‘pretty much zero interest in dance music’ somehow led to all this; confounding expectations from critics worldwide, who have compared his unique non-linear grooves to the likes of Gas, The Sight Below, Mark E, Aphex Twin, Brian Eno, Carl Craig, Mika Vainio and Isolee; as well as gaining DJ support from the likes of Agoria, Ame, Colin Dale, Norman Nodge, Terry Mitchell and Vince Watson. Invited to remix Patten before the latter signed to Warp, heads were also turned by a slew of mixes that went far beyond the average DJ set, where he ‘Ukkonised’ classic Detroit techno tracks, re-editing them into his trademark off-kilter time signatures whilst somehow retaining all the original soul and groove. Returning to his original home for this EP, it represents yet another left turn on the Ukkonen musical path. The man himself says: ‘once again I want to change direction a little, whilst still keeping all the things I love in there – the polyrhythms, phasing loops, ambiguous timings and so on’, however this set sees the tempo looser than before. We’re not sure if “post techno” actually ever happened, but maybe “post discotronica” is, er, in the post. Anyway, we liked the tracks so much that we once again went the extra mile with the physical product – a clear and white splatter effect thing of beauty, cut to 10″ size in a 12″ pressing. Praise for Ukkonen: “Masterfully deep house music” Bleep “Stylish and understated” Trebuchet “A cushioned and indistinct microcosm” Connexion Bizarre “Excellent… wonderful… highly recommended” Norman “Quite unlike anything you can really place your finger on” Boomkat “Hypnotism and polyrhythm to delight the most discerning ears” DJ Mag…

Mordant Music surpass themselves again with this unearthed, alien gem by library composer Donald Fraser and British folk band, Steeleye Span, recorded in 1975. The 15 minute ‘Locomotion’ is a real ace, locked into a tunnel of glue-huffing krautrock groove suffused with the fumes of psychedelic folk and ritual drums. MM’s DLR remix squashes the thing to a demented acid church-hall bogle sparked up with gremlin voices and mutant electronics beside a eerily detached, barely-there Ghost Train Version left to roil in the murk. Or, as MM put it: “Radiophonic folk in continual accelerando for Geoffrey Jones via the Stockton & Darlington Railway composed by station master Donald Fraser & performed by members of Steeleye Span…teased from ’75 state-of-the-art electronics & pulsing like a possessed Mallard…MM buffer a headphone reMMix on the DLR & Donald Fraser ghosts a version into the sidings…ticket pleads…IBM”

Concept albums are a rare species. They seem to have a tendency to show up late on revered artists timelines. Post teenage angst and the sheer unlimited energy of the early stages of the human condition, they convey a strategy that’s often been shaped by matured ideas coming together over the years. It is seldom that these are debut records. Gajek’s compositions however have grown quietly under the radar, heard only by those in his inner circle. In a way this is not a debut – as this music has ripened over the course of many years. But whilst his visual oeuvre has been out there for a while, accompanying the music of Warp’s Clark, Gajeks own audio is only now seeing the light of the public. After Chris Clark had passed some of Gajeks sheer endless output over to Modeselektor, quite a few listening sessions followed. Ranging from post-rocky electronica to complex and moody renderings of intricate introverted beat structures to a mutant dance music, a whole audioscape had to be discovered. There were songs and tracks and experiments there, morphed vocals and reverberated non human instruments, complex percussion patterns and sweet athmospheres, but in all these different paths and moods, a penchant for working with a leitmotif could be traced.
As an introduction to expose his particular working method, a concept mini-album was carefully crafted. Filled with 21 short tracks circling around 3 main motifs this record lays bare one of Monkeytown’s new artists main strenghts. The creation of a soundscape that explores a notion of something athmospheric hidden away under the material of the zeitgeist. Working with variations of rythmic elements it seems like the 3 parts of this album tell very short but intricately entwined stories equal to the miniature worlds contained in snow globes. They contain references to their larger musical counterparts in Gajeks other works, but shaken and stirred and sometimes snowed under. One is quickly drawn into this music, challenged to find the thread and follow it into its different outfits and scenarios.
The first complex entitled „Curved Engines“ evolves around a major scale played over two octaves with the exclusion of a few notes. Its friendly and simple melody is examined in every possible direction almost like a classical minimalist piano piece. The second one „Restless Water Shapes“ explores a repetitive rythmic pattern, which is evolving over the course of its 8 parts, sometimes reminiscent of early Autechre, but combined with a more jazz based approach. On its course, the pattern morphs from being played on actual percussions, to drony pads and sirens synthesized from vocals until it breaks into actual composed pieces on track 9, 12 and 14. Here, various of the afore-heard elements come together and form moments of extreme beauty and calmness while challenging the listener to come closer, hear more, better, finer.
Complex 3 „Moving Glasses“ starts like an overture to a digital „Zarathrustra“. Synthezised arpeggios sounding like a muted bamboo – harpsichord are interrupted by a syncopated beat swinging in an upside down gesture like an exclamation mark. Some of the elements of the former complexes appear, culminating in a more orchestrated apparel. Where the other parts explore a musical structure this one is devoted to (a) form. This form could be called „electronic dance music“, if this expression wasnt already taken for the cheap mainstream rendering of autotuned four to the floor. In a different speak one could also say „almost techno“. „Moving Glasses“ offers the most apparent references to club – music in its various forms ranging from hip hop to techno but also finding its way back to ambient and electronica.
You can consume this album without paying attention to the „concept“ part of it, no worries, it is a masterfully crafted piece of intelligent electronica that is as pleasant to listen to, as it is thought though. But you can also dig deep and let yourself be amazed by the mindgames of this young producer, who is by the way also just gaining his „Meisterschüler“ in the visual arts. His idiosyncratic mastery of music however was obtained autodidactically. And that makes the beauty of it.”

December – In Advance Of The Broken Arm
*A new sublabel from Blackest Ever Black, edition of 300 copies for the world* Blackest Ever Black initiate the ‘floor-stalking Original Street Techno series with two original joints by December. As previewed on the label’s Berlin Community Radio show, they reveal a fine mixture of gothic lust and louche contempt for the ‘floor: ‘In Advance Of The Broken Arm’ hems to the shadows with suggestive, half-heard mutters and the silhouettes of writhing, druggy rhythms illuminated by flashes of Carpenter-style synth and splashed with salty guitar distortion; the flipside turns to a darker corner of the club with ‘Collapse’, playing out a darkroom drama of Giallo-esque synth-organ motifs and a lugubrious, knackered pound somewhere between Nate Young and Raime. Definitely one for the club creeps – you know who you are.

Uwe Schmidt is one of the most prolific contemporary electronic musicians of our era, with over 200 releases produced under a dizzying array of aliases. Perhaps his most well known and celebrated project is Señor Coconut, of “Cha cha cha” Kraftwerk cover fame. We’ve heard many dozens of Uwe’s releases and consider more than a few of them to be Bunker classics that are in constant rotation at both our house and on our dancefloor.
When we first heard his compilation of tunes organized as a satirical history of acid house released under the Atom™ moniker – “Acid Evolution 1988-2003”, we started hounding Uwe about performing this material live at The Bunker. We eventually got him to perform an improvised live hardware set with Tobias, then were lucky enough to have him perform his A/V set for us, and most recently were treated to a solo techno set of the Ground Loop material just last year.
We asked Uwe to flesh out a few of the clips he’d put online of Ground Loop material with a view to releasing a record for The Bunker and two days later these two monsters landed in our inbox. Two brand new Atom™ dancefloor acid explosions that stand alongside the best of his work. Enjoy!

If there was a Top Of The Pops for DIY electronics, then St Leidal the 2nd‘s slice of sun-kissed exotica heaven would probably be number one for months to come. Up and coming Hungarian producer, András Leidal had explored practically everything between shoegaze and acid before starting his solo project, St Leidal the 2nd in 2009 – he is part of Wedding Acid Group’s trio, whose anthology was released on Farbwechsel this past spring.Following a couple of self-released EPs and a refined release on 8ounce records, Future Tiberian Baths is András’s most accomplished work to date. Similarly to St Leidal’s previous works, it is a collection of sample laden, beat driven songs that sound like listening to an octopus jamming to a sleazy 80s teenage movie theme from the inside of an aquarium. These eight originals are all built from an almost transparent fabric that melts both your mind and your body, recalling the best moments of vaporwave. What makes St Leidal the 2nd stand out though is his effortless, almost minimalistic approach that lets him fuse hopeful melancholy and nostalgia with an array of influences with suave ease and confidence.

about
Amen Tma is a project of ::.: and acidmilk. Spiritually a successor to Angakkut, but musically a completely different entity, it was conceived in late 2011 for the purpose of experimentation with combining composition techniques of electroacoustic music, balinese gamelan and polymetric techno.
Spanning nearly three years of work, their debut album Insect Phonetics Research yields a study in sibilant stridulation sounds, interwoven with messages preaching an ever approaching Eschaton. This material is complete with a bonus live recording alongside remixes by Sion Orgon, Loyu, Drakh, Makkatu, Rentip, &apos, RBNX and Urbanfailure, resulting in a total 90 minutes of music.
