Tracks from The Field’s album Cupid’s Head are remixed by a varied cast of electronic music’s finest talents. Bookending the release are two incredible takes from Wolfgang Voigt’s Gas project, an immersive and atmospheric whirlpool to open the release, and a stilled ‘ambient’ version to close the release, frozen swirls of sound drawing the listener under. Tim Hecker gives a characteristically delicate and emotive interpretation of ‘No. No?’ while Vatican Shadow adds dark clatters to ‘Cupid’s Head’. Barker & Baumecker strip back that same track and let it build with a lean percussive flex, while TM404 submerges the track is icy dub and John Tejada and Sonns provide rich and detailed mixes.

Cititrax presents the full length LP by Brooklyn duo Further Reductions. Shawn O’Sullivan and Katie Rose formed Further Reductions in 2008 as an outlet for their shared passion of electronic dance music. O’Sullivan, known for his recent techno releases as Vapauteen on L.I.E.S., 400PPM on Avian and Civil Duty (with Beau Wanzer of Streetwalker) on The Corner has been quite active lately blurring the lines between techno and noise music. With Further Reductions, O’Sullivan’s rhythmic sensibility is fused with Rose’s pop leanings to create super lush and atmospheric tracks that work both on and off the dance floor. Informed by the sounds of classic techno and early house, they subtly substitute the structure of functional club music with a more primal absorption based in their unique collaboration. Though Matt Karmil seemed to appear out of nowhere last year, his debut album, —-, has the considered approach of a producer with more than just a few releases to his name. In its press release, Karmil explains that, though he’s been making music for years, he had no intention of releasing anything until recently, when it was reportedly coaxed out of him by Kompakt artists Popnoname and Ada.

It’s not hard to see why Karmil’s work resonates with the Kompakt crew. Like many in the Cologne label’s family, the Englishman’s productions are warm, rich and heady, treading the line between Funktion One stacks and home stereos. Grounded in house, the aesthetic across —-‘s eight tracks is hazy but far from lo-fi. Aside from the occasional piano stab, tape hiss and acid squelch, most of the sounds here are unrecognisable. It’s clear that Karmil obsesses over the samples he uses, and the rewards are obvious.

The first of eight tracks is “Open,” a murky six-minute workout that sets the tone for the rest of the album. For the most part, the next 45 minutes see subdued kick drums paired with simple, unobtrusive basslines, both serving as a sturdy platform for Karmil’s collages of moody samples. Like a lot of quality deep house, the emphasis is not on snappy drums or swing, but on atmospherics. Karmil’s deft approach creates some truly immersive moments, and the highlights come when the tracks stretch out. At ten minutes long, “Frankrike (float)” is one of the album’s choice cuts—it’s not much more than a simple loop, where the same short string and keys samples repeat for its duration. In many respects, —- is an example of classic minimalism. But those weary of the tag risk missing out on the warmth of Karmil’s palette, and the unique charm that comes with it.

“We’re more than thrilled to present DAMH, a new project from two familiar faces straight out of the ever-burgeoning neo-romantic dance underground – Cologne staple DAVID HASERT got together with none other than Michaela Dippel aka ADA for two blissed-out slices of melancholic, pop-infused house. Together with winning remixes by Hamburg mastermind DJ KOZE and purveyor of fine looping MATT KARMIL, this is exactly the kind of emotionally invested club music we live and breathe. For some undisclosed reason, DAMH stands for “dog ate my homework”, but this could lead the unsuspecting listener up the garden path – as these cuts sound nothing like the sonic debris remaining after a household-centric accident involving overzealous pets.

If anything, title track BLACK NIGHT is a highly polished affair establishing a carefully gauged balance between its two vocalists – and it does so against the melodic backdrop of an affectionate ballad that nonetheless knows how to maintain its floor momentum. In the meantime, HANSI’s prominent opening sample harks back to Lawrence’s “Teaser”, a true classic from Kompakt’s earlier back catalogue, but draws a slightly different conclusion thanks to its expertly executed strings and magical arrangement. DJ KOZE backs up the package with his remix of BLACK NIGHT, where we see the iconic producer shifting gears for a subtly bouncing downbeat gem – followed by MATT KARMIL’s finely filtered, hypnotic house revamp that once more proves this upcoming artist to be a major force in the growing field of philanthropic psychedelics.

Gesloten Cirkel has become one of techno’s true cult figures since his emergence back in 2009 with a self-titled 12″ for Viewlexx offshoot Murder Capital that explored the strange fringe between techno and electro, with only intermittent releases for David Vunk’s Moustache Techno and Berceuse Heroique and the odd remix since. The paucity of information surrounding Gesloten Cirkel’s identity beyond a given location of Moscow has lead to all manner of unfounded speculation, with the Ratsnake himself merely stating he is “just an out of shape balding dude who sits in an office” to us for his excellent Juno Plus podcast back in 2012.

The feverish reception to Gesloten Cirkel’s memorable Berceuse Heroique debut has seemingly coaxed the producer into a more proactive mindset, with remix commissions for Dekmantel and Permanent Vacation last year complemented by the announcement of a planned second BH release. Whilst High Speed Cruising is yet to surface, news has now arrived that Gesloten Cirkel will pull the Murder Capital label out of dormancy with his debut album Submit X. Due out next month, the ten-track double LP is described quite aptly as “not for the faint-hearted” with initial copies set to be pressed on coloured vinyl – interested parties can check the Clone site for some brief previews.

Just like in the Mahabharata, Kalli & Dharma’s coming together is pure karma, but this time they’re protagonists in a friendly versus, where the listener gets to decide their fate. Fact is, the pair is a powerhouse, so picking a favorite is no picnic.
