“We’re more than thrilled to present DAMH, a new project from two familiar faces straight out of the ever-burgeoning neo-romantic dance underground – Cologne staple DAVID HASERT got together with none other than Michaela Dippel aka ADA for two blissed-out slices of melancholic, pop-infused house. Together with winning remixes by Hamburg mastermind DJ KOZE and purveyor of fine looping MATT KARMIL, this is exactly the kind of emotionally invested club music we live and breathe. For some undisclosed reason, DAMH stands for “dog ate my homework”, but this could lead the unsuspecting listener up the garden path – as these cuts sound nothing like the sonic debris remaining after a household-centric accident involving overzealous pets.

If anything, title track BLACK NIGHT is a highly polished affair establishing a carefully gauged balance between its two vocalists – and it does so against the melodic backdrop of an affectionate ballad that nonetheless knows how to maintain its floor momentum. In the meantime, HANSI’s prominent opening sample harks back to Lawrence’s “Teaser”, a true classic from Kompakt’s earlier back catalogue, but draws a slightly different conclusion thanks to its expertly executed strings and magical arrangement. DJ KOZE backs up the package with his remix of BLACK NIGHT, where we see the iconic producer shifting gears for a subtly bouncing downbeat gem – followed by MATT KARMIL’s finely filtered, hypnotic house revamp that once more proves this upcoming artist to be a major force in the growing field of philanthropic psychedelics.

Gesloten Cirkel has become one of techno’s true cult figures since his emergence back in 2009 with a self-titled 12″ for Viewlexx offshoot Murder Capital that explored the strange fringe between techno and electro, with only intermittent releases for David Vunk’s Moustache Techno and Berceuse Heroique and the odd remix since. The paucity of information surrounding Gesloten Cirkel’s identity beyond a given location of Moscow has lead to all manner of unfounded speculation, with the Ratsnake himself merely stating he is “just an out of shape balding dude who sits in an office” to us for his excellent Juno Plus podcast back in 2012.

The feverish reception to Gesloten Cirkel’s memorable Berceuse Heroique debut has seemingly coaxed the producer into a more proactive mindset, with remix commissions for Dekmantel and Permanent Vacation last year complemented by the announcement of a planned second BH release. Whilst High Speed Cruising is yet to surface, news has now arrived that Gesloten Cirkel will pull the Murder Capital label out of dormancy with his debut album Submit X. Due out next month, the ten-track double LP is described quite aptly as “not for the faint-hearted” with initial copies set to be pressed on coloured vinyl – interested parties can check the Clone site for some brief previews.

Up-and-coming British producers Kalli (Manchester) and Dharma (Newcastle) bisect this EP with their bigtime techno-off, adding two new breeds of muscular, bigroom sounds to your collection of club tools. FORZA is Origami Sound’s new club music concept series and this split release with two tracks from each producer marks its inception.

Soft and rough at the same time, Dharma’s ‘Nine’ and ‘Tuesday’ are both elaborate compositions with every element in place, relying on anticipation, engineered to soothe while imploding. There to take you from your comfort zone to the good kind of shock are Kalli’s ‘Deadline’ and ‘Raindance’, both striking with raw power – their elaborate, trance-inducing atmospherics and wild warehouse hooks are predestined to bring out the rave demons in anyone.

Just like in the Mahabharata, Kalli & Dharma’s coming together is pure karma, but this time they’re protagonists in a friendly versus, where the listener gets to decide their fate. Fact is, the pair is a powerhouse, so picking a favorite is no picnic.

Max McFerren has long been a staple of Brooklyn and Chinatown’s lofts and club spaces at particularly late hours with his playful but muscular take on techno, but this is the first glimpse into the unadorned but texturally luxurious MCFERRDOG project. Jacked on twisted optimism and Power 105.7 bombastics, “Club Amniotics” toes extremes of fantastical, bubbly weird-as-I-wanna-be experiments and a hugely emotive, open-spaced club vernacular.

Whether goofing off into circus EDM and kaleidoscopic, elasticated techno or hitting ultra-sincere emotions and straight up euphoria, MCFERRDOG is totally uninhibited in this pre-subjective, pre-club ego-forming sphere. Fantasizing an alt Panorama Bar culture, particularly sportive bouncers like “Thesaurus Mode” ride a clearer techno tempo, processing jumped up club signifiers into a super melodic ASMR love story. Mutated neo-rave sensations rise off of the title track (one of the c38s more sensual moments) whereas the stop-start funk of “Rosewater” or slightly drunker “Vulgar Physics” is bouncy and straight up weird.

This dual mind might go some ways to explain McFerren’s interactions with the likes of DJ Richard and Young Male at the same time as playing warehouses with acid freaks like Gobby and Physical Therapy. MCFERRDOG’s strokes are broad; tapping into the threshold of a good idea and reopening recent youth with post-ironic realness and notions of unbridled imagination, fantasy and new age.
