Theirs is a highly visual sound, even when divorced from the integral visual element – previous releases and live shows make use of video zoetrope turntables and kaleidoscopic lighting – presenting synaesthetically enhanced geometries tripping the lines between plunderphonics, radiophonics, pastoral ambience and algorithmic splatter. They take a very hands-on approach for this new album, using prepared turntables and a “phenomenological” approach to sound and improvised performance yielding the oddest results. “Petit Cochon” is a total burner, no exceptions. From the opening cryptic threat of “Powerful Magnets” into the serrated pummeling of “The Bluffer’s Corporation”, it becomes clear very quickly that no punches will be pulled and that “Petit Cochon” is a heavy affair. Donadios signature sample manipulation in tandem with live electronics and particular mixing processes hit new highs with the manic clatter of “Suck Out the Reason”, which shifts and shuffles between huge snare drums and whispers from the void. “Stains Left Unnamed”, like it’s title suggests, is a grim and filthy ordeal with head-spinning delay ringing alongside jagged and fractured rhythm. Free USA is the first full-length album by Protect-U, the Washington, DC-based duo of Aaron Leitko and Future Times Records co-founder Mike Petillo.
The record was written, recorded, and mixed throughout 2013 at Protect-U’s home studio and mastered by Matt Colton at Alchemy Mastering. The tracks on Free USA were jammed into being and then laser-cut into exact shapes. On their two Future Times EPs – Double Rainbow and World Music – Leitko and Petillo poured layers of ambient drift onto nearly-steady house foundations, creating long and propulsive zone-outs. On Free USA, Protect-U doesn’t depart from this sound as much as they launch further and further out with it, specifically in the rhythm section, which pivots and lurches into unexpected places throughout the LP. Melodically, automation and humanity combine with dizzying, psychedelic grace, making the sound design sparkle with cool precision. From the bright, super-soaked opening track “Needs” to the boxed-in drum clunk and iced-out coda of “Down the Tubes,” Free USA showcases Protect-U’s constantly mutating strand of electronic music.

Formed in 2009, Protect-U has released music on Future Times, Planet Mu, Vibrations, No Pain in Pop, and done remixes for Awesome Tapes From Africa, Meakusma, and Public Possession. In 2013, they were invited to collaborate with Maxmillion Dunbar and Peaking Lights at Red Bull Music Academy’s “Pass the Gates: NYC in Dub” event.

Cititrax presents the full length LP by Brooklyn duo Further Reductions. Shawn O’Sullivan and Katie Rose formed Further Reductions in 2008 as an outlet for their shared passion of electronic dance music. O’Sullivan, known for his recent techno releases as Vapauteen on L.I.E.S., 400PPM on Avian and Civil Duty (with Beau Wanzer of Streetwalker) on The Corner has been quite active lately blurring the lines between techno and noise music. With Further Reductions, O’Sullivan’s rhythmic sensibility is fused with Rose’s pop leanings to create super lush and atmospheric tracks that work both on and off the dance floor. Though Matt Karmil seemed to appear out of nowhere last year, his debut album, —-, has the considered approach of a producer with more than just a few releases to his name. In its press release, Karmil explains that, though he’s been making music for years, he had no intention of releasing anything until recently, when it was reportedly coaxed out of him by Kompakt artists Popnoname and Ada.

It’s not hard to see why Karmil’s work resonates with the Kompakt crew. Like many in the Cologne label’s family, the Englishman’s productions are warm, rich and heady, treading the line between Funktion One stacks and home stereos. Grounded in house, the aesthetic across —-‘s eight tracks is hazy but far from lo-fi. Aside from the occasional piano stab, tape hiss and acid squelch, most of the sounds here are unrecognisable. It’s clear that Karmil obsesses over the samples he uses, and the rewards are obvious.

The first of eight tracks is “Open,” a murky six-minute workout that sets the tone for the rest of the album. For the most part, the next 45 minutes see subdued kick drums paired with simple, unobtrusive basslines, both serving as a sturdy platform for Karmil’s collages of moody samples. Like a lot of quality deep house, the emphasis is not on snappy drums or swing, but on atmospherics. Karmil’s deft approach creates some truly immersive moments, and the highlights come when the tracks stretch out. At ten minutes long, “Frankrike (float)” is one of the album’s choice cuts—it’s not much more than a simple loop, where the same short string and keys samples repeat for its duration. In many respects, —- is an example of classic minimalism. But those weary of the tag risk missing out on the warmth of Karmil’s palette, and the unique charm that comes with it.
