“Electronic music producer Derwin Panda developed his sound in his hometown of Chelmsford, Essex, as he worked day jobs in record shops and adult bookstores while making music in his studio at night. The resulting tracks that comprised his breakout 2010 debut, Lucky Shiner, rejiggered hip-hop’s boom-tick with exotic timbres, vibrant keyboard hues and minced vocal snippets — redolent of Four Tet, if slightly more caffeinated.

In the three years between his debut and his latest album, Half of Where You Live, Gold Panda seems to have gotten out of the house and turned into a world-beater, with the album acting as a travelogue of sorts; it name-checks the small Japanese island of Enoshima in one song and the British village of Flinton in another. Stemming from time Panda spent traveling through South America, “Brazil” features a tocking woodblock alongside harps, canned handclaps and a sampled voice uttering that country’s name, the track growing in warmth and light as it whirs along. “The Most Liveable City” (which as of 2012 was Melbourne, Australia) balances field recordings of bird calls with a gorgeous synth melody and a skittering snare pattern that evokes Aphex Twin at his most hyperkinetic.

Gold Panda is most evocative in “My Father in Hong Kong 1961.” Electronically rendered exotica as viewed through the prism of Ryuichi Sakamoto, the song features stately metallophone tones that cast a glow and evoke a sense of nostalgia for a bygone place and time. It’s well worth the trip.”

‘Flowers Of Destruction’ is the official Debut Album of Felix K. Record Release Date is 04.05.2013.

Some things are created without any particular purpose, some things just happen. According to Felix K, his 15 track debut album ‘Flowers of Destruction’ is just such a thing. Maybe this also explains his decision to only use numerical titles, which emphasizes on the literal level what becomes obvious when listening to the tracks behind the numbers. This album is a coherent whole, indeed each track has a distinct vibe of its own, but when taken together they form a space of transformation where various moods, sounds and rhythms blend harmoniously into each other. The album unfolds its acoustic beauty because it simply avoids posing ever-so obvious imperatives to impress, somehow like nature slowly reclaiming the urban concrete jungles of a post-industrialist dystopia.

‘Flowers of Destruction’ can be located in a musical universe somewhere between electronica, techno, ambient and 170 bpm. Some of its tracks are driven by Felix’ unique and compelling drum sequencing with lots of sub bass and pushing percussions, whereas others take the time to dive into ambient depths and widths with their dubby drones and mesmerizing melodies. They all make use of contrast and opposing elements that create a fascinating tension, like the destructive force of an explosion in slow motion.

In terms of its physical appearance, the album’s 3×12″ grey vinyl will correspond with the different shades of grey of the full cover artwork. There will be 500 copies released in May on Hidden Hawaii LTD and distributed by Hard Wax. A couple of weeks later, the album will also be released digitally.

The Red Falcon Projects debut on WR with a digital reissue of RFP’s long lost classic “Microtonal Acid Dub”. Originally released as a limited edition cassette tape which is now completely out of print, WR has managed to secure the last copy of this cassette on earth and transfer it to digital format, thus saving humanity from the pain a suffering it would have endured from the lack of this wonderful album. Microtonal Acid Dub is composed of 10 stream-of-conciousness cosmic acid jams that were recorded live a long long time ago in a studio far far away.

Musically we find RFP exercising a tasteful restraint behind the knobs and keys, creating a very hypnotic and atmospheric listen filled with crisp electronic rhythms and vividly colorful synthesizer hooks all bathed in comforting analog warmth. Trippy cosmic listening for the ones who know…

Releaseinfo: Opening up with the gentle yet solidly throbbing First Floor, the story begins in what could easily be the early hours of the Berghain. Or perhaps it’s an industrial landscape of the not so distant future. Either way, the cinematic tone of the story begins here as the Italian duo move forward on their journey… Next stop is Places, a space filled with shuffled breakbeats and emotional synths, peppered with vocals that hint at a nostalgia for another time and place. Somewhere we’ve been before? Somewhere we might be going? Like a literary foreshadowing of things to come. And in an instant, the pace quickens. As Running Searching begins so do we shoot directly into the heart of things. Here Chasing Kurt joins the crew, his vocals coming in like a soulful rallying cry bolstered by deep bass and arepeggiated synths that urge us all ever ahead. Onward. Upward. A truly standout moment. Now energized, Subterfuge seems to move the journey downwards and upwards simultaneously. As we step into a dreamy underground place where the beat moves us forward but the space between the synths keeps us looking all around in wonder. Voices surround us, subtly hinting at a story we might now slowly begin to piece together… But before we can get our footing and our heads around what is happening the dreamscape seems to shift and The Quiet Hour begins. With help from talented Italian producer, Avatism, the journey takes a dramatic and animated turn into slow driving techno. This is a textured soundscape energized by drums that might sound inspired from the influences of the past but are clearly crafted with sounds pulled from the future. From here we arrive at Prisms, an interlude that at first seems relaxed until you realize that with just a combination of arpeggiated synths, percussive elements and noises plucked from the ether you are smack in the middle of a piece of music that somehow wraps it’s emotion around a moving image that moves you with it. Doing it all without the standard straightforward push of the 4/4 kick and yet always propelling us ahead. Moving up another level to the Second Floor, the four to the floor kick returns and we’ve stepped back into the club without ever leaving the story behind. The emotion remains but the beat reemerges with a sythesized tonal percussion that sets the stage for a modern tale of tribal warfare. The urban jungle is its landscape and the dancefloor is the domain where it reigns over all. The perfect counterpoint comes next as Clarian joins the team with his fervent announcement, This World Is Not Designed For Us. Beautiful vocals, melodies and synths are accompanied by disjointed beats that still somehow stay in lockstop with its narrative. A distress call from the youth of today looking to find their place in an ever confusing world. Oblique, which follows, answers this call like a shot fired into the night. A forceful piece of dancefloor material that works well both in a room full of a thousand or a room of only one. It showcases solid beats that rest firmly in your body while the airy high end of plucky synths and melody that arrive like the blowing of Gabriel’s trumpet across the airwaves of the heavens to land directly in the listener’s lap, creating a mood that is oblique perhaps but certainly anything but inaccessible. After the blunt energy of its predecessor, Hidden Spectator seems at first to flip the mood but then takes us slowly back up with a soundscape that builds from an ambience to a dull roar, keeping the emotional level high as we take just a slight pause from the beats before heading back into the fray… Then we’re back as False Matters launches us even higher into the techno stratosphere. The hardest hitting track of the trip, we’re at full force here with a nod to Detroit and its Underground Resistance but never losing the unique sonic footprint that Clockwork have created throughout the voyage. A solid groove that build and builds and builds and builds and never lets us down. How to follow such raw energy? With beauty it seems, as Lost Keys brings label mates Tale of Us onboard to begin to wrap up the chronicle. The beats stay strong but here become more shuffled and emotive as they are accompanied by keys that are not so much lost as pleading. Brimming with feeling as this pairing of friends and artistic peers shine through with an emotional maturity that seems only appropriate as one reaches the end of this kind of journey. A real achievement. And then, like all good stories, the end must come. But if it’s not a disappointment that’s a testament to the forlorn beauty of One Way Ticket. The best kind of send off, its haunting guitar strikes a deep emotional chord that keeps ringing in our minds long after the last of the melody has faded away. The story may be over but it still remains living somewhere deep inside of us. Just as we remain eager to hear it retold once again…

Three years ago, Baths dropped his startlingly beautiful debut, Cerulean. Released on Anticon, the record blurred the line between post-modern pop and the LA beat scene with devastating emotional clarity. Its tone was as celestial as its album title, taken from a shade of blue typically used to describe the sky.

Cerulean earned year-end “Best Of” recognition from Pitchfork and The Onion’s A.V. Club and established Chatsworth-raised Will Wiesenfeld as one of the finest young composers (and falsettos) in Los Angeles. His sophomore album, Obsidian finds him emerging as one of the most complete artists of his generation. As you might expect, the name hints at darker overtones. The mood is shimmering and pitch-black, the lovely blood flow has turned into lava.

“I’ve always been inspired by really dark material and from the beginning I knew I wanted the songs to be much darker, both musically and lyrically,” Baths says.

Following the success of his first album, Baths spent much of the next year touring to progressively larger audiences. He also released an ethereal ambient project under the Geotic name. When he returned home in July of 2011 to record his sophomore effort, he was bedridden for months because of an E. Coli bacterial infection, barely able to digest solid food and bereft of creative energy.

Obsidian understandably has these scars etched into its imprint. The first song is called “Worsening,” subsequent cuts include “Ossuary,” “No Past Lives” and “Earth Death.” While the mood is often bleak, it’s never bloated. “Miasma Sky” balances being “swallowed alive by the sky” with a gorgeous piano groove and levitative croon that could detonate a disco club night. The album is unusually cohesive, suffused with heavenly choirs, head-nodding percussion, sexually-charged lyrics, and wry humor.

“The songs and lyrics all came out of a pretty fucked and arduous process of trial and error,” Baths says. ”But I hope people understand that I’m not the depressed, suicidal, and death-obsessed person the record may paint me as being. These are just darker areas that I wanted to explore.”

The areas of exploration include reading and research into the Dark Ages and the black plague, different versions of Hell as spied through Dante’s Inferno, the Bible, and old world illuminated manuscripts and paintings. These noirish fascinations met the virtuosic chops of a 24-year old who has been playing piano for 20 years.

“Anything I found that felt like a unique vision of darker emotions or atmospheres, I tried to absorb,” Baths says. “Being a positive and outgoing guy made it that much more difficult getting into that mindset. It was a matter of tapping into that and returning with songs that felt genuine and somehow from my own personal experience.”

This is the power of Obsidian. It combines universal questions with personal pain. On just his second album, Baths exhibits what only a few artists are capable of: painting in any shade they desire.
