It’s been a while since Freerange boss Jamie Odell (better known, of course, as Jimpster) delivered an album; in fact, his last full-length dropped way back in 2006. Seven years is a long time between drinks, but the rest seems to have done Odell good; Porchlight & Rocking Chairs is arguably his strongest album to date. While deep house remains his focus (see the intricate “Glowing Embers”, Detroit influenced “Cracks In The Pavement” and Moodymann-ish “High Wire”), there’s a soulful bagginess and barely concealed jazziness throughout. More impressively, many tracks hark back to his pre-house days as a producer of lovingly crafted downtempo gems (see “Jasmine Dragon”, “Wanting You” and previous single “These Times”.

“Tranklements is such a great Sheffield word, it means a collection of objects, often precious to the owner. Everyone has a collection of Tranklements somewhere! These are ours.

Tranklements is a body of work created as 16 unique and individual tracks. Each one is its own little object, something we’ve created to externalise, explain and express the world we find ourselves in. It encompasses many thoughts, emotions and desires from the last eighteen months. There is an individual story and internal message behind each. They’ve all been discussed and fought for. However, we really don’t want to explain them, we don’t expect those personal rationals to translate to others. We’d rather you gazed upon the objects yourself and come to your own conclusions. Nobody likes to be told what to think.

In many ways our work with the eSC (www.electronicsupperclub.tv) project has helped us to reconnect with many things and each other. The creative talent and desires of the younger generation have never gone away. The real underground is still as vibrant as ever, not lost to false values, over-sized egos and ladder climbing brands. We’ve always respected that energy and individuality that exists beyond the bland compliant mainstream.

While “Hexagon Cloud” may be Erika’s debut solo release, this is by no means her introduction to the scene. For years Erika has been a member of Ectomorph and co-conspirator of Interdimensional Transmissions, but since these projects play shadowy games with identity and perception, she may just need that introduction.

Erika was raised in a household full of Science and Music. Growing up surrounded by discarded computers, she built her own machines and ran a BBS from her bedroom before she went to high school. Moving to Ann Arbor in 1993, she ran into the peripheries of Detroit’s burgeoning underground electronic party scene via her involvement as a jazz DJ and Program Director at WCBN, the University of Michigan’s student run radio station. Though she took formal piano lessons from a young age, it was her ability to tame machines that brought her invitation into Ectomorph in 1997.

Her focus in Ectomorph was live analog synthesis and fluid improvisational interactions with Ectomorph & IT founder BMG. As Ectomorph evolved beyond the boundaries of the sullied word “Electro”, Erika continued to work with BMG on his other projects, including keyboard work on the “Credit Card” single with Sal Principato. Through years of touring and throwing some of Detroit’s finest underground parties, Erika grew and took shape as vinyl DJ and analog composer of her own right.

Composing without the aid of a computer, Erika’s system is centered around a rare highly flexible hardware sequencer. The ideas flowed quickly, and what began as an EP quickly blossomed into a double album with the aid of production from BMG. Science and music, dreams of space and microscopic organisms, mutation of plant life and the birth of stars, all come together effortlessly in her work to sound like post acid techno subterranean spelunking in a quest to return to the stars. Or at least to the northern “Hexagon Cloud” of Saturn.

Catch Erika debuting the album live at this years’ Movement festival, or perhaps in your home town.

Speedy J and Lucy have revealed details of their new collaborative project, Zeitgeber, with a self-titled album due for release in June.

The project links together two well-known purveyors of experimentally-tinged techno. Speedy J, real name Jochem Paap, is a veteran producer whose celebrated career stretches back more than two decades. Lucy, AKA Luca Mortellaro, has gained relatively more recent renown as the mind behind Stroboscopic Artefacts, which is where Zeitgeber will come out.

According to a press release, Zeitgeber—the term translates loosely from German to “synchronizer”—has been in the works for 18 months, and it sees the duo “freed of dancefloor considerations” and focused on more abstract sound design. While Stroboscopic Artefacts has already issued full-length albums from Lucy himself as well as Xhin and Dadub, this one will be the first available on 2xLP vinyl (instead of CD), along with the usual digital formats. Like the rest of the label’s output, Dadub will handle mastering duties.

Dapayk solo is a studio workaholic and he strikes a blow for vinyl. In 2009 he started his very own vinyl only series called DPK, next to his well established labels Mo’s Ferry, fenou and RRYGULAR. The idea was to present vinyl in striking colours as a special format for his liveset tracks and beloved edits by artists such as Format:B, Super Flu, Sascha Braemer and Jon Hester. It’s a feast for the eyes and the ears all in one. Now, four years later and after reaching #10 of the series, Dapayk decided to compile all tracks in a collectors box. In a review of the past ten releases he also felt it was time to make all tracks available for digital djs – in a legal way. This big bundle contains 21 tracks and ranges from minimalistic to funfair tunes and also some edgy b-sides.

‘Timelines’ is the new LP from British house producer and DJ Luke Solomon. Alongside Luke’s original productions the album features a selection of handpicked remixes and the album presented as a continuous mix. Luke Solomon’s influence on house music has been strongly felt for many years. As a DJ and promoter he pioneered mid-week London clubbing with his legendary Space night alongside the late, great Kenny Hawkes. As a producer he has constantly delivered original, often idiosyncratic and always unique house music (and beyond) for an enviable list of imprints. As an A&R he has helped develop many a career (Tiefschwarz, Freeform Five and Isolee to name but a few) with Classic Music Company, and continues to do so with Classic and his new role as one of Defected’s A&R team. Speaking about making ‘Timelines’ Luke had this to say. “It is an album that I have been making and remaking over the last six years. I started work on it off of the back of The Difference Engine (Rekids), my last album under my own name. The idea was to make the album part of a trilogy, this one being representative of my more Balearic roots. The original version that was completed fell on deaf ears quite considerably and it became a bit of a sticking point for me. I decided to put it to one side and in the process started working on some other music, which in turn, helped me stumble across new sounds and production techniques. The initial idea was to work on a series of songs that represented significant points in my life, both lyrically and musically. It then became more relevant to the six years of writing and producing the album. A lot of shit happened, and I was able to pour it into finally completing the album. I then decided to keep the album guarded and close as it had become that personal. I didn’t want the album to be effected by opinions of those that were too close to me and the music. What I ended up with is something that has come straight from the heart, made possible by joining forces with a whole stack of talented musicians and singers over the last six years.” ‘Timelines’ is, as even the incredibly humble and self-effacing Solomon would agree, his best work to date, featuring contributions from Jon Marsh, Natalie Broomes, Terry Grant and Tiger Tiger. It’s also an album which is heavily song and musician focused, setting its stall out as a real listening experience from the off.
