Little Piece of Perseverance” is an album made in winter/spring 2011-2012, made completely out of field recordings that Optical Frameworks collected during this period. Each track represents a set of places visited mostly at night. You can hear tracks made of sounds of snowy, nighty trainstations, people waiting and chatting about daily problems, melting snow, wind and other sounds describing moods of this slow period of awaking in my life.

One of his new trilogy Helsinki Beat Tape is an assortment of raw Hip Hop inspired beats with dusty samples, unrefined drums, and an air of uncertainty as to where his beat tape trilogy is going to take us. What we get on Part One is reminiscent of Hip Hop icons Premo and Dilla; a reformation of sorts that brings us back into time. DFALT successfully explores the musical possibilities within his choice of dusty samples and melodic synth work, while adding a bit of funk to the concoction with grainy drums ultimately bringing the samples back to life. One must only take a look at ‘San Francisco’ to get a real taste of DFALT. It’s going back to the basics; minimalism and simplicity bring everything within this track back to life in a more invigorating way. Imagine the beatuiful San Francisco skyline as wonderful piano chords guide your ears across a laid back and airy synth. Part One spans over 10 instrumentals that each carry with them a solid weight. ‘The Beggars’ starts off the project with an ethereal vibe, causing you to delve deeper into the project. You automatically desire more as the warm textures of the analog instruments stops any belief of this project being comprised of normal Hip Hop instrumentals. Delicately sliced vocal chops adds to its graceful energy. Soon, we’re thrown into ‘Feather Ton’, a funky overriden beat that speaks to the allure of broken rhythms while bluesy and soulful chopped vocals keep us itchin for more. Then, as if on cue, we’re hit with the abrasive SPCTRPN: a beautifully crafted model of synth work on top of chalky and hard hitting drums. Space is important in music, and DFALT knows this better than anyone. SPCTRPN is a perfect example of how just a little bit less can mean a whole lot more in terms of bringing out a piece of art’s energy and vitality. The rest of the project complete with uplifting vocal work courtesy of CWL shows exactly why Jason Drake is one of the most talented musicians out there today. The man is constantly defining new boundaries in sound and pushing them to the limits.

Forest Swords will release an album called Engravings through Tri Angle on August 26th.

The Merseyside-based artist Matthew Barnes first emerged with the breakthrough Dagger Paths 12-inch in 2010, which was released through both Olde English Spelling Bee and No Pain In Pop. Rather than build on the excitement that surrounded that record, Barnes was forced to take a break from production due to hearing problems. Initially he maintained a low profile, focusing on his work as a designer and artist, along with a couple of musical endeavours, including production work for How To Dress Well and Haleek Maul.

Barnes then spent a year crafting his first full-length, which will arrive next month. According to a press release, the producer “mixed the entire record outdoors in the Wirral countryside on his laptop.” It features his own spliced vocals as well as a contribution from Anneka, and looks set to further refine and evolve his signature decayed sound. To get some insight into the sound of the record, you can stream “The Weight Of Gold” over at the Forest Swords SoundCloud page. Barnes will play several live dates in support of the LP, including dates at Unsound in Krakow and London.

German ambient-connaisseur and soundpoet Marsen Jules (aka Martin Juhls) is well known for his releases on City Center Offices, Kompakt or his own label Oktaf Records. On stage he often combines his atmospheric soundscapes with live musicians. A steady formation is the Marsen Jules Trio, which features the twin brothers Anwar Alam and Jan-Philipp Alam on piano and violins accompanied by Jules´ restrained live-sampling, bowed percussions and singing wine glasses.

For tours and festivals the Trio already played in the US as well as in Canada and all over Europe. With their debut-album „Présence Acousmatique“ on Oktaf Records the musicians bring their „acoustic presence“ to CD for the first time. It features six highly atmospheric soundsculptures between ambient, avantgarde-classic and modern jazz. Whereas the opening „OEillet Parfait / OEillet Sauvage“ is still a variation of a track from Jules´ „Les Fleurs“ album, all other tracks are composed for the Trio or developed out of the cooperation itself. Two tracks also feature saxophone player Roger Döring (Dictaphone) as a guest musician. The combination of dark scapes and saxophone on „Histoire de la nuit“ and „Éclipse“ makes one think of an ambient version of Bohren und der Club Ghore. The abstract „Excalibur“ and „Maison en Vitre“ remind of early avantgarde-classic and twelve-tone music and the closing „Les trains stortent de la gare“ brings a bittersweet composition for piano and violin hold together by sparkling percussions.

“Being is the sum of appearing” is the debut album from the Euro-electronica trio diamat. Founded by Attilio Bruzzone (co-founder and composer of port-royal) and Andrea Zangrandi in the Fall of 2011 during port-royal’s Russian tour. The duo later added long time friend Christos Garmpidakis (dergar). As one might suspect the album features Bruzzone’s brand of lush melancholic electronic music with Garmpidakis and Zangrandi providing some extra (and all important) texture to the songs which give the track a certain shimmer that represents the harmonic fusion of these three individuals. At times the proceedings can get quite cavernous yet shimmering at the same time, atmospherically structured and chaotically fused, while remaining firmly in the four-on-the-floor ambient-techno realm when things do get moving can induce some much liberated hip shaking. Add in an abundance of delayed guitars and synths of all sorts, plenty of layers of sound to drown in, powerful yet polished electronic beats and some undeniably sophisticated structures you’ll be able to envision the essence of this record. A great debut from a trio to watch. “Being is the sum of appearing” is out on July 30th on n5MD.
