Freeing themselves from one specific sound and the shackles of creating electronic music with a laptop, the boys take influence from each other’s varying musical strengths and their unifying starting point (Hackney). Around them in Hackney the band have found a well of untapped talent. This extended family or wider orbiting collective also includes a wealth of musicians from vocalists to brass players, percussionists and string players. The result on stage sounds, and feels, like a genuine carnival: brimming with spontaneous energy and infectious to all.
As the band say “What unites us all really is our love of soulfulness on the dance floor. We want people to dance and to feel something”. This band of writers, musicians and DJs are an example of possessing that rare thing: a collective of innovators seamlessly coming together and striking gold.

The Mount Fuji Doomjazz Corporation is the heavy droning improv incarnation of The Kilimanjaro Darkjazz Ensemble. Stygian Stride is Jimy SeiTang, a New York based musician in the NNCK axis who, as a member of Psychic Ills and most currently with Rhyton, was brought up in the midst of the groundswell of avant-garde and improvised psychedelic music in New York City over the past decade. On this, his debut solo release, SeiTang has moved away from rock music completely, instead turning his attention to gauzy electronic music reminiscent of Gas and the classic era of Mille Plateaux and Chain Reaction, with nods to Manuel Göttsching and Tangerine Dream.

What made SeiTang such an integral part of the improv based bands he’s worked with, his ability to listen and communicate, reacting in time to his bandmates’ aesthetic and musical choices, is the same thing that makes Stygian Stride a successful endeavor. When writing and recording the album, he was reacting similarly to the different facets the machines’ unique temperaments, learning the particular personalities of each piece of equipment and facilitating the creation of something greater than the sum of its parts.

While melodic and rhythmic repetitiveness are the backbone of Stygian Stride’s music, each piece subtly evolves at its own pace and in its own way. “Hindsight” is pushed forward by a steady, muted kick, and washes of synth that coalesce into a ghostly melody. “Drift” features multi-layered rhythmic textures that shift in and out of phase, anchored by a a heavy drone, and “Taiga” features a similarly phased synthesizer arpeggio. The album is bookended by two beatless tracks. While “Celestial Stems” opens the album with gentle, hypnotic sequencer patterns, closer “Fade Into Bolivian” is one long, slow-moving foreboding organ melody over a deep, anxious drone.

Rather than composing and recording on a laptop, SeiTang sought out and collected vintage, analog equipment and conceived the album without MIDI synching. It was recorded by Jason Meagher at Black Dirt Studios (D. Charles Speer, Jack Rose, Expo ’70, Blues Control), and mastered by CGB ay Dubplates & Mastering in Berlin. Stygian Stride shows a side of SeiTang’s artistry coming to light that has up to this point laid dormant, just under the surface. This album is the beginning of an exploration of the intersection of the mind- expanding and the mechanized.

Crafted from a shared interest of the odd folk nature of Britain and the resultant dark strangeness, Throwing Snow and Augustus Ghost pool their individual inspirations, ideas and styles on ‘A Small Murmuration’, the first full-length album under their collaborative Snow Ghosts moniker.

Throwing Snow, aka Ross Tones, first started working with Augustus Ghost, aka Hannah Cartwright, after she first arrived in England five years ago. Hannah comes from a songwriting background, having previously collaborated with Phaeleh as well as singing in the band Masakichi, while Ross possesses more electronic influences – his work as Throwing Snow has gained plaudits from all sides, manifested most recently through invitations to support Bonobo on his forthcoming tour, as well as Thom Yorke’s Atoms For Peace project. Together, the pair shared a mutual influence of the shadowy elements of folk and metal, and it is through these reference points that Snow Ghosts began to take shape.

They first found an outlet for their music through Black Acre Records in 2011 on the ‘Lost At Sea’ EP, and the pair have spent the subsequent two years compiling their debut album through short bursts of writing. In that time everything was done together, from field recording (everything from desperately hanging a mic out the window to record a thunder storm on ‘And The World Was Gone’, to recording leaves rustling in Tower Hamlets graveyard, to an ancient zither and bowed fretless acoustic bass), to reading the same literature – Mark Z Danielewski’s ‘House of Leaves’ left a particularly strong impression on their shared head-space.

The music itself is brooding and at times imposing, yet sweepingly majestic throughout – Augustus Ghost’s rich vocals balance perfectly on Throwing Snow’s sombre sonic creations, as hints of industry and mechanism are married with the organic, natural world. The album’s title – ‘A Small Murmuration’ – combines Ross’ love of chaos theory and Hannah’s earthy propensity for nature. The theme is reflected in the imagery surrounding the album – the artwork and photographs come from Hannah’s grandfather in the 1930s, and form a special attachment to each of the tracks. Additional illustration was done by Matthew Ellwood, one of Ross’ oldest and closest friends, who also provided the art for the Black Acre EP. The album as a whole feels little need or desire to fit alongside any current trends, instead focusing on a fundamental formula: of close collaboration, shared interests, and strong friendship.
